Impact of Rocky Desertification Control on Soil Bacterial Community in Karst Graben Basin, Southwestern China

2021

Microorganisms play critical roles in belowground ecosystems, and karst rocky desertification (KRD) control affects edaphic properties and vegetation coverage. However, the relationship between KRD control and soil bacterial communities remains unclear. 16S rRNA gene next-generation sequencing was used to investigate soil bacterial community structure, composition, diversity, and co-occurrence network from five ecological types in KRD control area. Moreover, soil physical-chemical properties and soil stoichiometry characteristics of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus were analyzed. Soil N and P co-limitation decreased in the contribution of the promotion of KRD control on edaphic properties. T…

Bacterial and Archaeal Communities Change With Intensity of Vegetation Coverage in Arenized Soils From the Pampa Biome

2019

Arenization occurs in regions that present sandy soils with normal rainfall levels. Predatory use of environmental sources, the dissolution of arenitic rocks and reworking of non-consolidated surface sands intensify this degradation scenario. Thus, this work aimed to evaluate the impact of the arenization process in the Brazilian Pampa Biome and how this phenomenon affects the soil microbial and plant communities. For this purpose, three arenized areas in Southern Brazil (Pampa Biome) were selected and, in each one, three sampling points were studied: arenized (ARA), arenized to grassland transition (AGT), and grassland (GRA) areas. In the three sampling points, soils presented low levels o…

Pseudosteppes and related grassland vegetation in the Pamir-Alai and western Tian Shan Mts – the borderland of the Irano-Turanian and Euro-Siberian r…

2020

The aim of our study was to complete the syntaxonomical scheme for grassland vegetation of the lowland, montane and alpine zones in the Pamir-Alai and western Tian Shan Mts in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan with some remarks on its environmental predictors. A total of 198 relevés were sampled in 2013–2018 using the seven-degree cover-abundance scale of the Braun-Blanquet approach. They were classified with k-means algorithm with tranforming cover values to three level scale of the following intervals 0%, 5% and 25% and total inertia as a measure of cluster heterogeneity. Diagnostic species were identified using the phi coefficient as a fidelity measure. Non-metric Multidimensional Scaling (NMDS)…

Vegetation of rock crevices of the montane and colline zones in the Pamir-Alai and Tian Shan Mts in Tajikistan (Middle Asia)

2014

The paper presents the results of phytosociological research conducted on the vegetation of rock habitats in the montane and colline zones of the Pamir-Alai Mountains (Tajikistan). During field surveys done in 2010–2013, 122 phytosociological releves were sampled. Plant species were recorded according to the Braun-Blanquet cover-abundance scale. The vegetation studies were carried out generally in the western Pamir-Alai and south-western Tian Shan Mts, especially in the Zeravshan, Hissar, Hazratishoh, Darvaz, Rushan, Turkestan, Kuramin and Vanch ranges. A synopsis of the rock communities of the montane and colline zones in Tajikistan is proposed. The collected material presents most of the …

Forecasting the vegetation photosynthetic activity over the Sahel: a Model Output Statistics approach

2009

The predictability of the mean August–September photosynthetic activity of vegetation over the Sahel for the period 1982–2002 is explored through a Model Output Statistics approach using ECHAM4.5 retrospective forecasts. Given the poor ability of Atmospheric General Circulation Models (AGCMs) to correctly simulate rainfall over the Sahel, the stress is put on using atmospheric dynamics alone. The mean July–September predicted fields of zonal wind at 600 hPa, and humidity flux at 850 hPa, are selected because of their key role in the West African Monsoon system and their consistency in AGCMs. Coupled modes of NDVI/atmospheric dynamics are extracted using Canonical Correlation Analyses perfor…

Turbulence structure and implications in exchange processes in high-amplitude vegetated meanders: Experimental investigation

2018

Aquatic plants in rivers interact with flow and exert an important role in maintaining suitable habitat and ecological equilibrium. Understanding turbulence structure in the presence of vegetation is important with respect to environmental processes, such as sediment transport and mixing of transported quantities. Literature indicates that mass and momentum exchanges in the presence of vegetation are strongly influenced by the sequence of coherent structures which form between vegetated and non-vegetated zones. In the present paper we investigate turbulence structure and coherent motion in high-curvature channels with submerged vegetation. The analysis is performed with the aid of detailed …

A satellite stand-alone procedure for deriving net radiation by using SEVIRI and MODIS products

2018

Abstract In this study, a new stand-alone satellite approach for the estimation of net surface radiation (Rn) has been implemented and validated for the Italian territory. The method uses the MODIS and MSG-SEVIRI time series products and it is independent of the use of ancillary data (i.e. ground measurements). A database of daily measurements of Rn, provided by 9 stations of the FLUXNET network, was used to validate the method in different ecological scenarios in the period 2010-12. The Rn modelled by the proposed approach and the corresponding FLUXNET measurements were in good agreement, with RMSE and R2 of 19.8 Wm−2 and 0.87, respectively, at 8-days scale, and 23.3 Wm−2 and 0.92, respect…

TURF-BOX: an active lighting multispectral imaging system with led VIS-NIR sources for monitoring of vegetated surfaces

2021

A microcontroller driven system suitable to monitor soil and low vegetation is described. A radiometrically pre-calibrated imaging camera driven by a microcontroller is contained in a light-tight box aiming at an actively illuminated target surface area of 50×38 cm, using LED sources with different emission wavelengths (blue, green, red and infrared). The adopted arrangement allows measurements independent from local lighting conditions and from the in situ, per-session calibrations necessary with the conventional instrumentation adopted for field measurements. Sequential lighting of the target surface with the monochromatic LED sources allows capturing multispectral images at a relatively …

Comparison of differences in resolution and sources of controlling factors for gully erosion susceptibility mapping

2018

Abstract Gully erosion has been identified as an important soil degradation process and sediment source, especially in arid and semiarid areas. Thus, it is useful to identify the spatial occurrence of this form of water erosion in the landscape and the most vulnerable areas. In this study, we explored the effects of different pixel sizes on some controlling factors extracted from a digital elevation model and remote sensing data when producing a gully erosion susceptibility map (GESM) of Ekbatan Dam Basin, Hamadan, Iran. An inventory map of the gully landforms was prepared based on global positioning system routes of the gullies, extensive field surveys, and visual interpretations of satell…
