Essays on the Implications of Accounting and Audit Regulations
2021
Papers I-III are excluded from the dissertation until they will be published. In this dissertation, some questions relating to the implications of these developments, particularly regarding audit pricing, accounting quality, and auditors’ use of experts are examined. In the first essay, a bibliometric review of the literature is conducted to synthesize the academic research with a focus on insights about the impact of these regulatory and technological changes on audit fees. Given that audit fees is a function of audit effort, stakeholders including regulators, practitioners, and investors have been interested in understanding the impact of accounting and audit regulations on audit fees. Aligning University Roles and Strategic Orientations: When Local Mandates and Global Aspirations Meet
2022
Recent policy developments in Norwegian higher education, aiming to nurture world-class environments, have focused on the need to strengthen teaching quality and research excellence. However, higher education institutions (HEIs) are increasingly under pressure to make local contributions (“impacts”), for example, in the form of job creation, technology transfers, local economic developments, and so on, which result in tensions and dilemmas at multiple levels, not least as regards strategic management. This chapter investigates how universities align education and research on the one hand and how they navigate the tensions between local demands and global aspirations on the other. Firstly, w…
Family and non-family business in Iran: Coupling among innovation, exporting, and growth-expectation
2021
Gallo and Sveen, in 1991, specified problems of whether family businesses can take advantage of factors facilitating internationalization. We compare family and non-family businesses in innovation, export, and growth-expectation, and consider how outcomes are aligned, with a coupling that may be loose, with a synergy that benefits the business. This raises a further issue, is governance of a business affecting not only each of the outcomes but also their coupling. A representative sample of 530 Iranian businesses was surveyed in 2018 for Global Entrepreneurship Monitor. Innovation, export, and growth-expectation are found to be lower in family businesses. Coupling between innovation and exp…

Data-driven & Theory-driven Science : Artificial Realities and Applications to Savings Groups
2021
Paper I and Paper II is not published yet. They are excluded from the dissertation until they will be published. The scientific process is neither unique nor nomic. Two processes of scientific inquiry are theory-driven and data-driven science. This dissertation analyzes savings groups using theory-driven and data-driven methods. Simulated realities-based on data-driven theory-are used to understand the emerging dynamics of savings groups. Savings groups are grassroots, community-based organizations composed of 15 to 30 members. These organizations-usually supported by international development agencies-have weekly meetings during a cycle of operations that typically lasts a year. In the gro…
Effects of home-based reablement : A micro-econometric approach
2020
The common theme of this thesis is estimating e ects of home-based reablement (HBR) by applying micro-econometrics. Estimating cost related e ects of HBR proved challenging, mainly due to speci cs of the Norwegian public health setting and the individual tailoring of the HBR treatment. However, important results for the Norwegian public sector have been generated through an immense data job and by applying state-of-the-art econometric techniques. This thesis adds to the growing literature assessing empirical e ects of new health interventions.

Early bird or early worm? First-mover (dis)advantages and the success of web-based social enterprises
2022
Achieving the optimal market entry time is of immense strategic importance for entrepreneurs, especially in online markets, where web-based social entrepreneurial activity continues to grow. This raises the question of whether first-mover market entry actually pays off or if market entry as a (later) follower might be the better option. First-mover research has so far not adequately answered this question. Our work contributes to closing this gap by transferring first-mover theory to web-based social enterprises. We expand upon first-mover theory by reflecting on the winner-take-all hypothesis to better illuminate the mechanisms of market structure development and entry decisions. Our empir…
Responsible I(m)ovation in Asia Pacific regions
2022
AbstractOver the past 20 years, a debate has developed on the differences between innovation and imitation strategies as mechanisms by which businesses operating in the Asia Pacific region may gain a competitive advantage. The current research contributes to this debate from a different perspective by exploring some of the challenges and opportunities associated with the combination of both strategies into what has been defined as imovation. Imovators and imovations do not stand alone in business ecosystems. Rather, they should be embraced in the context of sustainability-related virtues and emerging capabilities, such as ethical behaviour, co-responsibility and positive social impact. Taki…
