Challenges in Energy Systems for the Smart- Cities of the Future

2012

In the last years the European Union has actively promoted the renewable energies and the Combined Heat and Power (CHP) also for residential and tertiary buildings. The exploitation of renewable sources and cogeneration seems hampered by the regulatory wall that prohibit for residential, tertiary and commercial buildings the constitution of users clusters. In fact, the unification up to a threshold value of some tens of kVA, at least, can facilitate the installation of renewable energy power plants as solar PV modules or CHP systems (cogeneration) or CCHP systems (tri-generation), overcoming technical and economical barriers and combining several load profiles. The actual distribution syste…

A Multimodal People Recognition System for an Intelligent Environment

2011

In this paper, a multimodal system for recognizing people in intelligent environments is presented. Users are identified and tracked by detecting and recognizing voices and faces through cameras and microphones spread around the environment. This multimodal approach has been chosen to develop a flexible and cheap though reliable system, implemented through consumer electronics. Voice features are extracted through a short time spectrum analysis, while face features are extracted using the eigenfaces technique. The recognition task is achieved through the use of some Support Vector Machines, one per modality, that learn and classify the features of each person, while bindings between modalit…

MCRL: using a reference library to compress a metagenome into a non-redundant list of sequences, considering viruses as a case study

2019

Abstract Motivation Metagenomes offer a glimpse into the total genomic diversity contained within a sample. Currently, however, there is no straightforward way to obtain a non-redundant list of all putative homologs of a set of reference sequences present in a metagenome. Results To address this problem, we developed a novel clustering approach called ‘metagenomic clustering by reference library’ (MCRL), where a reference library containing a set of reference genes is clustered with respect to an assembled metagenome. According to our proposed approach, reference genes homologous to similar sets of metagenomic sequences, termed ‘signatures’, are iteratively clustered in a greedy fashion, re…

Human genetic polymorphisms and risk of viral infection after solid organ transplantation.

2021

The immune system plays a key role in the host defense against viral pathogens. A signaling cascade is activated upon infection involving a variety of molecules such as pattern-recognition receptors (PRRs), interleukins or antiviral interferons. Long-term immunosuppression after solid organ transplantation (SOT) mainly abrogates adaptive T-cell-mediated responses, thus highlighting the relative contribution of innate immunity. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within genes coding for PRRs or soluble mediators have been associated with differential susceptibility to viral infections among SOT recipients. A protective effect against cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection or disease has been att…

Pacientu drošas vides organizēšana intensīvās terapijas nodaļā

2017

Bakalaura darba tēma ir „Pacientu drošas vides organizēšana intensīvās terapijas nodaļā“. Darba mērķis bija noskaidrot, kā pacientiem tiek organizēta droša vide intensīvās terapijas nodaļās. Darbs sastāv no teorētiskās un pētnieciskās daļas. Teorētiskajā daļā iekļauts pacientiem drošas vides apraksts, intensīvās terapijas nodaļā. Intensīvās terapijas nodaļas vides apraksts. Pētniecības daļā iekļauta pētījuma metodoloģija, pētījumā iegūtie rezultāti, analīze un secinājumi. Pētījuma veikšanā tika izmantota kvalitatīvā metode. Pētījuma instrumenti: intervija un novērojumu protokols. Darbs sastāv no 66 lapaspusēm un 6 pielikumiem. Darbā tika izmantoti 37 literatūras avoti, no kuriem 22 bija lat…

Sustainability, Governance and Policy Making

2005

Environmental law is normally aimed at regulating the activities of private as well as public actors so to avoid or reduce damages to the environment. This is often done by forbidding or at least discouraging some conducts, seen as harmful. A strict legal approach is normally oriented to the value of certainty, with regard to such aspects as the interpretation and enforcement of norms, the relationships between actors, their expectations towards the legal system. The legalistic way of thinking is non probabilistic, non causal and non scientific (when judged by the standard of post-positivist empirical science). Another feature of a legalistic approach is often that norms are seen as specifi…

Environmental Effects on Mechanical, Thermophysical and Electrical Properties of Epoxy Resin Filled with Carbon Nanofillers

2019

The aim of this work was to establish the effect of environmental factors (moisture and temperature) on some mechanical, electrical and thermal properties of epoxy-based composites filled with carbon nanofillers: nanotubes (CNT), nanofibers (CNF) and hybrid nanofiller (nanotubes/nanofibers in the ratio 1:1) and to reveal the most environmentally stable NC. First, the nanocomposites (NC) containing different nanofiller contents were prepared to evaluate electrical percolation threshold and to choose NC at certain electrical conductivity for further characterization of the physical properties in initial state and during/after environmental ageing. The environmental ageing consisted of water a…
