This volume presents the long history of Syria through a jouney of the most important and recently-excavated archaeological sites. The sites cover over 1.8 million years and all regions in Syria; 110 academics have contributed information on 103 excavations for this volume. Based on these contributions the volume offers a detailed summary of the history of Syria, a history as important as any in terms of the development of human society. It is hoped that this knowledge will offer not only an increased understanding of the country but also act as a deterrent to the destruction of Syrian cultural heritage and facilitate the protection of Syrian sites.

25 pages; International audience; In the eastern part of the Moroccan Anti-Atlas Mountains, the Alnif area exposes a buried Ordovician glacial tunnel valley (5 km wide, 180 m deep) cut into preglacial marine sediments. The preglacial sedimentary sequence, deposited in a marine environment, is characterized by a typical "layer-cake" configuration of permeable (sand) and impermeable (clays and early-cemented sandstones) layers. At the base of the tunnel valley, a discontinuous and fan-shaped glacial conglomeratic unit 10 to 15 m thick occurs, erosively deposited over preglacial marine sediments. Tell Shiyukh Tahtani. New light on the Bronze Age sequence

This report briefly describes the latest results of the Italian rescue excavations at Shiyukh Tahtani on the Upper Syrian Euphrates. Fieldwork continued on the eastern slope of the mound, aiming to further investigate the Bronze Age levels. A main operation, halfway down the slope, focused upon the earliest MB I layers, where a group of burials was unearthed, mostly consisting of adult interments in oval pits and child pot burials. A most striking finding was the ‘Spinstress tomb’. At the foot of the slope, the exploration of a mud-brick compound, dating back to the early third millennium BC, continued. Geochemical comparison of natural and anthropogenic metal fluxes in extreme environments: Mt. Etna volcano (Italy) and Šalek Valley (Slovenia)

Geochemical comparison between some metals (As, Cd, Cu, Pb, Se, V, Zn) emissions from an active volcano (Mt. Etna) and a highly industrialized area (Šalek Valley) showed some interesting similarities: in general, most of the elements emitted into the atmosphere do not return to the Earth’s surface and are therefore dispersed into the environment. Exceptions for Šalek Valley are Cd, which probably derives in large part from rock leaching, and in part As and Pb, which fall mostly as ash. Also, Etna’s emissions are richer in Cd and Cu, whereas industrial emissions at Šalek Valley are richer in V and Zn. All other metals have similar fluxes in the two types of emissions.
Subglacial to proglacial depositional environments in an Ordovician glacial tunnel valley, Alnif, Morocco

Abstract This paper presents the sedimentary analysis of an exceptional Ordovician glacial tunnel valley in the eastern part of the Anti-Atlas. The valley infill comprises two major glacial erosion surfaces (striated pavements) each overlain by a fining-upward glacial unit. These units are composed of five distinct facies associations, recording the evolution from subglacial to proglacial environments, and an additional sixth facies association, overtopping the tunnel valley infill, and associated with post-glacial environments. Small architectures can help to reinstate a daily use of the archaeological park, no longer considered as a specialised fence. The projects feed on iconographic memories that indicate where and how to look at. The comparison between the historical views and the current state shows some changes. Today the contemporary city surrounds the temples, arising among billboards, behind traffic lights. Unlike the postcards' logic where the ruins appear isolated, in the wake of a generic polemic against the recent transformations, the article aims to focus on a new aesthetic where contemporary architecture narrates a dialogue between different parts, offering new paths of approach to the ruins.
