Continuous polymer fractionation of poly(methyl vinyl ether) and a new Kuhn-Mark-Houwink relation

Continuous polymer fractionation (CPF) — a new large-scale method — was applied to the technical poly(methyl vinyl ether) (PVME) using toluence as solvent and petroleum ether as non-solvent. Two different devices served as fractionation apparatus, namely a column packed with glass beads and a set of mixer-settler extractors. Advantages and draw-backs of these devices are discussed. The experiments yielded numerous PVME fractions, varying in molar mass from 22 to 87 kg/mol and in molecular non-uniformity U = (M¯w/Mn) – 1 from 0,25 to 0,41 according to gel-permeation chromatography as compared with ca. Shear viscosity of polybutyleneterephthalate/liquid crystal polymer blends

Viscosity measurements have been carried out on blends of polybuty-leneterephthalate (PBT) and a liquid crystalline copolyesteramide (LCP). The flow curves of the blends with LCP content larger than 20%, show a behavior similar to that of the pure LCP, with a rapid rise of the viscosity at low shear rates. The viscosity-composition curves exhibit a deep minimum at low LCP content which may be mainly attributed to the lack of interactions between the two phases.
On the definition of viscosity solutions for parabolic equations

In this short note we suggest a refinement for the definition of viscosity solutions for parabolic equations. The new version of the definition is equivalent to the usual one and it better adapts to the properties of parabolic equations. The basic idea is to determine the admissibility of a test function based on its behavior prior to the given moment of time and ignore what happens at times after that.
Viscosity solutions of the Monge-Ampère equation with the right hand side in Lp

We compare various notions of solutions of Monge-Ampère equations with discontinuous functions on the right hand side. Precisely, we show that the weak solutions defined by Trudinger can be obtained by the vanishing viscosity approximation method. Moreover, we investigate existence and uniqueness of Lp-viscosity solutions.
Influence of resin viscosity and vacuum level on mechanical performance of sandwich structures manufactured by vacuum bagging

The choice of process parameters is critical in optimizing the mechanical properties of sandwich structures produced using the vacuum bagging technique. The aim of this paper is to analyze how the viscosity of the resin/curing agent system and the vacuum level influence the morphology and the mechanical behavior of sandwich beams with composite faces (epoxy resin and glass fiber fabric named COMBI 900) and a PVC foam core. Viscosity studies of solutions of water inn-aliphatic alcohols at various temperatures

Viscosity measurements have been made at 25°C on solutions of water inn-propanol, and at 15, 25, 35, and 45°C on solutions of water inn-butanol,n-pentanol, andn-hexanol over the respective solubility ranges. For most of the systems, water decreases the viscosity of the dry alcohols, while for the lower members of the series literature data report an increase in viscosity on addition of water. These results are rationalized in terms of two kinds of interaction between water molecules and alcohols: participation of water molecules in chain formation for the lower alcohols and formation of water-centered complexes for butanol and higher alcohols.
Polyamide/carbonaceous particles nanocomposites fibers: Morphology and performances

In this work, the influence of carbonaceous particles with different sizes and shapes on the morphology and mechanical performances of polyamide (PA)-based fibers was investigated. Graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) are compared with spherical and rod-like carbon fillers such as carbon black (CB) and multiwall carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The increments of the complex viscosity as well as elastic and loss moduli, in the melt state, assessed by rheological analysis, are reduced by modifying polyamide (PA) matrix with nanofillers in a following order: CNTs > GNP > CB. Gluing the ‘unwettable’: soil-dwelling harvestmen use viscoelastic fluids for capturing springtails

Gluing can be a highly efficient mechanism of prey capture, as it should require less complex sensory–muscular feedback. Whereas it is well known in insects, this mechanism is much less studied in arachnids, except spiders. Soil-dwelling harvestmen (Opiliones, Nemastomatidae) bear drumstick-like glandular hairs (clavate setae) at their pedipalps, which were previously hypothesized to be sticky and used in prey capture. However, clear evidence for this was lacking to date. Using high-speed videography, we found that the harvestman Mitostoma chrysomelas was able to capture fast-moving springtails (Collembola) just by a slight touch of the pedipalp.
