Usefulness of omp1 restriction mapping for avian Chlamydia psittaci isolate differentiation

1995

Abstract Sixty-five avian Chlamydia psittaci isolates collected worldwide, including 27 previously characterized reference strains, were analysed by restriction mapping of the major outer membrane protein gene ( omp1 ) obtained after DMA amplification by PCR. They were compared to 2 ruminant isolates, a feline pneumonitis and a guinea pig inclusion conjunctivitis (GPIC) isolate. According to their omp1 restriction patterns, avian strains were heterogeneous in that they exhibited 6 and 4 distinct patterns using Alu I and Mbo II restriction enzymes, respectively, thus defining 7 groups. However, 84% of the studied strains belonged to groups 1 to 4, which share a specific fragment triplet of 4…

A comparative quantitative & qualitative assessment in orthodontic treatment of white spot lesion treated with 3 different commercially available mat…

2019

Background To comparatively evaluate the esthetic improvement of white-spot lesions (WSLs) treated by: BiominF, CPP-ACP paste with fluoride & ICON resin infiltration, using Spectrophotometer & Diagnodent. Material and Methods The study was done using 72 sound permanent extracted premolars, divided into four groups (18 teeth per group). After taking the ethical approval the study was commenced. WSLs were created on human premolars and randomly assigned to four groups: Group A: Artificial Saliva, Group B: CPP-ACP with fluoride, Group C: BiominF, Group D: Resin infiltration (Icon). The color change (∆E) of each specimen was measured with a Spectrophotometer (VITA Easy Shade Compact), and fluor…

Synthesis and Biological Properties of Benzothiazole, Benzoxazole, and Chromen-4-one Analogues of the Potent Antitumor Agent 2-(3,4-Dimethoxyphenyl)-…

2008

New fluorinated 2-aryl-benzothiazoles, -benzoxazoles, and -chromen-4-ones have been synthesized and their activity against MCF-7 and MDA 468 breast cancer cell lines compared with the potent antitumor benzothiazole 5. Analogues such as 9a, b and 12a, d yielded submicromolar GI50 values in both cell lines; however, none of the new compounds approached 5 in terms of antitumor potency. For 5, binding to the aryl hydrocarbon receptor appeared to be necessary but not sufficient for growth inhibition.

The Extracellular Vesicles of the Helminth Pathogen, Fasciola hepatica : Biogenesis Pathways and Cargo Molecules Involved in Parasite Pathogenesis

2015

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) released by parasites have important roles in establishing and maintaining infection. Analysis of the soluble and vesicular secretions of adult Fasciola hepatica has established a definitive characterisation of the total secretome of this zoonotic parasite. Fasciola secretes at least two sub-populations of EVs that differ according to size, cargo molecules and site of release from the parasite. The larger EVs are released from the specialised cells that line the parasite gastrodermus and contain the zymogen of the 37 kDa cathepsin L peptidase that performs a digestive function. The smaller exosome-like vesicle population originate from multivesicular bodies with…

Heterometallic titanium–gold complexes inhibit renal cancer cells in vitro and in vivo

2015

Following recent work on heterometallic titanocene-gold complexes as potential chemotherapeutics for renal cancer, we report here on the synthesis, characterization and stability studies of new titanocene complexes containing a methyl group and a carboxylate ligand (mba = S-C6H4-COO-) bound to gold(I)-phosphane fragments through a thiolate group ([(η-C5H5)2TiMe(μ-mba)Au(PR3)]. The compounds are more stable in physiological media than those previously reported and are highly cytotoxic against human cancer renal cell lines. We describe here preliminary mechanistic data involving studies on the interaction of selected compounds with plasmid (pBR322) DNA used as a model nucleic acid, and with s…

Tributyltin affects phagocytic activity of Ciona intestinalis hemocytes

1995

Organotin compounds have been used in marine anti-fouling paints as biocides. Because tunicates are vulnerable to these compounds in their natural habitats, we used Ciona intestinalis to establish an assay for phagocytosis in vitro of yeast by hemocytes after exposure to different concentrations (0.0015, 0.015, 0.15 and 1.5 microM) of four organotin compounds: tributyltin (TBT), triphenyltin (TPT), dibutyltin (DBT) and diphenyltin (DPT). To evaluate the phagocytic activity, we used a method based on fluorescence excitation of yeast pre-treated with eosin-Y. The percentage of phagocytosis decreased from 45.1 +/- 3.49 to 22.4 +/- 5.14 at 1.5 microM of TBT (P0.001); it was significantly reduce…
