Applying the Anna Karenina principle for wild animal gut microbiota : temporal stability of the bank vole gut microbiota in a disturbed environment
2020
Gut microbiota play an important role in host health. Yet, the drivers and patterns of microbiota imbalance (dysbiosis) in wild animals remain largely unexplored. One hypothesised outcome of stress on animal microbiomes is a destabilised microbial community that is characterised by an increase in inter-individual differences compared with microbiomes of healthy animals, which are expected to be (i) temporally stable and (ii) relatively similar among individuals. This set of predictions for response of microbiomes to stressors is known as the Anna Karenina principle (AKP) for animal microbiomes. We examine the AKP in a wild mammal inhabiting disturbed environments by conducting a capture-mar…
Migrating from a Centralized Data Warehouse to a Decentralized Data Platform Architecture
2021
To an increasing degree, data is a driving force for digitization, and hence also a key asset for numerous companies. In many businesses, various sources of data exist, which are isolated from one another in different domains, across a heterogeneous application landscape. Well-known centralized solution technologies, such as data warehouses and data lakes, exist to integrate data into one system, but they do not always scale well. Therefore, robust and decentralized ways to manage data can provide the companies with better value give companies a competitive edge over a single central repository. In this paper, we address why and when a monolithic data storage should be decentralized for imp…
Tapaustutkimus näkökulmien yhteensovittamisesta Korholankoskien kunnostuksessa
2017
Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on tarkastella yhteishallinnan (co-management) periaatteiden toteutumista Hankasalmen ja Konneveden kuntien alueella sijaitsevien Korholankoskien kunnostusprojektissa, joka toteutettiin vuosien 2009-2011 aikana. Tapaustutkimuksen muodossa toteutetussa tutkimuksessa on tarkasteltu Korholankoskien alueella vaikuttavien paikallistason käyttäjäryhmien edustajien Korholankoskiin liittämiä näkökulmia ja sitä, kuinka heidän näkökulmat on otettu huomioon kunnostuksen toteuttamisessa. Tutkimuksen näkökulma mahdollistaa kunnostuksien legitimiteettitason tarkastelun välittömästi koskiin yhteydessä olevien toimijoiden tasolla. Tutkimuksen aineiston muodostaa haastattelua…
Participation for just governance of food-system transition
2022
Sustainability transitions governance needs to be inclusive and participatory and the question of justice is crucial for making effective and acceptable changes possible. But how do we ensure adequate participation in governance processes and enable reconciliation between competing goals in relation to sustainability transitions? Transition management highlights the need for participatory and reflexive governance processes to enable sustainability transitions. However, due to participant selection and limitations in chosen approaches, deliberative and participatory forums may have difficulties ensuring justice and legitimacy. A systemic and practice-oriented perspective on deliberation poin…
The impact of wildlife and environmental factors on hantavirus infection in the host and its translation into human risk
2023
Identifying factors that drive infection dynamics in reservoir host populations is essential in understanding human risk from wildlife-originated zoonoses. We studied zoonotic Puumala orthohantavirus (PUUV) in the host, the bank vole ( Myodes glareolus ), populations in relation to the host population, rodent and predator community and environment-related factors and whether these processes are translated into human infection incidence. We used 5-year rodent trapping and bank vole PUUV serology data collected from 30 sites located in 24 municipalities in Finland. We found that PUUV seroprevalence in the host was negatively associated with the abundance of red foxes, but this process did no…

Sotavuosien opettaja elokuvan silmin : opettajakuvaus elokuvassa Varaventtiili
2010
Water-use efficiency and transpiration across European forests during the Anthropocene
2015
Considering the combined effects of CO2 fertilization and climate change drivers on plant physiology leads to a modest increase in simulated European forest transpiration in spite of the effects of CO2-induced stomatal closure. The Earth’s carbon and hydrologic cycles are intimately coupled by gas exchange through plant stomata1,2,3. However, uncertainties in the magnitude4,5,6 and consequences7,8 of the physiological responses9,10 of plants to elevated CO2 in natural environments hinders modelling of terrestrial water cycling and carbon storage11. Here we use annually resolved long-term δ13C tree-ring measurements across a European forest network to reconstruct the physiologically driven r…
Use of nanostructures as oxygen carriers in chemical looping combustion
2013
The usage of fossils fuels has increased carbon dioxide emissions, and the carbon dioxide is responsible for global warming and sea level rising. One of the most promising ways of carbon capturing from the power plants is chemical looping combustion (CLC). CLC is based on the alternating oxidation and reduction reactions on the air and fuel reactors. Oxygen and energy needed for combustion between the reactors is transferred by an oxygen carrier. Oxygen carrier is usually made of metal or metal oxide. One big hindrance towards commercial use of CLC is slow reaction kinetics of oxygen carriers. One possible solution for the problem is to replace the conventional carriers by nanoscale oxygen …
Influence of a Cu–zirconia interface structure on CO2 adsorption and activation
2021
CO2 adsorption and activation on a catalyst are key elementary steps for CO2 conversion to various valuable products. In the present computational study, we screened different Cu–ZrO2 interface structures and analyzed the influence of the interface structure on CO2 binding strength using density functional theory calculations. Our results demonstrate that a Cu nanorod favors one position on both tetragonal and monoclinic ZrO2 surfaces, where the bottom Cu atoms are placed close to the lattice oxygens. In agreement with previous calculations, we find that CO2 prefers a bent bidentate configuration at the Cu–ZrO2 interface and the molecule is clearly activated being negatively charged. Strain…
