Magnesium Responsiveness to Insulin and Insulin-Like Growth Factor I in Erythrocytes from Normotensive and Hypertensive Subjects

1998

Depletion of intracellular free magnesium (Mg(i)) is a characteristic feature of insulin resistance in essential hypertension, but it is not clear to what extent low Mg(i) levels contribute to insulin resistance, result from it, or both. As insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) may improve insulin resistance, we investigated whether this peptide could similarly improve Mg(i) responsiveness to insulin in hypertension, and whether this effect was related to any direct IGF-I effect on Mg(i). 31P-Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy was used to measure Mg(i) in erythrocytes from 13 fasting normotensive and 10 essential hypertensive subjects before and 30, 60, and 120 min after incubation with…

Insulin-like growth factor 1 and sodium-lithium countertransport in essential hypertension and in hypertensive left ventricular hypertrophy

1993

The aim of this work was to study the insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1), a substance able to promote cell proliferation in vascular smooth muscle, in patients with mild-to-moderate hypertension and to analyse its relationship to sodium-lithium countertransport, a genetic marker of hypertension that is related to cardiovascular complications. We studied 32 hypertensive subjects, some with left ventricular hypertrophy, and 14 healthy subjects. Fasting plasma IGF1 was measured by means of a radioimmunoassay after octadecylsilica chromatography and Na(+)-Li+ countertransport was determined by the method of Canessa.Hypertensive patients had higher values of both IGF1 and Na(+)-Li+ countertransp…

Comparison of Foot and Hand Reaction Times among Men: A Methodologic Study Using Simple and Multiple-Choice Repeated Measurements

1995

The primary study goal was to compare visual simple and choice reaction times of the hand and foot to assess validity of measurements for evaluating subjects' ability to perform rapid, controlled movements. First, we examined the repeatability ( N = 34) for four different data-sampling methods from a series of 12 trials within sessions and between two test sessions. Simple and choice reaction times with the preferred hand and both feet were then compared among 153 healthy male volunteers aged 35 to 67 years. Pearson correlations for hand and ipsilateral and contralateral foot reaction times on simple and choice tasks (.53 to .80, p<.001) showed that psychomotor foot reaction time is a v…

Screening for generalized anxiety disorder in Spanish primary care centers with the GAD-7.

2017

The aim of the study was to determine the criterion validity of a computerized version of the General Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) questionnaire to detect general anxiety disorder in Spanish primary care centers. A total of 178 patients completed the GAD-7 and were administered the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders, which was used as a reference standard. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, and positive and negative likelihood ratios were calculated. A cut-off of 10 yielded a sensitivity of .87, a specificity of .78, a positive predictive value of .93, a negative predictive value of .64, a positive likelihood ratio o…

Augmented glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity and normal penetration and metabolism of dehydroepiandrosterone in mononuclear leukocytes in pso…

1986

The aim of the study was to determine a biochemical basis for the augmented oxidative metabolism found in mononuclear leukocytes (MNL) of patients with active psoriasis. Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is known to inhibit glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PDH). We determined the activity of G-6-PDH as well as the penetration and metabolism of DHEA - diminished plasma concentrations of which have been found in psoriatics previously - in 16 patients with active psoriasis and 16 controls. MNL in patients with psoriasis possessed 52% more (p less than 0.05) G-6-PDH activity, based on cell number, and 34% more (p less than 0.05) activity, based on soluble protein. No difference in DHEA penetr…

Distribution and categorization of left ventricular measurements in the general population: results from the population-based Gutenberg Heart Study.

2010

Background— Echocardiography, the dominant imaging modality for quantification of left ventricular metrics, has undergone continuing development in the past few decades. However, given the lack of population-based data, current guidelines are still based on restricted and small data sets analyzed with methods including expert opinion. This work presents empirically derived reference values from a large-scale, epidemiologic study conducted with state-of-the-art imaging technology and methods. Methods and Results— The distribution of echocardiographic measurements of the left ventricle was analyzed in a population-based sample of 5000 mid-Europeans from the Gutenberg Heart Study in Germany. …

Alterations in androgen conjugate levels in women and men with alopecia.

1994

Objective To assess levels of androgen metabolites thought to reflect, at least in part, peripheral androgen activity in women with androgenic alopecia and men with premature balding in an effort to determine if a common abnormality exists. Design Prospective study in various groups of women and men. Setting Reproductive Endocrine Clinic at our university medical center. Patients Ten normal ovulatory female controls and 50 hyperandrogenic women divided on the basis of hirsutism and alopecia as follows: [1] 8 hirsute women with androgenic alopecia; [2] 12 nonhirsute women with androgenic alopecia; [3] 18 hirsute women without androgenic alopecia; and [4] 12 nonhirsute women without androgeni…

Hormonal Responses of Multiset Versus Single-Set Heavy-Resistance Exercise Protocols

1997

The purpose of this study was to compare serum growth hormone (GH), testosterone (T), cortisol (C) and whole blood lactate (L) responses to single set (1S) versus multiple set (3S) heavy-resistance exercise protocols. Eight recreationally weight-trained men completed two identical resistance exercise workouts (1S vs. 3S). Blood was obtained prexcerise (PRE), immediately postexercise (0P), and 5 min (5P), 15 min (15P), 30 min and 60 min (60P) postexercise and was analyzed for GH, T, C, and L levels. For 1S and 3S, GH, L, and T significantly increased from PRE to 0P and remained significantly elevated to 60P, except for 1S. For GH, T, and L, 3S showed significantly greater increases compared…

Technical note: a comparison of central and peripheral intraocular pressure using rebound tonometry

2007

Purpose: To compare central and peripheral intraocular pressure (IOP) readings obtained with rebound tonometry. Methods: Intraocular pressure was measured on the right eye of 153 patients (65 males, 88 females), aged from 21 to 85 years (mean +/- S.D., 55.5 +/- 15.2 years) with the ICare rebound tonometer at centre, and 2 mm from the limbus (in the nasal and temporal regions along the 0-180O corneal meridian). Results: Intraocular pressure values obtained with the ICare were 14.9 +/- 2.8; 14.1 +/- 2.5 and 14.5 +/- 2.7 mmHg at centre, nasal and temporal corneal locations, respectively. On average, nasal and temporal IOP readings were 0.75 and 0.37 mmHg lower than the central reading (p 0.05, r…

Normal reference values of multilayer longitudinal strain according to age decades in a healthy population: A single-centre experience.

2017

Aims Recent advancements in echocardiographic technology allow to analyse myocardial strain in multiple layers. Little is known about the impact of age on layer-specific longitudinal strain in healthy subjects. The aim of this study was to analyse the influence of age on multilayer longitudinal strain and establish normal reference values of layer-specific strain according to age decades in a healthy population referring to our echo laboratory using 2D speckle-tracking echocardiography with layer-specific software. Methods and results Two-hundred sixty-six healthy, consecutive subjects (mean age = 39.2 ± 17.5 years, women/men = 137/129), free of cardiovascular risk factors, were enrolled. S…
