London Impressions d’Alice Meynell et William Hyde (1898) : fabrique du livre et connectivité

2021

At a time when print was being challenged by new media that dematerialized information flows, the illustrated book London Impressions reflected an ideal of connectivity. A folio published by Constable in 1898, it gathered essays by Alice Meynell and photogravures and etchings by the English artist William Hyde. This article explores the editorial strategy that provided a record of fin-de-siècle urban modernity and aimed to guarantee the sustainability of the book as medium of inscription and transmission in a changing market. It contextualizes the way Hyde’s images were manufactured and tackles the material and medial notion of connectivity from the perspective of ecocriticism and media arc…

Du mythe au Livre Rouge en passant par la philosophie. Voyage d’une universitaire à travers l’œuvre de Jung

2017

The article retraces the ways a university professor, a teacher of German literature, relates to Jung’s work. An interest in myths and symbols sooner or later leads one to study the powerful writings of this highly cultivated thinker. In 2007, a doctoral dissertation on Jung Kulturphilosoph filled a gap in Jungian studies. It showed the influence of philosophers (from the 17th to early 20th centuries) on Jung’s thinking, comparing it with the ideas of some of his contemporaries. Jung’s solution to the ill ease of the West and of the human psyche is unique in many ways. The translation of the Red Book was an extraordinary adventure, blending the hypnotic whirlpool, artistic discovery, and tra…

Couleur et transparence à l’ère des procédés photomécaniques

2015

This paper aims to show that the reception of British coloured illustrated books in the early twentieth-century reflects the artistic and aesthetic repositioning induced by the development of photomechanical process. Photomechanical reproduction freed the graphic line as well as colour. Reviews published at the turn of the century—as exemplified by The Studio—reveal a tension between opacity and transparency, materiality and lightness, chromophilia and chromophobia. These oppositions apply to the art of the book—as in the books illustrated by Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac—as well as to interior decoration. They are subsumed in the image of the peacock’s ocellus, the eyespot that symbolise…

La Fin de la pauvreté ? Un débat historique

2007

Behavior in case of fever or cough in four districts of Madagascar : eterminants and implications for access to the health

2017

Malaria, tuberculosis and acute respiratory infections constitute a major public health issue in Madagascar, the first two of which are the subject of national control programs largely inspired and financed by international organizations. The diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive methods recommended officially in the conventional health system are standardized and are based on a solid corpus of scientific knowledge. Among other diseases, they are explicitly targeted by the universal sustainable development goals (SDG). To reach them, the United nations recommend the implementation of an universal health coverage (UHC). Madagascar has adopted the SDG and is committed to the implementation o…
