Stereoscopic 3D visualization of particle fields reconstructed from digital inline holograms

2010

Abstract Holography is a powerful tool as it codes information, e.g. on 3D positions in a particle field in a single 2D hologram. In digital holography, the holograms are recorded on a digital image sensor. It is a particular challenge to visualize a digital hologram's depth information, such that it can be understood intuitively while retaining the advantages of a numerical reconstruction. In this contribution it is suggested and demonstrated how a numerically constructed volume can be used to calculate stereoscopic views, which even in the case of non-diffuse illumination allow for an intuitive visualization of particles’ positions in 3D space.

Managing IFC for civil engineering projects

2003

The "Industrial Foundation Classes" (IFC) are an ISO norm to define all components of a building in a civil engineering project. IFC files are textual files whose size can reach 100 megabytes. Several IFC files can coexist on the same civil engineering project. Due to their size, their handling and sharing is a complex task. In this paper, we present an approach to automatically identify business objects in the IFC files and simplify their visualization and manipulation on the Internet. We construct an IFC Viewer which transforms the IFC file into a XML IFC tree manipulated through the 3D visualization of the building. The IFC Viewer composed a web-based platform called ACTIVe3D BUILD SERVE…

A Low-Cost Multi-Modal Auditory-Visual-Tactile Framework for Remote Touch

2020

International audience; Haptic technology for human augmentation provides gains in ability for different applications, whether the aim is to enhance "disabilities" to "abilities", or "abilities" to "super-abilities". Commercially-available devices are generally expensive and tailored to specific applications and hardware. To give researchers a haptic feedback system that is economical, customisable, and fast to fabricate, our group developed a low-cost immersive haptic, audio, and visual experience built by using off-the-shelf (COTS) components. It is composed of a vibrotactile glove, a Leap Motion sensor, and an head-mounted display, integrated together to provide compelling immersive sens…

Guest Editorial Three-Dimensional Displays and Visualization

2010

THREE-DIMENSIONAL (3D) imaging and display is a natural concept for humans as it is a common vision attribute of our binocular vision, perception, and brain processing. However, until recently, our experiences have been mainly limited to the technologically inferior two-dimensional (2D) as evidenced from widespread use of 2D photography, cinema, and liquid crystal or LED-display for television, computer displays, etc.

Analysis and Visualization of Product Memory Layout in IP-XACT

2017

Modern ASIC and FPGA based embedded products use model based design, in which both hardware and software are developed in parallel. Previously HW was completed first and the information handed over to SW team, typically in the form of register tables. The information was even manually copied to SW code, making any changes error-prone and laborious. IP-XACT is the most feasible standard to model HW also for the SW needs. The HW design connectivity and overall memory layout may change due to component instantiations, configurations and conditional operation states, which makes it difficult to create register tables even for documentation. Current register design tools fall short in serving th…

An Online Observer for Minimization of Pulsating Torque in SMPM Motors.

2015

A persistent problem of surface mounted permanent magnet (SMPM) motors is the non-uniformity of the developed torque. Either the motor design or the motor control needs to be improved in order to minimize the periodic disturbances. This paper proposes a new control technique for reducing periodic disturbances in permanent magnet (PM) electro-mechanical actuators, by advancing a new observer/estimator paradigm. A recursive estimation algorithm is implemented for online control. The compensating signal is identified and added as feedback to the control signal of the servo motor. Compensation is evaluated for different values of the input signal, to show robustness of the proposed method.

Mesh Visual Quality Assessment Metrics: A Comparison Study

2017

3D graphics technologies have known a developed progress in the last years, and several processing operations can be applied on 3D meshes such as watermarking, compression, simplification and so forth. Mesh visual quality assessment becomes an important issue to evaluate the visual appearance of the 3D shape after specific modifications. Several metrics have been proposed in this context, from the classical distance-based metrics to the perceptual-based metrics which include perceptual information about the human visual system. In this paper, we propose to study the performance of several mesh visual quality metrics. First, the comparison is conducted regardless the distortion types neither…

Realistic Implementation of the Particle Model for the Visualization of Nanoparticle Precipitation and Growth

2019

An application for visualizing the aggregation of structureless atoms is presented. The application allows us to demonstrate on a qualitative basis, as well as by quantitatively monitoring the aggregate surface/volume ratio, that the enhanced reactivity of nanoparticles can be connected with their large specific surface. It is suggested that, along with the use of geometric analogies, this bottom-up approach can be effective in discussing the enhanced reactivity proprieties of nanoparticles. The application is based on a two-dimensional realistic dynamic model where atoms move because of their thermal and interaction potential energies, and the trajectories are determined by solving numeric…

Study of drilling and welding laser : dynamics of keyhole

2011

The aim of the present work is to study experimentally the formation of the capillary during the drilling and welding by laser beam and to develop the numerical simulation which allows following the dynamics and the evolution of the keyhole. The zinc was chosen as a test material because its thermodynamical properties are well known. To simplify the problem, in the first place the drilling mechanism was studied. Two experimental methods were used to characterize the evolution of the keyhole: the Direct Observation of Drilled Hole method, which allows the visualization of the keyhole after the application of laser pulses of different durations, and Zn-Quartz method, which allows the direct o…
