Air pollution exposure during pregnancy and reduced birth size: a prospective birth cohort study in Valencia, Spain

2010

Abstract Background Maternal exposure to air pollution has been related to fetal growth in a number of recent scientific studies. The objective of this study was to assess the association between exposure to air pollution during pregnancy and anthropometric measures at birth in a cohort in Valencia, Spain. Methods Seven hundred and eighty-five pregnant women and their singleton newborns participated in the study. Exposure to ambient nitrogen dioxide (NO2) was estimated by means of land use regression. NO2 spatial estimations were adjusted to correspond to relevant pregnancy periods (whole pregnancy and trimesters) for each woman. Outcome variables were birth weight, length, and head circumf…

Following Hydrogen Cyanide in the Valencian Country (1907-1933): Risk, Accidents and Standards in Fumigation

2019

Abstract Pests had represented a major problem in agriculture for centuries, but the huge changes in the food chain around the late nineteenth century intensified their effects in a totally unprecedented way and many new chemical substances were introduced in the attempt to control them. In this paper I will focus on the implementation of hydrogen cyanide, a highly toxic pesticide which has not received particular consideration from researchers to date. I shall analyse the introduction of this pesticide in the Valencian Country and focus on the attention given to the safety of workers and consumers. I aim to examine the role of the poison in its different uses and analyse the impact of each…

[Adverse reactions to human papillomavirus vaccine in the Valencian Community (2007-2011)].

2014

Introduction: In 2009, two cases of seizures in adolescents following quadrivalent human papillomavirus vaccine (qHPV) administration generated important media attention, and adversely affected public trust in this vaccine. Our objectives were to describe suspected adverse reactions (SARs) reported to the Pharmacovigilance Centre in the Valencian Community (PCVC) after administration of HPV vaccine, and to compare reporting rates of syncope and seizures following this vaccine with those of other vaccines administered to girls aged 13–15 years. Materials and methods: Descriptive study of SARs reported following administration of this vaccine to the PCVC between 2007 and 2011. Results: The cl…

Epidemiology of retinitis pigmentosa in the valencian community (Spain)

1995

The purposes of this study are to determine the frequencies of the different genetic forms of retinitis pigmentosa and to perform segregation analysis in the different genetic subtypes. Retinitis pigmentosa was diagnosed in 263 persons from 132 families. The frequency of the autosomal recessive type was the highest (31.8%) while the X-linked type was very rare (1.5%). The frequency of autosomal dominant type was 14.4% and the simplex cases constituted half of the total cases of RP registered in our community. In conclusion, in our population the high proportion of simplex cases and the low number of X-linked families are noticeable. The result of segregation analysis showed good agreement w…

Inequalities in the participation and outcomes of breast cancer screening programs in Valencia, Spain

2019

Abstract Background Breast cancer remains the most frequent tumour and first cancer related cause of death in the Valencian Community. Despite most of the population being aware of the existence of breast cancer screening programs (BCSP), there are great differences in uptake that are likely attributed to social determinants. The objective of this study, alligning with SDGs 3 and 10, is to assess inequalities in breast cancer screening uptake, diagnosis and treatment delay in the city of Valencia. Methods The population of study included 128 123 women invited to participate in the BCSP in the city of Valencia between 2014 and 2016. Uptake, diagnosis and treatment delay were assessed as outc…

Commissioning and quality assurance procedures for the HDR Valencia skin applicators

2016

The Valencia applicators (Nucletron, an Elekta company, Elekta AB, Stockholm, Sweden) are cup-shaped tungsten applicators with a flattening filter used to collimate the radiation produced by a high-dose-rate (HDR) 192 Ir source, and provide a homogeneous absorbed dose at a given depth. This beam quality provides a good option for the treatment of skin lesions at shallow depth (3-4 mm). The user must perform commissioning and periodic testing of these applicators to guarantee the proper and safe delivery of the intended absorbed dose, as recommended in the standards in radiation oncology. In this study, based on AAPM and GEC-ESTRO guidelines for brachytherapy units and our experience, a set …
