Latent class identification in wheezing preschool children

2016

Background and aim Since the forced oscillation technique (FOT) has not been used in previous studies on wheezing phenotyping in preschool children, we applied FOT in a large series of outpatients visited at IBIM. Methods We analyzed 256 consecutively enrolled ≤5 years children with doctor diagnosis of wheezing. Latent Class Analysis (LCA) was performed considering the following personal characteristics: type, cause, recurrence in last 12 months, respiratory resistance (Avr_R(8)), atopy, history of eczema, rhinitis and upper airways infections. High resistance is defined as positive residual of regression on sex, age, height and weight. Risk factors were considered meaningful when they yiel…

Oral manifestations of Diabetes Mellitus. A systematic review

2017

Background: Diabetes Mellitus has become a global epidemic and presents many complications, usually proportional to the degree and duration of hyperglycemia. The aim of this systematic review was to investigate the different oral manifestations associated with Diabetes Mellitus. Material and Methods: A MEDLINE search for “Diabetes Mellitus and oral manifestations” was performed. A further search was conducted for “diabetes” and its individual oral manifestation. Inclusion criteria were as follows: human clinical studies with a minimum of 30 patients; studies published in relevant scientific journals between January 1998 and January 2016. Nineteen studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria and…

Prevalence, determinants and spectrum of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) medication of children and adolescents in Germany: results o…

2012

Objective To investigate the prevalence, determinants and spectrum of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) medication and its associations with socioeconomic status (SES), health-related behaviour and living conditions. Design Observational cross-sectional study. Setting Germany. Participants Representative population-based sample of non-institutionalised youth aged between 0 and 17 years (n=17 450) and examined between 2003 and 2006. Main outcome measure Prevalence and spectrum of ADHD medication (Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical (ATC) code N04BA) measured by standardised computer-assisted personal interview (CAPI) on drug use. Results The overall prevalence of ADHD medication (s…

Mobile phone use and exposures in children.

2005

The main difference concerning the use of mobile phones (MPs) between today's children and adults is the longer lifetime exposure of children when they grow older, due to starting to use MPs at an early age. Additionally, recent trends lead to a higher frequency of use among children, including higher popularity of MPs and features specifically designed to attract children. The prevalence of MP users is already very high and reaches >90% among adolescents in some countries. In a German study, 6% of 9-10 years old children used a MP for making calls daily; 35% owned their own MP. For children, MPs are dominant sources of radio wave exposures and relevant sources of extremely low frequency ma…

Hypertension in the metabolic syndrome: Summary of the new position statement of the European Society of Hypertension

2009

Arterial hypertension is often part of a larger constellation of anthropometric and metabolic abnormalities that includes abdominal (or visceral) obesity, characteristic dyslipidemia (low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and high triglycerides), glucose intolerance, insulin resistance and hyperuricemia. Using Adult Treatment Panel III criteria, prevalence is higher than in the general population and the metabolic syndrome (MS) can be found in as many as one third of patients. In hypertensives with MS, a high prevalence of hypertension-induced target organ damage and a negative prognostic value have been described. Dietary advice and life style changes should be strongly recommended and …

2019

Background Congenital Toxoplasmosis (CT) can have severe consequences. France, Austria, and Slovenia have prenatal screening programs whereas some other countries are considering universal screening to reduce congenital transmission and severity of infection in children. The efficiency of such programs is debated increasingly as seroprevalence among pregnant women and incidence of congenital toxoplasmosis show a steady decrease. In addition, uncertainty remains regarding the effectiveness of pre- and postnatal treatments. Method To identify cost-effective strategies, prenatal and neonatal screenings were compared using a decision-analytic model based on French guidelines and current knowled…

Prevalence of hypospadias in Italy according to severity, gestational age and birthweight: an epidemiological study

2009

Abstract Background Hypospadias is a congenital displacement of the urethral meatus in male newborns, being either an isolated defect at birth or a sign of sexual development disorders. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence rate of hypospadias in different Districts of Italy, in order to make a comparison with other countries all over the world. Methods We reviewed all the newborns file records (years 2001–2004) in 15 Italian Hospitals. Results We found an overall hypospadias prevalence rate of 3.066 ± 0.99 per 1000 live births (82.48% mild hypospadias, 17.52% moderate-severe). In newborns Small for Gestational Age (birthweight th percentile) of any gestational age the prevalen…

Stroke in the young in sicily: Prevalence and clinical features

1998

Few epidemiological reports focus on the prevalence of stroke in the young population. As part of a neuroepidemiological survey on the total population of three Sicilian municipalities, we assessed the prevalence of stroke in the young, describing the clinical features of each patient. We screened 14,832 subjects younger than 40 years with a door-to-door method and a two-phase study design. Phase 1 consisted of a questionnaire and a brief neurological examination; phase 2 was an extensive evaluation performed by a neurologist. On the prevalence day (November 1, 1987), we ascertained six cases of stroke (prevalence rate, 40.5/100,000). Three were hemorrhagic, one ischemic, and two of uncerta…

Decoding Emotional Valence from Electroencephalographic Rhythmic Activity

2017

We attempt to decode emotional valence from electroencephalographic rhythmic activity in a naturalistic setting. We employ a data-driven method developed in a previous study, Spectral Linear Discriminant Analysis, to discover the relationships between the classification task and independent neuronal sources, optimally utilizing multiple frequency bands. A detailed investigation of the classifier provides insight into the neuronal sources related with emotional valence, and the individual differences of the subjects in processing emotions. Our findings show: (1) sources whose locations are similar across subjects are consistently involved in emotional responses, with the involvement of parie…

Socio-behavioral factors, oral hygiene level and periodontitis prevalence in a 35-44-year-old Greek adult population: A cross-sectional survey

2021

Background Sub-optimal oral hygiene is considered as a primary risk factor for periodontitis occurrence. Various socio-behavioral determinants may contribute either independently or by influencing adversely the oral hygiene (OH) level. The aim of the present study was to examine the periodontal status of 35-44-year-old Greek adults and determine the contribution of risk indicators, including the socio-behavioral aspects and the population's oral hygiene level, on disease prevalence. Material and methods In 1218 participants, Community Periodontal Index (CPI), Loss of Attachment (LoA) and simplified Oral Hygiene Index (OHI-S) were calculated. Multivariable regression models examined the effe…
