The role of expert evaluation for microsleep detection
2015
Abstract Recently, it has been shown by overnight driving simulation studies that microsleep density is the only known sleepiness indicator which rapidly increases within a few seconds immediately before sleepiness related crashes. This indicator is based solely on EEG and EOG and subsequent adaptive pattern recognition. Accurate microsleep recognition is very important for the performance of this sleepiness indicator. The question is whether expensive evaluations of microsleep events by a) experts are necessary or b) non-experts provide sufficient evaluations. Based on 11,114 microsleep events in case a) and 12,787 in case b) recognition accuracies were investigated utilizing (i) artificia…
<title>Multifeature image and video content-based storage and retrieval</title>
1996
In this paper we present most recent evolution of JACOB, a system we developed for image and video content-based storage and retrieval. The system is based on two separate archives: a 'features DB' and a 'raw-data DB'. When a user puts a query, a search is done in the 'features DB'; the selected items are taken form the 'raw-data DB' and shown to the user. Two kinds of sessions are allowed: 'database population' and 'database querying'. During a 'database population' session the user inserts new data into the archive. The input data can consist of digital images or videos. Videos are split into shots and for each shot one or more representative frames are automatically extracted. Shots and …
Theoretical study of Fe doping and oxidation–reduction influence on the photorefractive effect in BaTiO_3
1993
We numerically solve charge-transport and Poisson equations for photorefractive BaTiO3 single crystals with a band model, using four impurity levels, Fe2+–Fe3+, Fe3+–Fe4+, VO••–VO•, and VO•-VOx. Densities and photoinduced spatial distributions of each population are computed as a function of annealing O partial pressure. Space-charge field and beam-coupling gain are also computed as a function of annealing O partial pressure, temperature, Fe concentration, grating wave vector, and light intensity. We discuss the intervening mechanism of impurity centers and the correlations between experimental conditions of crystal growth, oxidation–reduction treatments, and measurement parameters.
Invasive Alien Species and Their Effects on Marine Animal Forests
2020
Nonindigenous species are increasingly transported around the world through multiple pathways by a diversity of vectors. Invasive species are a subset of those that are introduced into the receptor community, where they establish and increase their population to a size where they impact the native system. Marine invasive species can therefore interact with and modify native animal forests and/or create novel ones resulting in simple-to-complex changes in material cycling, energy flow, ecosystem structure, and function. Despite the ever increasing number of studies dealing with marine invasive species, mostly biological invasions are mentioned generically as one of a number of threats of dir…
A Method Based on Multi-source Feature Detection for Counting People in Crowded Areas
2019
We propose a crowd counting method for multisource feature fusion. Image features are extracted from multiple sources, and the population is estimated by image feature extraction and texture feature analysis, along with for crowd image edge detection. We count people in high-density still images. For instance, in the city’s squares, sports fields, subway stations, etc. Our approach uses a still image taken by a camera on a drone to appraise the count in the population density image, using a kind of sources of information: HOG, LBP, CANNY. We furnish separate estimates of counts and other statistical measurements through several types of sources. Support vector machine SVM, classification an…
Population structure and incidence of the stolbur phytoplasma vectorHyalesthes obsoletus(Cixiidae) among geographic regions in Switzerland
2013
The dissemination of stolbur phytoplasma (16Sr-XIIA group)-induced yellows diseases depends on the dispersal biology and host plant fidelity of the planthopper vector Hyalesthes obsoletus (Hemiptera: Cixiidae). We analysed the degree of these two properties in H. obsoletus by studying its population genetic structure and stolbur infection rates relative to the two major host plants, Convolvolus arvensis and Urtica dioica, in order to infer relevant divisions for stolbur epidemiology in Swiss viticultural regions. Three regional populations with the potential to determine stolbur epidemiology in distinct ways were identified. First, populations associated with U. dioica in northern Switzerla…
Origin of a sudden mass occurrence of the stolbur phytoplasma vectorHyalesthes obsoletus(Cixiidae) in Austria
2014
The grapevine disease ‘bois noir’ is widespread in European viticulture, but in many regions there is a lack of correspondence between disease spread and abundance of the main insect vector, the planthopper Hyalesthes obsoletus. This was the situation in Austria until 2012, when a mass occurrence of the vector was observed on Urtica dioica, a new host plant for the vector and reservoir plant for the pathogen, stolbur phytoplasma, in this area. Here we analyse the origin of the Austrian vector populations using genetic markers. The origin was unambiguously assigned to two regional populations, and two causes for the population expansion: immigration of East Central European populations and l…
Improved calculations of beta decay backgrounds to new physics in liquid xenon detectors
2020
We present high-precision theoretical predictions for the electron energy spectra for the ground-state to ground-state $\beta$ decays of $^{214}$Pb, $^{212}$Pb, and $^{85}$Kr most relevant to the background of liquid xenon dark matter detectors. The effects of nuclear structure on the spectral shapes are taken into account using large-scale shell model calculations. Final spectra also include atomic screening and exchange effects. The impact of nuclear structure effects on the $^{214}$Pb and $^{212}$Pb spectra below $\approx100$ keV, pertinent for several searches for new physics, are found to be comparatively larger than those from the atomic effects alone. We find that the full calculatio…
Engineered Ferritin with Eu3+ as a Bright Nanovector: A Photoluminescence Study
2022
Ferritin nanoparticles play many important roles in theranostic and bioengineering applications and have been successfully used as nanovectors for the targeted delivery of drugs due to their ability to specifically bind the transferrin receptor (TfR1, or CD71). They can be either genetically or chemically modified for encapsulating therapeutics or probes in their inner cavity. Here, we analyzed a new engineered ferritin nanoparticle, made of the H chain mouse ferritin (HFt) fused with a specific lanthanide binding tag (LBT). The HFt-LBT has one high affinity lanthanide binding site per each of the 24 subunits and a tryptophane residue within the tag that acts as an antenna able to transfer …
