Klimaomstilling: et møte mellom diskurs og planlegging
2018

Li…

Master's thesis in Global Development and Planning (UT505) This master's thesis will shed light on why conflict arises in the development of wind power in Norway, and how ideals for renewable energy meet local opposition. In our time as research assistants at WINDPLAN, the assignment was to review key documents to categorize various conflict areas that arise in the development of respective wind power plants. It became clear that definitions of the project, perspectives on the understanding of the conflict and procedural challenges were central to the conflict picture. The purpose of the master's thesis is to see the conflict from new perspectives, where the definition “the relative megapro…

When the schools shut down : COVID-19 pandemic and inequality of opportunity among school-leavers
2021
Master's thesis in Global Development and Planning (UT505) It could be reasonably argued by now (as of June 2021) that the global COVID-19 pandemic has significantly affected almost every aspect of everyday life: from cancelled events and changes in working habits to social distancing and closed borders not only between, but sometimes also within the countries. Among others, educational systems around the world have also been exposed to significant challenges during the pandemic with the closure of educational institutions unprecedentedly disrupting the learning process of almost 1.6 billion students around the world and hitting the vulnerable the hardest. Challenges of Authenticating Migrants’ Academic Credentials as Part of Integrating in Norway : A Case study of Eritreans in Agder
2020
Master's thesis in Global Development and Planning (UT505) Due to the complex interplay among various push/pull factors that impact livelihoods and comfort zones in the Global South, an unprecedented number of persons are following unfamiliar emigration routes, heading from South to North. Political unrest, war situations, economic crisis, environmental degradations, high unemployment rates and grinding poverty, human rights violation, and the like are amongst the major factors that potentially lead to involuntary emigration. For two reasons, in particular, persons with better education and employable skills have a higher propensity to emigrate. In the first place, structural problems paren…

This study attempted to explore and describe the challenges unaccompanied young refugee students faced as they navigated their everyday schooling in a southern Norwegian municipality. By applying a mix of purposive and snowball sampling methods, 15 unaccompanied young refugee school students, three schoolteac…
Culture and risk : the role of culture and indigenous knowledge in the interpretation and adaptation to disasters : a case study of landslides in Bud…
2017
Master's thesis Global development and planning UT505 - University of Agder 2017 This study explores the role culture and indigenous knowledge play in people’s ‘interpretation’ and ‘adaption’ to landslides in Uganda. This study is important because globally, natural hazards are becoming more dangerous and destructive than ever before, causing an increasing number of disasters that interfere with a community’s livelihood and set back development efforts. Decades of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) strategies notwithstanding, many people are still vulnerable to disasters. It can be argued however, that people are still vulnerable because aspects of their culture and indigenous knowledge have bee…
