Measuring soil erosion by field plots: Understanding the sources of variation

2006

Soil erosion plots of different types and sizes are widely used to investigate the geomorphological processes related to soil erosion. This field method has provided a variety of results, depending on the characteristics of the plots, on their suitability to reflect the ecosystem's characteristics and on the objectives of each particular research. The coupling of real soil loss at patch and slope scale within a landscape and the values obtained by field plots depend, among other things, on how good the methodology performs over a set of ecosystem properties, such as those related with temporal and spatial scale issues, disturbance and representation of natural conditions, and the ability to…

A method to estimate soil moisture from Airborne Hyperspectral Scanner (AHS) and ASTER data: Application to SEN2FLEX and SEN3EXP campaigns

2012

Abstract In this paper the soil moisture is estimated at airborne level and at satellite level by combining remotely sensed images with in situ measurements. At airborne level we process high-resolution images acquired with the Airborne Hyperspectral Scanner (AHS) sensor, and at satellite level we compute images acquired with the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER). The study has been accomplished in the framework of two field campaigns in the Barrax region (Spain): the SEN2FLEX (SENtinel-2 and FLuorescence EXperiment) campaign which was developed in July of 2005 and the SEN3EXP (Sentinel-3 Experiment) campaign which was carried out in June of 2009. The me…

Land Surface Temperature From the Advanced Along-Track Scanning Radiometer: Validation Over Inland Waters and Vegetated Surfaces

2009

The land surface temperature (LST) product of the Advanced Along-Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR) was validated with ground measurements at the following two thermally homogeneous sites: Lake Tahoe, CA/NV, USA, and a large rice field close to Valencia, Spain. The AATSR LST product is based on the split-window technique using the 11- and 12- mum channels. The algorithm coefficients are provided for 13 different land-cover classes plus one lake class (index i). Coefficients are weighted by the vegetation-cover fraction (f). In the operational implementation of the algorithm, i and f are assigned from a global classification and monthly fractional vegetation-cover maps with spatial resolution…

Prototyping algorithm for retrieving FAPAR using MSG data in the context of the LSA SAF project

2007

This paper describes the prototyping algorithm developed for retrieving the Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FAPAR) using MSG data in the framework of satellite application facility on land surface analysis (LSA SAF). The prototyping relies on the Roujean and Breon (1995) method, which is based on simulations of visible and near infrared reflectance values in an optimal geometry. A relationship is found between a vegetation index and daily FAPAR The algorithm has been applied to one year of MSG BRDF data since August 2005, using a temporal frequency of 5-days, and then validated against a set of operational satellite FAPAR products such as MODIS, MERIS, SeaWiFS and …

Soil carbon dynamics during secondary succession in a semi-arid Mediterranean environment

2018

Clarifying which factors cause an increase or decrease in soil organic carbon (SOC) after agricultural abandonment requires integration of data on the temporal dynamics of the plant community and SOC. A chronosequence of abandoned vineyards was studied on a volcanic island (Pantelleria, Italy). Vegetation in the abandoned fields was initially dominated by annual and perennial herbs, then by Hyparrhenia hirta (L.) Stapf, and finally by woody communities. As a consequence, the dominant photosynthetic pathway changed from C3 to C4 and then back to C3. Conversion of a plant community dominated by one photosynthetic pathway to another changes the 13C/12C ratio of inputs to soil organic carbon (S…

Assessing flow resistance law in vegetated channels by dimensional analysis and self-similarity

2019

Abstract In this paper experimental data collected by Kouwen et al., Wilson and Horrit, Raffaelli et al. and Carollo et al., using straight flumes having a bed covered by grass-like vegetation with different stem concentrations, were used to analyze flow resistance for flexible submerged elements. At first, the dimensional analysis and the incomplete self-similarity hypothesis was applied to deduce the flow velocity distribution and the resulting theoretical expression of the Darcy-Weisbach friction factor. Then, a relationship between the Γ function of the velocity profile and the biomechanical characteristics of vegetation, the channel slope, the Reynolds number and the flow Froude number…

Flow resistance due to shrubs and woody vegetation

2023

In this paper, a theoretical open channel flow resistance equation was verified using flow depth and discharge measurements carried out by Freeman et al. in a large channel, 2.44 m wide, for ten different types of uniform-sized plants (shrubs and woody vegetation). The plants, which are broadleaf deciduous vegetation commonly found in floodplains and riparian zones, were placed in staggered rows inside the channel whose bed was constructed to accept plants with their root systems. For each species, the available measurements were carried out by Freeman et al. with plants having different values of plant density, height, and bending stiffness. The available literature database (87 measuremen…
