Pressure-decay testing of pleural air leaks in intact murine lungs: evidence for peripheral airway regulation.

2018

Abstract The critical care management of pleural air leaks can be challenging in all patients, but particularly in patients on mechanical ventilation. To investigate the effect of central airway pressure and pleural pressure on pulmonary air leaks, we studied orotracheally intubated mice with pleural injuries. We used clinically relevant variables – namely, airway pressure and pleural pressure – to investigate flow through peripheral air leaks. The model studied the pleural injuries using a pressure‐decay maneuver. The pressure‐decay maneuver involved a 3 sec ramp to 30 cmH20 followed by a 3 sec breath hold. After pleural injury, the pressure‐decay maneuver demonstrated a distinctive airway…

An elevated body mass index increases lung volume but reduces airflow in italian schoolchildren

2013

Background Asthma and obesity are important and growing health issues worldwide. Obesity is considered a risk factor for asthma, due to the induction of changes in airway mechanics and altered airway inflammation. Methods We cross-sectionally investigated the effect of increased weight on pulmonary function in a large population sample of healthy children, aged 10–17 yrs living in Palermo, Italy. Explanatory effect of weight on lung function variables were evaluated by multiple linear regression models, taking into account height, gender, and age-class. Results Among the 2,393 subjects, FVC and FEV1 were positively correlated to weight. Multiple regression models showed that the weight beta…

Mass Transport Analysis of the Enhanced Buffer Capacity of the Bicarbonate-CO2 Buffer in a Phase-Heterogenous System: Physiological and Pharmaceutica…

2018

The bicarbonate buffer capacity is usually considered in a phase-homogeneous system, at equilibrium, with no CO2 transfer between the liquid buffer phase and another phase. However, typically, an in vitro bicarbonate buffer-based system is a phase-heterogeneous system, as it entails continuously sparging (bubbling) the dissolution medium with CO2 in a gas mixture, at constant ratio, to maintain a constant partial pressure of CO2 (g) and CO2(aq) molarity at a prescribed value, with CO2 diffusing freely between the gas and the aqueous phases. The human gastrointestinal tract is also a phase-heterogeneous system, with CO2 diffusing across the mucosal membrane into the mesenteric arterial blood…

Representation of capacity drop at a road merge via point constraints in a first order traffic model

2018

We reproduce the capacity drop phenomenon at a road merge by implementing a non-local point constraint at the junction in a first order traffic model. We call capacity drop the situation in which the outflow through the junction is lower than the receiving capacity of the outgoing road, as too many vehicles trying to access the junction from the incoming roads hinder each other. In this paper, we first construct an enhanced version of the locally constrained model introduced by Haut et al. (Proceedings 16th IFAC World Congress. Prague, Czech Republic 229 (2005) TuM01TP/3), then we propose its counterpart featuring a non-local constraint and finally we compare numerically the two models by c…

Introduction The objective was to study the effects of a novel lung volume optimization procedure (LVOP) using highfrequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) upon gas exchange, the transpulmonary pressure (TPP), and hemodynamics in a porcine model of surfactant depletion. Methods With institutional review board approval, the hemodynamics, blood gas analysis, TPP, and pulmonary shunt fraction were obtained in six anesthetized pigs before and after saline lung lavage. Measurements were acquired during pressure-controlled ventilation (PCV) prior to and after lung damage, and during a LVOP with HFOV. The LVOP comprised a recruitment maneuver with a continuous distending pressure (CDP) of 45 mbar …

Sprouting and intussusceptive angiogenesis in postpneumonectomy lung growth: mechanisms of alveolar neovascularization

2013

In most rodents and some other mammals, the removal of one lung results in compensatory growth associated with dramatic angiogenesis and complete restoration of lung capacity. One pivotal mechanism in neoalveolarization is neovascularization, because without angiogenesis new alveoli can not be formed. The aim of this study is to image and analyze three-dimensionally the different patterns of neovascularization seen following pneumonectomy in mice on a sub-micron-scale. C57/BL6 mice underwent a left-sided pneumonectomy. Lungs were harvested at various timepoints after pneumonectomy. Volume analysis by microCT revealed a striking increase of 143 percent in the cardiac lobe 14 days after pneum…

Visualization of alveolar recruitment in a porcine model of unilateral lung lavage using3He-MRI

2009

BACKGROUND: In the acute respiratory distress syndrome potentially recruitable lung volume is currently discussed. (3)He-magnetic resonance imaging ((3)He-MRI) offers the possibility to visualize alveolar recruitment directly. METHODS: With the approval of the state animal care committee, unilateral lung damage was induced in seven anesthetized pigs by saline lavage of the right lungs. The left lung served as an intraindividual control (healthy lung). Unilateral lung damage was confirmed by conventional proton MRI and spiral-CT scanning. The total aerated lung volume was determined both at a positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) of 0 and 10 mbar from three-dimensionally reconstructed (3)H…

Vollautomatische Detektion und Quantifizierung des Lungenemphysems in Dünnschicht-MD-CT des Thorax durch eine neue, speziell entwickelte Software

2004

Purpose: Introduction of a novel software tool (YACTA - yet another CT analyzer) for detection and quantification of pulmonary emphysema in thin-slice chest MDCT data sets. Materials and Methods: Consisting of grey-level threshold-based algorithms (e. g., region-growing), expert rules and morphological image postprocessing YACTA segments the tracheobronchial tree prior to the detection and quantification of pulmonary emphysema. In addition to general parameters, such as the mean lung density (MLD) and the emphysema index (EI - also described as pixel index PI), the previously described bullae index (BI) is transformed into a three-dimensional parameter for a morphological description of emp…

A maChine and deep Learning Approach to predict pulmoNary hyperteNsIon in newbornS with congenital diaphragmatic Hernia (CLANNISH): Protocol for a re…

2021

Introduction Outcome predictions of patients with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) still have some limitations in the prenatal estimate of postnatal pulmonary hypertension (PH). We propose applying Machine Learning (ML), and Deep Learning (DL) approaches to fetuses and newborns with CDH to develop forecasting models in prenatal epoch, based on the integrated analysis of clinical data, to provide neonatal PH as the first outcome and, possibly: favorable response to fetal endoscopic tracheal occlusion (FETO), need for Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), survival to ECMO, and death. Moreover, we plan to produce a (semi)automatic fetus lung segmentation system in Magnetic Resonanc…

Calorimetric and Volumetric Investigations of the Effect of the Hydrophobicity of the Surfactant on the Binding between (Ethylene oxide)13-(propylene…

2004

The enthalpy and the volume of transfer (DeltaY(t)) of the unassociated (ethylene oxide)(13)-(propylene oxide)(30)-(ethylene oxide)(13) (L64) from water to the aqueous sodium alkanoate solutions as functions of the surfactant concentrations (m(S)) were determined at 298 K. The surfactants studied are sodium hexanoate, sodium heptanoate, sodium octanoate, sodium undecanoate, and sodium dodecanoate. As a general feature, for the short alkyl chain surfactants, DeltaY(t) describes an S-shaped curve in the range of m(S) analyzed whereas for the more hydrophobic surfactants the DeltaY(t) vs m(S) trends exhibit maxima which appear at ms values very close to the critical micellar concentration in w…
