Determination of the atmospheric neutrino flux and searches for new physics with AMANDA-II

2009

The AMANDA-II detector, operating since 2000 in the deep ice at the geographic South Pole, has accumulated a large sample of atmospheric muon neutrinos in the 100 GeV to 10 TeV energy range. The zenith angle and energy distribution of these events can be used to search for various phenomenological signatures of quantum gravity in the neutrino sector, such as violation of Lorentz invariance (VLI) or quantum decoherence (QD). Analyzing a set of 5511 candidate neutrino events collected during 1387 days of livetime from 2000 to 2006, we find no evidence for such effects and set upper limits on VLI and QD parameters using a maximum likelihood method. On the validity of perturbative studies of the electroweak phase transition in the Two Higgs Doublet model

Abstract Making use of a dimensionally-reduced effective theory at high temperature, we perform a nonperturbative study of the electroweak phase transition in the Two Higgs Doublet model. We focus on two phenomenologically allowed points in the parameter space, carrying out dynamical lattice simulations to determine the equilibrium properties of the transition. We discuss the shortcomings of conventional perturbative approaches based on the resummed effective potential — regarding the insufficient handling of infrared resummation but also the need to account for corrections beyond 1-loop order in the presence of large scalar couplings — and demonstrate that greater accuracy can be achieved …

Resolving the octant of theta(23) with T2K and NOvA

Preliminary results of MINOS experiment indicate that theta(23) is not maximal. Global fits to world neutrino data suggest two nearly degenerate solutions for theta(23): one in the lower octant (LO: theta(23) 45 degrees). v(mu) -> v(e) oscillations in superbeam experiments are sensitive to the octant and are capable of resolving this degeneracy. We study the prospects of this resolution by the current T2K and upcoming NOvA experiments. Because of the hierarchy-delta(CP) degeneracy and the octant delta(CP) degeneracy, the impact of hierarchy on octant resolution has to be taken into account. The Mu3e Data Acquisition

The Mu3e experiment aims to find or exclude the lepton flavour violating decay $\mu^+\to e^+e^-e^+$ with a sensitivity of one in 10$^{16}$ muon decays. The first phase of the experiment is currently under construction at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI, Switzerland), where beams with up to 10$^8$ muons per second are available. The detector will consist of an ultra-thin pixel tracker made from High-Voltage Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (HV-MAPS), complemented by scintillating tiles and fibres for precise timing measurements. Minimal flavor violation in the see-saw portal

We consider an extension of the Standard Model with two singlet leptons, with masses in the electroweak range, that induce neutrino masses via the see-saw mechanism, plus a generic new physics sector at a higher scale, $\Lambda$. We apply the minimal flavor violation (MFV) principle to the corresponding Effective Field Theory ($\nu$SMEFT) valid at energy scales $E \ll \Lambda$. We identify the irreducible sources of lepton flavor and lepton number violation at the renormalizable level, and apply the MFV ans\"atz to derive the scaling of the Wilson coefficients of the $\nu$SMEFT operators up to dimension six. New global fits to $b \to s$ data with all relevant parameters

The LHCb experiment has made several measurements in $b \to s$ transitions which indicate tensions with the Standard Model predictions. Assuming the source of these tensions to be new physics, we present new global fits to all Wilson coefficients which can effectively receive beyond the Standard Model contributions. While the theoretically clean ratios $R_{K^{(*)}}$ which are sensitive to lepton flavour non-universality may unambiguously establish lepton non-universal new physics in the near future, most of the other tensions with the SM in the $b \to s$ data, in particular in the angular observables of the $B\to K^* \mu\mu$ decay and in the branching ratio of the $B_s \to \phi \mu\mu$ deca…

Heavy Neutrinos and Lepton Flavour Violation in Left-Right Symmetric Models at the LHC

We discuss lepton flavour violating processes induced in the production and decay of heavy right-handed neutrinos at the LHC. Such particles appear in left-right symmetrical extensions of the Standard Model as the messengers of neutrino mass generation, and can have masses at the TeV scale. We determine the expected sensitivity on the right-handed neutrino mixing matrix, as well as on the right-handed gauge boson and heavy neutrino masses. By comparing the sensitivity of the LHC with that of searches for low energy LFV processes, we identify favourable areas of the parameter space to explore the complementarity between LFV at low and high energies.

Status of the CPT violating interpretations of the LSND signal

We study the status of the CPT violating neutrino mass spectrum which has been proposed to simultaneously accommodate the oscillation data from LSND, KamLAND, atmospheric and solar neutrino experiments, as well as the non-observation of anti-neutrino disappearance in short-baseline reactor experiments. We perform a three-generation analysis of the global data with the aim of elucidating the viability of this solution. We find no compatibility between the results of the oscillation analysis of LSND and all-but-LSND data sets below 3$\sigma$ CL.
