Semi-blind Source Extraction Methods: Application to the measurement of non-contact physiological signs

2018

Non-contact physiological measurements are highlydesirable in many biomedical fields such asdiagnosis of infants, geriartic patients, patients withextreme physical trauma, and fitness and well-being.Remote photoplethysmography is increasingly beingused for non-contact measurement of heart rate fromvideos which is one of the most common biomedicalproperty required for most medical diagnosis. Oneof the common techniques for performing remotephotoplethysmography involves using Blind SourceSeparation (BSS) methods to extract the cardiacsignal from video data.In this context, the objective of this thesis is todevelop different methods in the field of extractionand separation of sources by improv…

Le misure cautelari nei giudizi interstatali sui diritti umani: la prassi recente della Corte internazionale di giustizia e della Corte europea dei d…

2021

In the last few years there has been a significant quantitative increase in requesting interim measures of protection in inter-State cases concerning human rights, namely in inter-State proceedings before the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) and in proceedings before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) grounded on the compromissory clauses included in human rights treaties. In these cases, the ultimate beneficiaries of the interim protection are individuals although, formally, proceedings focus on States’ rights and duties (concerning the protection of human rights). The present paper analyses the recent case-law of the said courts from a double perspective: on the one hand, with…

A Lightweight, User-Controlled System for the Home

2006

This paper explores how we designed, with input from some elderly persons, a multi-agent user-controlled network for the home. The system was designed to support the elderly in living longer at home with minimal support. We describe how our work attempts to tackle issues such as privacy, control of personal space, and enjoyment within the home. As the number of elderly individuals’ increases, a certain amount of information gathering or support may be required to assist the elderly in their homes. However, we strongly believe that we should preserve people’s privacy in their homes and ensure that any artifact we propose is seen as enjoyable, aesthetically pleasing and, most importantly, not…

Margaret Atwood and Adaptation: The Handmaid’s Tale and Beyond

2021

Margaret Atwood has long been appreciated for her ardent defense of Canadian authors and her genre-bending fiction, essays and poetry. However, an aspect of her work that has perhaps been less thoroughly examined is her work both as adaptor and as source for adaptation in media as varied as opera, television, film, or comic books. Recent critically acclaimed television adaptations of the novels The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu) and Alias Grace (Amazon) have rightfully focused attention on these works, but Atwood’s fiction has long been a source of inspiration for artists of various media, a seeming corollary to Atwood’s own tendency to explore the possibilities of media (graphic novels), genres (s…

Fast Computation by Subdivision of Multidimensional Splines and Their Applications

2016

We present theory and algorithms for fast explicit computations of uni- and multi-dimensional periodic splines of arbitrary order at triadic rational points and of splines of even order at diadic rational points. The algorithms use the forward and the inverse Fast Fourier transform (FFT). The implementation is as fast as FFT computation. The algorithms are based on binary and ternary subdivision of splines. Interpolating and smoothing splines are used for a sample rate convertor such as resolution upsampling of discrete-time signals and digital images and restoration of decimated images that were contaminated by noise. The performance of the rate conversion based spline is compared with the…

Large-scale nonlinear dimensionality reduction for network intrusion detection

2017

International audience; Network intrusion detection (NID) is a complex classification problem. In this paper, we combine classification with recent and scalable nonlinear dimensionality reduction (NLDR) methods. Classification and DR are not necessarily adversarial, provided adequate cluster magnification occurring in NLDR methods like $t$-SNE: DR mitigates the curse of dimensionality, while cluster magnification can maintain class separability. We demonstrate experimentally the effectiveness of the approach by analyzing and comparing results on the big KDD99 dataset, using both NLDR quality assessment and classification rate for SVMs and random forests. Since data involves features of mixe…

Are you a Good Employee or Simply a Good Guy? Infl?uence Costs and Contract Design.

2012

We develop a principal-agent model with a moral hazard problem in which the principal has access to a hard signal (the level of output) and a soft signal (the supervision signal) about the agent?s level of effort. We show that the agent?'s ability to manipulate the soft signal increases the cost of implementing the effcient equilibrium, leading to wage compression when the infl?uence cost is privately incurred by the agent. When manipulation activities negatively affect the agent?s productivity through the level of output, the design of infl?uence-free contracts that deter manipulation may lead to high-powered incentives. This result implies that high-productivity workers face incentive sch…
