Power allocation in multi-channel cognitive radio networks with channel assembling

2011

Accepted version of a paper in the book: 2011 IEEE 12th International Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (SPAWC). Published version available from the IEEE:http://dx.doi.org/10.1109/SPAWC.2011.5990485 Consider power allocation for Secondary User (SU) packet transmissions over multiple channels with variable Primary User (PU) arrival rates in cognitive radio networks. Two problems are studied in this paper: The first one is to minimize the collision probability with PUs and the second one is to maximize the data rate while keeping the collision probability bounded. It is shown that the optimal solution for the first problem is to allocate all power onto the bes…

A Stochastic Search on the Line-Based Solution to Discretized Estimation

2012

Published version of a chapter in the book: Advanced Research in Applied Artificial Intelligence. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-31087-4_77 Recently, Oommen and Rueda [11] presented a strategy by which the parameters of a binomial/multinomial distribution can be estimated when the underlying distribution is nonstationary. The method has been referred to as the Stochastic Learning Weak Estimator (SLWE), and is based on the principles of continuous stochastic Learning Automata (LA). In this paper, we consider a new family of stochastic discretized weak estimators pertinent to tracking time-varying binomial distributions. As opposed to the SLWE, our p…

Robust control for autonomous spacecraft evacuation with model uncertainty and upper bound of performance with constraints

2014

Published version of an article in the journal: Mathematical Problems in Engineering. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2014/589381 This paper studies the problem of guaranteed cost control for spacecraft evacuation. The relative dynamic model is established based on Clohessy-Wiltshire (C-W) equations. The paper has taken parameter uncertainty, output tracking, disturbance attenuation, and fuel cost into consideration. The paper introduces a new Lyapunov approach, so the controller design problem can be transferred into a convex optimization problem subject to linear matrix inequality (LMI) constraints. By using the controller, the spacecraft evacuation can be …

Conflict resolution in the multi-stakeholder stepped spillway design under uncertainty by machine learning techniques

2021

Abstract The optimal spillway design is of great significance since these structures can reduce erosion downstream of the dams. This study proposes a risk-based optimization framework for a stepped spillway to achieve an economical design scenario with the minimum loss in hydraulic performance. Accordingly, the stepped spillway was simulated in the FLOW-3D® model, and the validated model was repeatedly performed for various geometric states. The results were used to form a Multilayer Perceptron artificial neural network (MLP-ANN) surrogate model. Then, a risk-based optimization model was formed by coupling the MLP-ANN and NSGA-II. The concept of conditional value at risk (CVaR) was utilized…

A Novel Artificial Neural Network (ANN) Using The Mayfly Algorithm for Classification

2021

Training of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) have been improved over the years using meta heuristic algorithms that introduce randomness into the training method but they might be prone to falling into a local minima in a high-dimensional space and have low convergence rate with the iterative process. To cater for the inefficiencies of training such an ANN, a novel neural network is presented in this paper using the bio-inspired algorithm of the movement and mating of the mayflies. The proposed Mayfly algorithm is explored as a means to update weights and biases of the neural network. As compared to previous meta heuristic algorithms, the proposed approach finds the global minima cost at f…

Parameter optimization for amplify-and-forward relaying with imperfect channel estimation

2009

Cooperative diversity is a promising technology for future wireless networks. In this paper, we consider a cooperative communication system operating in an amplify-and-forward (AF) mode with an imperfectly-known relay fading channel. It is assumed that a pilot symbol assisted modulation (PSAM) scheme with linear minimum mean square estimator (LMMSE) is used for the channel estimation. A simple and easy-to-evaluate asymptotical upper bound (AUB) of the symbol-error-rate (SER) is derived for uncoded AF cooperative systems with quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) constellations. Based on the AUB, we propose a criterion for the choice of parameters in the PSAM scheme, i.e., the pilot spacing …

How to enhance digital support for cross-organisational health care teams? A user-based explorative study

2020

Health care service provision of individualised treatment to an ageing population prone to chronic conditions and multimorbidities is threatened. There is a need for digitally supported care, that is, (1) person-centred, (2) integrated, and (3) proactive. The research project 3P, Patients and Professionals in Productive Teams, aimed to validate and verify the prerequisites for health care systems run with patient-centred service models. This paper presents an explorative study of the digital support of a cross-organisational health care team in Norway, providing services to elderly frail people with multimorbidities in hospital discharge transition. Qualitative research methods were employe…

Two Teletraffic-based Schemes for Energy Saving in Cellular Networks with Micro-cells

2012

Published version of an article in the journal: Journal of Communications. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.4304/jcm.7.10.726-739 Open access The energy consumption of Base Stations (BSs) is known to constitute a major part of the power consumption in a cellular network. In this paper, we propose a novel approach which may switch a BS off under light traffic conditions in order to conserve the power consumption of such networks. More specifically, when the traffic load in the middle cell of a network with three micro-cells is sufficiently low, the corresponding BS can be switched off and its users will be covered by increasing the transmission power of one sector a…

Improving the Performance Metric of Wireless Sensor Networks with Clustering Markov Chain Model and Multilevel Fusion

2013

Published version of an article in the journal: Mathematical Problems in Engineering. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2013/783543 Open access The paper proposes a performance metric evaluation for a distributed detection wireless sensor network with respect to IEEE 802.15.4 standard. A distributed detection scheme is considered with presence of the fusion node and organized sensors into the clustering and non-clustering networks. Sensors are distributed in clusters uniformly and nonuniformly and network has multilevel fusion centers. Fusion centers act as heads of clusters for decision making based on majority-like received signal strength (RSS) with comparis…
