Calcium binding and ionic conduction in single conical nanopores with polyacid chains: model and experiments.

2012

Calcium binding to fixed charge groups confined over nanoscale regions is relevant to ion equilibrium and transport in the ionic channels of the cell membranes and artificial nanopores. We present an experimental and theoretical description of the dissociation equilibrium and transport in a single conical nanopore functionalized with pH-sensitive carboxylic acid groups and phosphonic acid chains. Different phenomena are simultaneously present in this basic problem of physical and biophysical chemistry: (i) the divalent nature of the phosphonic acid groups fixed to the pore walls and the influence of the pH and calcium on the reversible dissociation equilibrium of these groups; (ii) the asym…

Generation of nonlinear current-voltage characteristics. A general method

2002

International audience; A general method allowing to construct nonlinear resistors with arbitrary current-voltage (I-V) characteristics is proposed. The example of a cubic I-V characteristic is presented showing a perfect agreement between the theoretical desired resistor and its electronic realization based on analog multipliers.

An approach to the optimum design of the magnetic circuit of a PM linear electrical generator driven by stochastical forces

2006

Linear electrical generator has been recently studied for the exploitation of sea waves energy. In order to maximize the energy extraction, the stochastic features of the energy source must be included in the mathematical model of the system. A PM linear electrical generator has been designed and built. The design has been optimized by including in the mathematical model used for the optimization the following aspects: 1. the dynamic and stochastic features of the waves; 2. a dynamic model of the hydraulic conversion system; 3. a parametric circuit model of the magnetic circuit as well as of the electric windings; 4. a circuit model of the power electronics converter used to connect the gen…

Voltage stability of Small Hydro Generator Based DC Microgrid

2019

Hydro energy is the vigorous form of renewable energy sources (RES) to generate electricity. It is considered to be an efficient source among the RES due to its abundant potential. Based on the scale at which the power has been generated, operating head, hydro generators are classified into large, small, micro, pico generators. In this paper, a hand in hand approach of inner and outer control loop strategy is proposed to accomplish the voltage stability of a small hydro generator based DC microgrid (MG). The DC MG considered in this paper is operating under the unusual condition where solar, wind and main grid are off due to irregularity. Moreover, the load is of varying nature. Outer contr…

Association of Whirlin with Cav1.3 (α1D) Channels in Photoreceptors, Defining a Novel Member of the Usher Protein Network

2010

Contains fulltext : 88383.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) PURPOSE: Usher syndrome is the most common form of hereditary deaf-blindness. It is both clinically and genetically heterogeneous. The USH2D protein whirlin interacts via its PDZ domains with other Usher-associated proteins containing a C-terminal type I PDZ-binding motif. These proteins co-localize with whirlin at the region of the connecting cilium and at the synapse of photoreceptor cells. This study was undertaken to identify novel, Usher syndrome-associated, interacting partners of whirlin and thereby obtain more insights into the function of whirlin. METHODS: The database of ciliary proteins was searched for proteins…

GRID STABILITY IMPROVEMENT BY RES-BASED GENERATORS AND BATTERY ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEMS IN SMALL ISLANDS

2021

The integration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) with power electronics interface to the grid, without the back-up of rotating inertia, endangers frequency stability. This issue becomes particularly critical in isolated power systems, like those of small islands not supplied by the main grid, in the case of high shares of production from unpredictable renewables such as photovoltaic and wind sources. Consequently, to preserve the security and the reliability of these systems, it is necessary to adopt new frequency adjustments mechanisms. In this context, the thesis investigates the transition toward an economically and technically feasible generating system based on RES, to achieve specifi…

Decoupled Control Scheme of Grid-Connected Split-Source Inverters

2017

During the last few years, single-stage power conversion systems has undergone a fast evolution to replace the conventional two-stage architecture, which includes a front-end dc-dc boost converter (BC) and an output voltage source inverter (VSI) [1]. This evolution has grown up to improve the overall system performance in terms of reducing its size, weight, and complexity. Most of these single-stage topologies and their different modulation schemes have been reviewed in [1]. Among these different single-stage options, the split-source inverter (SSI), shown in Figure 1, has been recently proposed in [2] as a single-stage dc-ac power converter topology to overcome some demerits in the other s…

Phenolic and Antioxidant Analysis of Olive Leaves Extracts (Olea europaea L.) Obtained by High Voltage Electrical Discharges (HVED)

2019

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate high voltage electrical discharges (HVED) as a green technology, in order to establish the effectiveness of phenolic extraction from olive leaves against conventional extraction (CE). HVED parameters included different green solvents (water, ethanol), treatment times (3 and 9 min), gases (nitrogen, argon), and voltages (15, 20, 25 kV). Methods: Phenolic compounds were characterized by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometer (UPLC-MS/MS), while antioxidant potency (total phenolic content and antioxidant capacity) were monitored spectrophotometrically. Data for Near infrared spectroscopy (NIR) spectroscopy, colorimetry…

Homodyne Solid-State Biased Coherent Detection of Ultra-Broadband Terahertz Pulses with Static Electric Fields.

2021

We present an innovative implementation of the solid-state-biased coherent detection (SSBCD) technique, which we have recently introduced for the reconstruction of both amplitude and phase of ultra-broadband terahertz pulses. In our previous works, the SSBCD method has been operated via a heterodyne scheme, which involves demanding square-wave voltage amplifiers, phase-locked to the THz pulse train, as well as an electronic circuit for the demodulation of the readout signal. Here, we demonstrate that the SSBCD technique can be operated via a very simple homodyne scheme, exploiting plain static bias voltages. We show that the homodyne SSBCD signal turns into a bipolar transient when the stat…

Validation of high voltage power supplies for the 1-inch photomultipliers of AugerPrime, the Pierre Auger Observatory upgrade

2022

In the framework of the upgrade of the Pierre Auger Observatory, a new high voltage module is being employed for the power supply of the 1-inch photomultiplier added to each water-Cherenkov detector of the surface array with the aim of increasing the dynamic range of the measurements. This module is located in a dedicated box near the electronics and comprises a low consumption DC-DC converter hosted inside an aluminum box. All the modules have undergone specific tests to verify their reliability in the extreme environmental conditions of the Argentinian pampa. In this paper, we describe the validation procedure and the facility developed to this aim. The successful results of the tests on …
