Analysing social networks in rural development: a gender approach

2016

Gender issues are of growing importance in the European and Spanish rural areas. The literature reflects that women have traditionally been linked to marginal positions in economic life, social activities and even political representation at the local level. Local development programs that have been implemented in Europe’s rural areas have had among its objectives the improvement of the articulation of local communities. To reach them, it has been fostered, among others, a gender perspective, promoting both productive activities led by women and their participation as stakeholders in the management and decision-making structures of such programmes. In this paper, we addressed this latter is…

Festive literature in Catalan as a space of cultural resistance: The Valencian magazine Pensat i Fet (1912‐72) during the Spanish post-war period

2021

The magazine Pensat i Fet (1912‐72), which was published every year before the Fallas festival and included a wide range of texts and pictures related to it, had been an important element in the dissemination of literature and culture in Catalan and the agenda of valencianism among wide sectors of Valencian society. Until 1936 ‐ especially during the years of the Second Spanish Republic ‐ the magazine explicitly opted for valencianism, for example, advocating for the agreement that would make the statute of autonomy possible. However, from 1940 onwards it became a true bastion of cultural resistance. So, the magazine maintained a literary use of Catalan language in diverse registers, strong…

The satirical press and the struggle for cultural hegemony in Spain: a case study on <em>La Traca</em>, 1884-1938

2019

La Traca was a weekly magazine published in Valencia between 1884 and 1892 and between 1909 and 1938, with periods during which it was not published because of governmental censorship. Because it was written in Valencian, the vernacular language of where it was published, it did not go beyond being a magazine of local, or at most regional, interest, circulation and importance. However, its editor, Vicente Miguel Carceller, made the decision in 1931 to edit the magazine in Spanish and he thus conquered the country’s market, resulting in circulation figures that no other publication had ever reached. La Traca was the most loved and hated of all satirical publications. This article explores it…

Valencia’s ‘Men for Equality’ movement. An assessment of some of its protagonists

2019

The Men for Equality movement [El movimiento de hombres por la igualdad - HPLI], although a fairly recent phenomenon, already has a forty year track record in Valencia. The movement has had its high and low points. After the trail blazed by protagonists in Valencian society, a period of consolidation followed in which those who came after them kept the movement going. A qualitative study carried out by the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology records the impressions of those men who kept the movement alive between 1975 and 2018 despite the odds at the outset. These voices are analysed within frameworks for interpreting movements. As a social movement, Men for Equality developed n…

The use made of video in the social media by candidates in the 2019 Valencian Autonomous Government elections

2020

Videos are increasingly being used in social networks for a wide range of purposes, including political campaigning. Here, social media seem to be gaining an edge over the mainstream variety when it comes to making political choices, especially during election campaigns. This paper examines the extent to which social media is used in Valencian Autonomous Government elections and looks at each of the candidate's experiences in this regard in the April 2019 elections. We pay particular attention to the differences between the three networks analysed — Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and consider what kind of video information is shared. For these purposes, we create nine formal categories, s…

Un asesinato en la Valldigna (Valencia, 1492)

2005

In 1492, a fatal robbery was committed in a small village in the Kingdom of Valencia. This article analyses the statements of the witnesses to a confession of this crime that were recorded in an Arabic document. The document provides evidence for the application of sharī'a law among Muslims in a territory that was no longer part of an Islamic state - in this case, the meting out of punishments for blood crimes. The survival of the document as part of the case file of the Christian court that adjudicated the case shows that the Valencian justice system considered valid documents produced by a Muslim judge, by a court clerk or by a notary. Moreover, these decisions were provided in Arabic wit…

De la aljama a la corte: aproximación biográfica del médico converso valenciano Pere Pintor (<em>ca</em>. 1423-1508)

2019

This paper deals with the biography of the doctor from Valencia Pere Pintor, a member of a family of Valencian Jewish conversos. He was a doctor who, after training at the Estudi General in Lleida, worked for nearly thirty years in the city of Valencia, in the service of the municipal council, numerous noblemen, and the royal household. As a doctor, he became very successful and well known, and he amassed great wealth in parallel to his social advancement. All this was placed in jeopardy with the establishment, in 1481, of the court of the Holy Inquisition in the kingdom of Valencia, which fiercely attacked and repressed Pintor and his family. As a result of this he left Valencia and moved …

An Almost Unknown Literature: Catalan Language Writers in Valencia's Kingdom in the Early Modern Age (1500-1800)

2009

This essay provides an overview of literary production in Catalan in the Kingdom of Valencia during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, an extensive period of time that has been described as "decadent" on account of the pressure of Castilian and the relative neglect by Valencians of their own language in favor of that of the Hispanic monarchy. However, recent research has revealed the survival of autochthonous literature, which, up until now, has been little-studied.
