Regulation of glutathione metabolism in Ehrlich ascites tumour cells.

1992

Glutathione metabolism was studied in cancer cells during the growth of an Ehrlich ascites tumour. GSH, but not GSSG, content decreases when cell proliferation and the rate of protein synthesis in the tumour decrease. This change correlates with a decrease in the rate of GSH synthesis and an increase in glutathione peroxidase and glutathione S-transferase activities. Glutathione efflux from tumour cells seems to co-ordinate with the rate of GSH synthesis. Cysteine, and not methionine, promotes GSH synthesis in tumour cells. However, changes in the rate of GSH synthesis are not due to limitations in the supply of blood cysteine or to changes in the intracellular amino acid pool of the cancer…

Evaluation of Esophageal Motility Using Multichannel Intraluminal Impedance in Healthy Children and With Gastroesophageal Reflux

2010

Abstract OBJECTIVE: : Multichannel intraluminal impedance (MII) directly evaluates esophageal bolus transport. There is a good correlation between MII and manometry in healthy adults, but there are no reports concerning children. The aim of the present study was to determine normal values of esophageal motility using only impedance measurements in healthy children and in a pediatric population with gastroesophageal reflux (GER). PATIENTS AND METHODS: : We described in the present study 60 children submitted to pH-MII for 24 hours for suspected GER. Patients were divided into 2 different groups on the basis of their pH-MII report. Group 1 patients showed acid GER, whereas group 2 patients had…

Refined Analysis of the Critical Age Ranges of Childhood Overweight: Implications for Primary Prevention

2012

Prevention-interventions would certainly benefit from a precise knowledge of the age range when the most pronounced increases in prevalence of overweight and obesity occur in the general population. Data of 15,662 subjects aged 2-18 years were obtained from a national representative health survey (German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Children and Adolescents (KiGGS)) conducted in Germany. Weight, height, and BMI z-scores were calculated relative to the UK 1990 reference, and prevalence of overweight and obesity was defined according to the IOTF (International Obesity Task Force) age- and sex-specific cut-offs. Univariate ANOVAs for overweight, obesity, weight, height, and BMI …

Language problems in children with learning disabilities: do they interfere with maternal communication?

2004

In this study, parent-child interaction in two carefully matched subgroups—school—age boys with learning disabilities (LD) who showed a discrepancy between their verbal IQ and performance IQ and had more extensive difficulties in higher-level language abilities (VIQ < PIQ, n = 8) and boys with LD who did not manifest a discrepancy between verbal IQ and performance IQ (VIQ = PIQ, n = 8), were investigated. The effects of the child's language problems on child task performance and on the quality of maternal communication were analyzed in a mother-child problem solving task. Children in the VIQ < PIQ group were found to be less successful on the task than children in the VIQ = PIQ group…

Victimisation and life satisfaction of gay and bisexual individuals in 44 European countries: the moderating role of country-level and person-level a…

2018

We examined the link between victimisation and life satisfaction for 85,301 gay and bisexual individuals across 44 European countries. We expected this negative link to be stronger when the internalised homonegativity of the victim was high (e.g. because the victim is more vulnerable) and weaker when victimisation occurs in countries that express intolerance towards homosexuality (e.g. because in such contexts victims expect victimisation more and they attribute it to their external environment). Additionally, we expected internalised homonegativity to relate negatively to life satisfaction. Multilevel analyses revealed that victimisation (i.e. verbal insults, threats of violence, minor or …

Determinants of Cardiometabolic Risk Factors in the First Decade of Life

2017

The present prospective study assessed the association of birth weight (BW) and growth pattern on cardiometabolic risk factors in a cohort followed from birth to 10 years of age. One hundred and forty-five subjects (73 girls) who fulfilled the inclusion criteria and had all their data recorded at birth and at 5 years were enrolled. Of these, 100 (52 girls) also recorded data at 10 years. Anthropometric measurements, office and 24-hour blood pressure, and metabolic parameters were obtained. At 5 years, both BW and current weight were determinants of blood pressure and metabolic parameters; however, as the subjects got older, the impact of body size increased. Higher BW and maternal obesity i…

Evaluation of an automated chromogenic substrate assay for the rapid determination of hirudin in plasma.

1995

Abstract A fully mechanized chromogenic substrate assay method for the rapid and specific determination of recombinant hirudin (r-hirudin) in citrated plasma on clinical chemistry analyzers (Hitachi 911 and Cobas Mira) is described. In a first step, 12 μl sample volume is mixed with the chromogenic substrate. Due to the almost immediate action of hirudin the inhibitory reaction and the cleavage of the substrate is started simultaneously when bovine thrombin is added in excess. This excludes interferences by antithrombin III or heparin cofactor II. The change in absorbance/min is recorded at 405 nm. The measuring range is about 0.2 – 4.0 mg/l r-hirudin on both analyzers. Precision is charact…

Perceived stress and reference ranges of hair cortisol in healthy adolescents

2019

BackgroundChronic stress during adolescence has usually been evaluated through subjective measures, leaving aside objective measures such as hair cortisol concentrations. Therefore, the aim of this study was to provide reference ranges for hair cortisol concentrations by sex and age and to study the relationship between subjective and objective measures of stress and temporal stability.MethodsThe participants were 170 adolescents aged between 12 and 14 years (mean = 12.78 years; standard deviation = 0.71 years; 52.40% girls) who completed the Perceived Stress Scale 4 and had their hair sampled.ResultsThe results revealed hair cortisol concentrations ranging from 0.07 pg/mg to 9.54 pg/mg. Immunocytochemistry of M-cadherin in mature and regenerating rat muscle

1994

Background: Cadherins are transmembrane proteins mediating calcium-dependent cell–cell adhesion in a cell type-specific manner by means of homophilic binding. M(muscle)-cadherin is a recently detected member of the cadherin family. Methods: We have investigated the localization of M-cadherin innormal and aneurally regenerating skeletal muscle of rat by means of pre-embedding immunocytochemistry. The antibody was directed against the extra-cellular domain of M-cadherin. Results: Myoblasts and myotubes in regenerating muscles tended to be arranged in clusters enclosed by a common basal lamina. Satellite cells of mature muscle fibers were attached to the underlying fiber without separating bas…

Age as a Confounding Factor for the Accurate Non-Invasive Diagnosis of Advanced NAFLD Fibrosis

2017

OBJECTIVES Non-invasive fibrosis scores are widely used to identify/exclude advanced fibrosis in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, these scores were principally developed and validated in patients aged between 35 and 65 years of age. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of age on the performance of non-invasive fibrosis tests in NAFLD. METHODS Patients were recruited from European specialist hepatology clinics. The cohort was divided into five age-based groups: ≤35 (n=74), 36-45 (n=96), 46-55 (n=197), 56-64 (n=191), and ≥65 years (n=76), and the performance of the aspartate aminotransferase (AST)/alanine transaminase (ALT) ratio, fibrosis 4 (F…
