Index-based triangulation method for efficient generation of large three-dimensional ultrasonic C-scans
2018
The demand for high-speed ultrasonic scanning of large and complex components is driven by a desire to reduce production bottlenecks during the non-destructive evaluation (NDE) of critical parts. Emerging systems (including robotic inspection) allow for the collection of large volumes of data in short time spans, compared to existing inspection systems. To maximise throughput, it is crucial that the reconstructed inspection datasets are generated and evaluated rapidly without loss of detail. This requires new data visualisation and analysis tools capable of mapping complex geometries while guaranteeing full coverage. This paper presents an entirely new approach for the visualisation of thre…
Get a Mac : conversations in Apple's advertising campaign
2015
Mainontaa on nykyaikana lähes kaikkialla. Yksi yleisimmistä mainonnan muodoista on televisiomainokset, joita useat näkevät päivittäin. Tästä esimerkkinä on Applen televisiokampanja, jota esitettiin vuosina 2006–2009. N…

LFA-1 Contributes to Signal I of T-Cell Activation and to the Production of Th1 Cytokines
2010
The beta(2) integrins are important for both transendothelial migration of leukocytes and T-cell activation during antigen presentation. In T cells, triggering of leukocyte functional antigen-1 (LFA-1) is required for full activation and T-helper (Th)1/Th2 differentiation. We used CD18-deficient (CD18(-/-)) mice to examine the role of LFA-1 in the activation of T cells. Compared with wild-type controls, CD18(-/-) T cells proliferated normally when stimulated with antibodies against CD3 and CD28, but secreted significantly less IFN-gamma and IL-2 than their wild-type counterparts. However, when T cells were stimulated with dendritic cells (DCs) that provide additional LFA-1 ligation, the pro…
Generation of human pulmonary microvascular endothelial cell lines.
2001
The limited lifespan of human microvascular endothelial cells in cell culture represents a major obstacle for the study of microvascular pathobiology. To date, no endothelial cell line is available that demonstrates all of the fundamental characteristics of microvascular endothelial cells. We have generated endothelial cell lines from human pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells (HPMEC) isolated from adult donors. HPMEC were cotransfected with a plasmid encoding the catalytic component of telomerase (hTERT) and a plasmid encoding the simian virus 40 (SV40) large T antigen. Cells transfected with either plasmid alone had an extended lifespan, but the cultures eventually entered crisis aft…
Matrix-mediated canal formation in primmorphs from the sponge Suberites domuncula involves the expression of a CD36 receptor-ligand system.
2004
Sponges (Porifera), represent the phylogenetically oldest metazoan phylum still extant today. Recently, molecular biological studies provided compelling evidence that these animals share basic receptor/ligand systems, especially those involved in bodyplan formation and in immune recognition, with the higher metazoan phyla. An in vitro cell/organ-like culture system, the primmorphs, has been established that consists of proliferating and differentiating cells, but no canals of the aquiferous system. We show that after the transfer of primmorphs from the demosponge Suberites domuncula to a homologous matrix (galectin), canal-like structures are formed in these 3D-cell aggregates. In parallel …
The gp130-stimulating designer cytokine hyper-IL-6 promotes the expansion of human hematopoietic progenitor cells capable to differentiate into funct…
2000
Abstract Objective . Hyper-IL-6, a fusion protein of interleukin-6 and its specific receptor, together with stem cell factor leads to the proliferation of primitive hematopoietic progenitor cells. Based on these findings, the current study examined whether hyper-IL-6 promotes the growth of precursor cells that can be further differentiated into dendritic cells in the presence of additional cytokines. Methods . Dendritic cell cultures were generated from CD34 + hematopoietic progenitor cells derived either from bone marrow or from peripheral blood. CD34 + cells were cultured in the presence of cytokines for 2 weeks and then used for phenotyping and T-cell stimulation assays. Results . Hyper-…
Characterization of lung γδ T cells following intranasal infection with Mycobacterium bovis bacillus Calmette-Guérin
2002
The lungs are considered to have an impaired capacity to contain infection by pathogenic mycobacteria, even in the presence of effective systemic immunity. In an attempt to understand the underlying cellular mechanisms, we characterized the gammadelta T cell population following intranasal infection with Mycobacterium bovis bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG). The peak of gammadelta T cell expansion at 7 days postinfection preceded the 30 day peak of alphabeta T cell expansion and bacterial count. The expanded population of gammadelta T cells in the lungs of BCG-infected mice represents an expansion of the resident Vgamma2 T cell subset as well as an influx of Vgamma1 and of four different Vdelt…
Proliferative response of CD4+ T cells and hepatitis B virus clearance in chronic hepatitis with or without hepatitis B e-minus hepatitis B virus mut…
1995
To assess the significance of cell-mediated immunity, T cells were derived from the peripheral blood and liver tissue of hepatitis B virus (HBV)-infected patients and controls. The analysis of the 3H-thymidine-uptake in response to a panel of recombinant HBV antigens revealed that peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) of the 25 viremic patients with inflammatory active, chronic hepatitis B, 16 with wild-type and nine with HBe-minus HBV mutant infection, showed stronger proliferative responses to HBc and HBe antigens than 16 asymptomatic nonviremic HBsAg carriers with normal aminotransferase levels (HBc: SI 19.3 +/- 3.9 vs. 13.0 +/- 3.2 vs. 8.0 +/- 1.2; P.01 and HBe: SI 16.6 +/- 4.0 vs. …
Liver-infiltrating and circulating CD4+ T cells in chronic hepatitis C: immunodominant epitopes, HLA-restriction and functional significance.
2008
The aim was to assess the specificity and functional significance of liver-infiltrating and peripheral blood T cells in chronic hepatitis C. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells hepatitis C virus from 50 of 58 (86.2%) patients with chronic hepatitis C virus infection and 6 of 28 (21.4%) controls showed a proliferative T cell response to at least one of 16 synthetic peptides covering highly conserved regions of the core, envelope (El) and non-structural regions (NS4) of hepatitis C virus. However, six immunodominant peptides were exclusively recognized by the proliferating blood mononuclear cells from 46 patients with chronic hepatitis C virus infection (79.3%). Fine specificity and HLA-restri…
