Vibrational relaxation of Na2 molecules in a triplet state: collisional transfer from a mixed A 1Σu+ − b3Πu gateway level to long-lived levels of b 3…

1997

Abstract Collision-induced vibrational transitions of Na2 within the b 3Π1u state have been observed in a free jet expansion, using two CW dye lasers for the pump and probe steps. The b-state is entered by the pump laser using a low mixed ( A 1 Σ u + − b 3 Π u ) level as a gateway. The occupations of various v′,J′-levels are studied as functions of the position in the flowing gas. The radiative lifetimes of Na2 in levels which had been populated by vibrational relaxation are found to be very long (> 4 μs). Cross-sections are estimated for vibrationally inelastic collisions with Na and Ar atoms.

Stochastic response determination of structural systems modeled via dependent coordinates: a frequency domain treatment based on generalized modal an…

2019

Generalized independent coordinates are typically utilized within an analytical dynamics framework to model the motion of structural and mechanical engineering systems. Nevertheless, for complex systems, such as multi-body structures, an explicit formulation of the equations of motion by utilizing generalized, independent, coordinates can be a daunting task. In this regard, employing a set of redundant coordinates can facilitate the formulation of the governing dynamics equations. In this setting, however, standard response analysis techniques cannot be applied in a straightforward manner. For instance, defining and determining a transfer function within a frequency domain response analysis…

Vibrations of a continuous web on elastic supports

2017

We consider an infinite, homogenous linearly elastic beam resting on a system of linearly elastic supports, as an idealized model for a paper web in the middle of a cylinder-based dryer section. We obtain closed-form analytical expressions for the eigenfrequencies and the eigenmodes. The frequencies increase as the support rigidity is increased. Each frequency is bounded from above by the solution with absolutely rigid supports, and from below by the solution in the limit of vanishing support rigidity. Thus in a real system, the natural frequencies will be lower than predicted by commonly used models with rigid supports. peerReviewed

Optimising the efficiency of olive harvesting considering operator safety

2019

Mechanical-assisted harvesting of olives, which is carried out using hand-held harvesting units that detach the drupes through vibration supplied by electric motor or combustion engines, is a widespread method used in southern Italy. Such machines are able to harvest more than 80% of the overall quantity of olives available per tree in 5–10 min, but their performance is influenced by several factors related to the mechanical characteristics of the device and to the features of the trees. Here the problem of optimising harvesting efficiency whilst minimising the health risks to the operators is investigated, with the aim of demonstrating that it is possible to determine an optimum harvesting…

Rescattering and vibrations in homonuclear diatomic molecules in a strong electromagnetic field

2009

Abstract The electron of a H 2 + driven by a strong electromagnetic field induces molecular vibrations. Numerical and analytical results show that the molecule behaves as a parametric oscillator and can be treated as a kicked oscillator. The results are discussed from the point of view of the electron's periodic dressing and undressing processes.

Perturbative treatment of triple excitations in internally contracted multireference coupled cluster theory.

2012

Internally contracted multireference coupled cluster (ic-MRCC) methods with perturbative treatment of triple excitations are formulated based on Dyall's definition of a zeroth-order Hamiltonian. The iterative models ic-MRCCSDT-1, ic-MRCC3, and their variants ic-MRCCSD(T), ic-MRCC(3) which determine the energy correction from triples by a non-iterative step are consistent in the single-reference limit with CCSDT-1a, CC3, CCSD(T), and CC(3), respectively. Numerical tests on the potential energy surfaces of BeH(2), H(2)O, and N(2) as well as on the structure and harmonic vibrational frequencies of the ozone molecule show that these methods account very well for higher order correlation effects…

Structural and vibrational study of the tautomerism of histamine free-base in solution.

2003

Infrared and Raman spectroscopy in H(2)O and D(2)O and quantum Density Functional calculations were used to determine the structure of histamine free-base in aqueous solution. A quantum mechanical study of the tautomeric equilibrium of histamine free-base in solution was performed at the 6-311G level. Electronic correlation energies were included by using the hybrid functional B3LYP. The solvent was simulated as a continuum characterized by a dielectric constant, and the quantum system (solute) was placed in an ellipsoidal cavity. Solute-solvent electrostatic interaction was calculated by means a multipolar moment expansion introduced in the Hamiltonian. Four relevant histamine conformation…

Advanced models for smart multilayered plates based on Reissner Mixed Variational Theorem

2017

In the present work, families of equivalent singe layer and layer-wise models for the static and free vibrations analysis of magneto-electro-elastic multilayered plates are developed. The models are defined in the framework of a unified formulation, which offers a systematic approach for generating refined plate theories through suitable expansions of the through-the-thickness components of the relevant fields, considering the expansion order as a free parameter. The key features of the developed formulation are: a) the condensation of the electric and magnetic description into the mechanical representation, based on the quasi-static electric-magnetic approximation, which allows to reduce t…

Deterministic and Random Vibration of Linear Systems with Singular Parameter Matrices and Fractional Derivative Terms

2021

Both time- and frequency-domain solution techniques are developed for determining the response of linear multi-degree-of-freedom systems exhibiting singular parameter matrices and endowed with derivative terms of noninteger orders modeled as rational numbers. This is done based on the Moore-Penrose matrix inverse theory, in conjunction with a state variable formulation and with a complex modal analysis treatment. It is worth noting that, for the class of systems considered herein, this treatment also yields decoupled governing equations, thus facilitating further their numerical solution. Next, a generalization of the standard frequency-domain input-output (excitation-response) relationship…
