At least since Habousch’s proof of Kempf’s vanishing theorem, Frobenius splitting techniques have played a crucial role in geometric representation theory and algebraic geometry over a field of positive characteristic. In this article we survey some recent developments which grew out of the confluence of Frobenius splitting techniques and tight closure theory and which provide a framework for higher dimension geometry in positive characteristic. We focus on local properties, i.e. singularities, test ideals, and local cohomology on the one hand and global geometric applicatioms to vanishing theorems and lifting of sections on the other.
Determination of an empirical law of aluminium and magnesium alloys absorption coefficient during Nd :YAG laser interaction

International audience; Welding laser modelling requires knowledge about relative changes of many thermo-physical parameters involved in the interaction. The absorptivity of the material is one of the most important. In this study, experimental measurements of absorptivity with an integrating sphere on two alloys (aluminium and magnesium) were made. These results were compared with an analytical calculation that takes into account the trapping of the beam by multiple reflections inside the keyhole. Migration kinetics of ion-implanted beryllium in glassy carbon

Abstract Migration kinetics of low-concentration implanted 7 Be in glassy carbon has been studied by the modified radiotracer technique at temperatures 1285 °C and 1340 °C. The annealed sample concentration profiles show two distinctive components: (i) Main profile broadening assigned to beryllium trapping in defects during annealing. (ii) Tail parts on both sides of the profile maximum related to faster migration. Of the latter the profile representing bulk diffusion lies on the region free of defect influence and is well described by concentration-independent diffusivity. Optimum Design and Performance of an Electron Gun for a Ka-Band TWT

This paper deals with optimum design and development of a thermionic electron gun to meet specified beam requirements within defined electric and geometric constraints for a Ka -band traveling wave tube (TWT) for space applications. The electron gun design is based on the Pierce method and carried out according to the iterative process indicated by Vaughan. The design of a periodic permanent magnet (PPM) beam focusing system for the stability of the beam is also required. A Novel Method for Characterizing Temperature Sensitivity of Silicon Wafers and Cells

In this paper, we present a novel method to obtain temperature dependent lifetime and implied-open-circuit voltage (iV OC ) images of silicon wafers and solar cells. First, the method is validated by comparing the obtained values with global values acquired from lifetime measurements (for wafers) and current-voltage measurements (for cells). The method is then extended to acquire spatially resolved images of iV OC temperature coefficients of silicon wafers and cells. A half-metallic half-Heusler alloy having the largest atomic-like magnetic moment at optimized lattice constant

For half-Heusler alloys, the general formula is XYZ, where X can be a transition or alkali metal element, Y is another transition metal element, typically Mn or Cr, and Z is a group IV element or a pnicitide. The atomic arrangements within a unit-cell show three configurations. Before this study, most of the predictions of half-metallic properties of half-Heusler alloys at the lattice constants differing from their optimized lattice constant. Based on the electropositivity of X and electronegativity of Z for half-Heusler alloys, we found that one of the configurations of LiCrS exhibits half-metallic properties at its optimized lattice constant of 5.803Å, and has the maximum atomic-like magn…
Rivalry of diffusion, external field and gravity in micro-convection of magnetic colloids

Magnetic fields and magnetic materials have promising microfluidic applications. For example, magnetic micro-convection can enhance mixing considerably. However, previous studies have not explained increased effective diffusion during this phenomenon. Here we show that enhanced interface smearing comes from a gravity induced convective motion within a thin microfluidic channel, caused by a small density difference between miscible magnetic and non-magnetic fluids. This motion resembles diffusive behavior and can be described with an effective diffusion coefficient. Preparation, Characterisation and Dielectric Properties of YBa2Cu3O7-δ/ Insulator-Heterostructures

YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-δ /insulator/Au-heterostructures on SrTiO 3 or LaAlO 3 substrates were prepared to study the properties of the materials SrTiO 3 , BaTiO 3 and Ceo 2 . X-ray diffraction measurements in Bragg-Brentano geometry show c-axis-oriented growth for the superconductor and the insulators SrTiO 3 and CeO 2 . Typical values for the rocking curve width of the different insulating films are between 0.4° and 0.8°. The highest breakdown fields are measured for the insulator SrTiO 3 with +37.5 kV/mm and -8.8 kV/mm. The permittivity for CeO 2 is independent of applied field and only weakly temperature dependent. Design and experimental validation of a magnetic device for stem cell culture.

Cell culture of bone and tendon tissues requires mechanical stimulation of the cells in order to mimic their physiological state. In the present work, a device has been conceived and developed to generate a controlled magnetic field with a homogeneous gradient in the working space. The design requirement was to maximize the magnetic flux gradient, assuring a minimum magnetizing value in a 15 mm × 15 mm working area, which highly increases the normal operating range of this sort of devices.
