Assessment of the cardiostimulant action of propionyl-L-carnitine on chronically volume-overloaded rat hearts.

1993

Chronic volume overload was induced in young rats of Wistar strain by surgical opening of the aorto-caval fistula. Three months later, during in vitro perfusion with exogenous palmitate, left ventricular function and energy turnover (QO2) of hypertrophied hearts were severely depressed. This seemed to be related to impaired long-chain fatty acid utilization, as reflected by decreased 14CO2 production from U-14C-palmitate and decreased tissue levels of L-carnitine. Another group of rats exposed to chronic volume overload was pretreated for 2 weeks before sacrifice with propionyl-L-carnitine (250 mg/kg/day), and the hearts were perfused with 1.2 mM palmitate and 10 mM propionyl-L-carnitine. A new tool for sepsis screening in the Emergency Department

2021

Abstract Objectives In this study, we developed and evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of the Sepsis Index for early sepsis screening in the Emergency Department (ED). Methods Sepsis Index is based on the combination of monocyte distribution width (MDW) and mean monocyte volume (MMV). Sepsis Index≥1 was selected to define sepsis. We tested its diagnostic accuracy in an ED population stratified in four groups: controls, Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS), infection, and sepsis, according to Sepsis-2 criteria. Results Patients with sepsis displayed higher median Sepsis Index value than patients without sepsis. At the receiver operating characterictis (ROC) curve analysis for the pr…

Mean platelet volume in arterial and venous thrombotic disorders

2020

Abstract The mean platelet volume (MPV) is an easy, rapid and inexpensive laboratory parameter which basically mirrors platelet size. Due to the essential role of platelets in hemostasis, many studies have assessed the MPV value in patients with arterial and venous thrombotic disorders. These have then been summarized in some interesting meta-analyses and recent studies that will be discussed in this narrative review. Taken together, the currently available evidence suggests that the MPV may be substantially increased in concomitance with acute episodes of coronary artery disease, venous thromboembolism, portal vein thrombosis, stroke, erectile dysfunction and preeclampsia. In many of these…

Fluticasone propionate/formoterol: a fixed-combination therapy with flexible dosage.

2014

International guidelines describe asthma control as the main outcome of asthma management. Prevention of symptoms, improved quality of life, and reduction of exacerbations are the main components, consequently decreasing health care costs. However, many of these objectives remain unmet in real life: several surveys show that a large proportion of asthmatic patients are not well controlled despite the efficacy of current available treatment. Several randomized controlled clinical trials indicate that combining inhaled corticosteroids and long-acting β2-agonists, by means of a single inhaler, greatly improves the management of the disease. The results of 9 multicenter phase III clinical studi…

Increasing power to predict mild cognitive impairment conversion to Alzheimer's disease using hippocampal atrophy rate and statistical shape models

2010

Identifying mild cognitive impairment (MCI) subjects who will convert to clinical Alzheimer's disease (AD) is important for therapeutic decisions, patient counselling and clinical trials. Hippocampal volume and rate of atrophy predict clinical decline at the MCI stage and progression to AD. In this paper, we create p-maps from the differences in the shape of the hippocampus between 60 normal controls and 60 AD subjects using statistical shape models, and generate different regions of interest (ROI) by thresholding the p-maps at different significance levels. We demonstrate increased statistical power to classify 86 MCI converters and 128 MCI stable subjects using the hippocampal atrophy rat…

Echocardiography to estimate high filling pressure in patients with heart failure and reduced ejection fraction

2020

Aims: Echocardiographic assessment of left ventricular filling pressures is performed using a multi-parametric algorithm. Unselected sample of patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) patients may demonstrate an indeterminate status of diastolic indices making interpretation challenging. We sought to test improvement in the diagnostic accuracy of standard and strain echocardiography of the left ventricle and left atrium (LA) to estimate a pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PCWP) > 15 mmHg in patients with HFrEF. Methods and results: Out of 82 consecutive patients, 78 patients were included in the final analysis and right heat catheterization, and echocardiogram…

Long-term effects of graduated compression stockings on cardiorespiratory performance

2015

ABSTRACT: The use of graduated compression stockings (GCS) in sport has been increasing in the last years due to their potential positive effects for athletes. However, there is little evidence to support whether these types of garments actually improve cardiorespiratory performance. The aim of this study was to examine the cardiorespiratory responses of GCS during running after three weeks of regular use. Twenty recreational runners performed three tests on different days: test 1) ¿ a 5-min maximal effort run in order to determine the participants¿ maximal aerobic speed; and tests 2) and 3) ¿ a fatigue running test of 30 minutes at 80% of their maximal aerobic speed with either GCS or PLAC…

Left ventricular volume determination using colour superpositioning of contrast echocardiograms

1995

Abstract Objective: To delineate the endocardium, selective colouring of contrast regions in left ventricular contrast echocardiograms was performed using digital image processing. Methods: Volume determinations were performed in end-diastolic and end-systolic frames before and after the injection of contrast agent into the left ventricle and were compared to cineventriculograms in 30 patients by two independent investigators. Results: The mean end-diastolic volume measured was 114 ± 44 ml in the native, 235 ± 79 ml in the contrast, 175 ± 70 ml in the color-superimposed (observer 1), and 187 ± 79 ml in the cineventriculographic images. Thus, native echocardiograms underestimated angiographi…

Reliability and Accuracy of Echocardiography for Follow-up Studies after Intervention

1987

By two-dimensional echocardiography limitations of M-mode echocardiography have been eliminated. As a direct and noninvasive method two-dimensional echocardiography seems to be an ideal method for analysis of left ventricular function in follow-up studies. In relation to other methods there are no limitations concerning x-ray exposure, physicians and patients safety. Before different studies can be discussed, reliability and accuracy of two-dimensional echocardiography have to be evaluated. Beat-to-beat, day-to-day, intra- and interobserver variability will be discussed, followed by description of follow-up studies after intervention.
