Prevalence and Profile of Mild Cognitive Impairment in Parkinson’s Disease

2011

<i>Background/Aims:</i> The frequency of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in Parkinson’s disease (PD) ranges from 19 to 40%, and this is probably due to methodological differences between the studies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency and profile of MCI in a large sample of nondemented PD subjects and neurologically healthy subjects (NHS). <i>Methods:</i> A total of 872 subjects (582 controls and 290 PD) were included. The association between MCI and PD was tested, using logistic regression models; odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated. <i>Results:</i> Fifty-three percent of PD subjects and 45% NHS met the cr…

Background : To determine the incidence and prevalence of salivary gland tumours in the province of Valparaíso, Chile. Material and Methods : Retrospective review of salivary gland tumours diagnosed between the years 2000 and 2011 from four local pathology services. Information on demographics and histopathology were retrieved from the medical records. Results : The study sample consisted of 279 salivary gland tumours. Prevalence and incidence rates per 100.000 persons were 15.4 and 2.51, respectively. Most of the neoplasms corresponded to benign tumours (70.3%). The most affected gland was the parotid gland. Pleomorphic adenoma was the most common benign tumour (53.8%) and mucoepidermoid c…

Prevalence and Cognitive Impact of Medial Temporal Atrophy in a Hospital Stroke Service: Retrospective Cohort Study

2015

Background Cerebrovascular disease and neurodegeneration cause cognitive impairment and frequently coexist. Aims Our objectives were to investigate the prevalence and cognitive impact of medial temporal lobe atrophy – a radiological marker often associated with Alzheimer's disease – in a hospital stroke service. Methods Retrospective cohort study of patients from a hospital stroke service. Patients assessed for suspected ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack, irrespective of final diagnosis, underwent neuropsychological testing and magnetic resonance imaging. medial temporal lobe atrophy, white matter hyperintensities, lacunes, and cerebral microbleeds were rated using established cr…

Factor V Leiden and prothrombin gene mutation in inflammatory bowel disease in a Mediterranean area.

2001

Abstract Background. Thromboembolism has been reported to be associated with inflammatory bowel disease. Aim. To evaluate the association of factor V Leiden and prothrombin gene mutation with inflammatory bowel disease in a population of patients with thromboembolic events and inflammatory bowel disease and in a control population of patients with inflammatory bowel disease without thromboembolic events. Patients and methods. A series of 18 patients with inflammatory bowel disease and a history of arterial or venous thrombosis and 45 patients with inflammatory bowel disease without thromboembolic events were evaluated for the presence of factor V Leiden and prothrombin gene mutation. Migraine headaches in adolescents: a student population-based study in Monreale.

1995

We assessed the prevalence of migraine headaches in an epidemiological survey of an 11 to 14-year-old student population. Migraine headaches were classified on the basis of questionnaires and neurological examination using the operational diagnostic criteria of the International Headache Society. Prevalence of migraine without aura (IHS code 1.1) was 2.35%; that of migraine with aura (IHS code 1.2) was 0.62%. Migraine without aura was equally distributed among males and females, whereas migraine with aura was preponderant in the female cohort. The prevalence of migraine headaches in males was constant through the ages studied, whereas the prevalence of migraine headaches in females reached…

Aim: The aim of the present study was to identify some factors related to the occurrence of dental trauma in mixed and permanent dentition. Design of the study: Over a period of two months 1325, 6 to 18 year olds from three primary schools in Valencia were examined. Data was collected through clinical examinations and interviews and their Dental trauma was classified according to IADT´s criteria. Results: The prevalence of dental injuries was 6%; boys aged between 12-18 years old experienced more injuries than girls. There was a statistical difference between the types of fractures. Non complicated coronal fractures were the most frequent (9.18%). Games were the main cause of trauma (40%) i…

Prevalence of pressure ulcers in the paediatric population and in primary health care: An epidemiological study conducted in Spain.

2018

Abstract Aim The primary goal of this study was to estimate the prevalence of pressure ulcers in the paediatric population cared for in primary health care. Materials The data of this epidemiological study were extracted from the records of the 24 departments that attended to an approximate population of 1 million inhabitants between 0 and 18 years old from 2012 to 2015. The study included children requiring assistance to reduce pressure ulcer incidence. The paediatric population was categorised into neonates and infants (0–2 years), young child (3–6 years), child (7–12 years) and adolescents (13–18 years). The primary outcome was information on the prevalence of pressure ulcers. Secondary …

Epidemiology of urticaria in German children

2020

Background To date, robust epidemiological metrics as well as data on comorbidity in pediatric urticaria are lacking. They form the basis for the design of efficient healthcare. Methods Retrospective study to analyze epidemiological data in pediatric urticaria. The analysis is based on routine data of a health insurance company operating throughout Germany (DAK-Gesundheit). Insured people under 18 years of age who received at least one confirmed outpatient or inpatient urticaria diagnosis according to the ICD-10 classification in the years 2010 to 2015 were included in the analysis and compared to children without a corresponding diagnosis. Results Of 2.3 million insured individuals, 313,58…

Adjusted population attributable fractions and preventable potential of risk factors for childhood obesity.

2007

AbstractObjectiveA number of individual risk factors for childhood obesity have been identified, but only some of these are amenable to prevention. To assess the amount of cases in a general population attributable to these risk factors, adjusted population-attributable fractions were estimated.DesignCross-sectional study.SettingObligatory school entry examination in 2001/2002 in six Bavarian communities (Germany).Subjects5472 children at age 5–6 years.MeasuresAnthropometric measures were ascertained by public health nurses, and measures concerning sociodemographics, lifestyle and child behaviour such as child's daily meal frequency were obtained with self-administered parental questionnair…
