Transduction of redox Gibbs free energy into modulated electrochemical work

Abstract This work supplies an electrochemical model in order to account for some oscillatory phenomena. The model can be applied both to living bodies and to electrochemical cells. We suppose that one of the products of an electrochemical reaction in solution has a high vapour pressure and study the influence of its mass transfers on its oscillations and on that of the current,induced by the former ones. Energy performance evaluation of a demo solar desiccant cooling system with heat recovery for the regeneration of the adsorption material

Abstract Since July 2008, a Solar Desiccant Evaporative Cooling (DEC) system has been operating as a test plant at the solar laboratory of the Dipartimento di Energia (ex DREAM) of the University of Palermo. The system is composed of an air handling unit (AHU) designed for ventilation of the laboratory coupled with a radiant ceiling that provides most of the required sensible cooling/heating energy. Dependence of solvent quality on the composition of copolymers: experiment and theory for solutions of P(MMA-ran-t-BMA) in toluene and in chloroform.

The interaction of toluene with P(MMA-ran-t-BMA) and with the corresponding homopolymers was determined via vapor pressure measurements at 30, 50 and 70 °C. A unified thermodynamic approach served for the modeling of the results. It is capable of describing the behavior of the different solutions by means of two adjustable parameters, one representing the effective number of solvent segments and the other accounting for the interactions between the components. Pullulan and dextran: uncommon composition dependent Flory-Huggins interaction parameters of their aqueous solutions.

Vapor pressure measurements were performed for aqueous solutions of pullulan ( M w 280 kg/mol) and dextran ( M w 60 and 2100 kg/mol, respectively) at 25, 37.5, and 50 degrees C. The Flory-Huggins interaction parameters obtained from these measurements, plus information on dilute solutions taken from the literature, show that water is a better solvent for pullulan than for dextran. Furthermore, they evince uncommon composition dependencies, including the concurrent appearance of two extrema, a minimum at moderate polymer concentration and a maximum at high polymer concentration. Electrothermal Atomic Absorption Spectrometric Diagnosis of Familial Hypercholesterolemia

We have developed a new nonradioactive assay to identify human low-density lipoprotein receptor defects. It is based on the incubation of cultured cells with colloidal gold-LDL conjugates and quantitation of the gold associated with the cells by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry. After an oxidative treatment with nitric and hydrochloric acids, the biological matrix interferes neither with the gold recovery nor with the gold measurements, which are linear, at least from 0.15 to 3 ng of gold. Supercritical fluid extraction of pesticides

The extraction behaviour of 10 μg samples of five pesticides and some related compounds from glass wool with supercritical CO2 has been investigated under several conditions (10 MPa, 20 MPa extraction pressure, 313 K, dry and water saturated CO2). The extraction fluid was decompressed over a line of little columns, filled with 3μ Si60 or RP18, and the amount of deposited material was analyzed by HPLC for each of these columns. Isotope-dilution ICP-MS for trace element determination and speciation: from a reference method to a routine method?

This critical review discusses the conditions under which inductively coupled plasma-isotope dilution mass spectrometry (ICP-IDMS) is suitable as a routine method for trace element and element-speciation analysis. It can, in general, be concluded that ICP-IDMS has high potential for routine analysis of trace elements if the accuracy of results is of predominant analytical importance. Hyphenated techniques with ICP-IDMS suffer both from lack of commercially available isotope-labeled spike compounds for species-specific isotope dilution and from the more complicated system set-up required for species-unspecific ICP-IDMS analysis. Moisture transfers inside food products could be controlled or limited by the use of edible films. These are usually based on hydrophobic substances such as lipids to improve barrier efficiency. Liquid/Gas and Liquid/Liquid Phase Behavior of n-Butane/1,4-Polybutadiene versus n-Butane/1,2-Polybutadiene

Solutions of 1,4-polybutadiene (1,4-PB, 98% cis) and of 1,2-polybutadiene (1,2-PB) in n-butane (n-C 4 ) were studied with respect to their vapor pressure and to their demixing into two liquid phases under isochoric conditions within the temperature range from 25 to 75 °C. 1,2-PB mixes homogeneously with n-C 4 at any ratio, in contrast to 1,4-PB, which exhibits a miscibility gap extending from practically pure solvent to approximately 40 wt % polymer. Solubility of some pesticides in supercritical CO2

The solubility limits of some pesticides (Linuron, Methoxychlor, Diclofopmethyl, Diclofop and 2,4-D) and of 3,4-dichloroaniline have been determined in supercritical CO2 at 200 bar and 40° C, using the Milton Roy sample preparation accessory SPATM. Depending on the polarity and vapour pressure of the investigated compounds, the solubility was found to be between 0.3 and 12 gl−1.
