Comparison of vaccine strains and the virus causing the 1986 foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in Spain: epizootiological analysis

1990

RNAs of the most recent foot-and-mouth disease virus isolated in Spain (A5Sp86) during the 1986 outbreak, and of the three vaccine strains in use at that time in that country, have been compared. Although these viruses are serologically indistinguishable, differences have been found among them by T1 fingerprinting. This genetic heterogeneity affects the immunogenic VP1 gene, with amino acid changes located at the carboxyterminal end of the molecule. VP1-coding sequences obtained have been compared with those previously reported for European A5 FMDVs and it has been possible to trace their phylogenetic origin. The most parsimonious evolutionary tree obtained shows that the viruses analyzed a…

Identification of Risk Loci for Radiotoxicity in Prostate Cancer by Comprehensive Genotyping of

2021

Simple Summary Genetic variability in transforming growth factor beta pathway (TGFB) has been reported to affect adverse events in radiotherapy. We investigated 40 germline polymorphisms in peripheral blood cells, covering the entire common genetic variability in the TGFβ1 ligand (gene TGFB1) and the TGFβ receptor-1 (TGFBR1) in 240 patients treated with primary radiotherapy for prostate cancer. Human lymphoblastoid cell lines (LCLs) were used to assess whether TGFB1 and TGFBR1 polymorphisms impact DNA repair capacity following single irradiation with 3 Gy. Upon adjustment for multiplicity testing, for one polymorphism (rs10512263 in TGFBR1, C-variant allele, n = 35), a statistically signifi…

Spatial throughfall heterogeneity in a montane rain forest in Ecuador: Extent, temporal stability and drivers

2009

Summary The drivers of spatial throughfall heterogeneity are still not fully understood. At an undisturbed forest site in the Ecuadorian Andes with ca. 2600 mm of annual rainfall we determined the accuracy of throughfall measurements by comparing Hellmann-type funnel gauges with troughs. At the same undisturbed and a managed, selectively-logged forest site we determined spatial variability of throughfall, temporal stability of spatial variability and the controls of spatial throughfall variability using a 4-year dataset in weekly resolution. There were no systematic differences between the collected volumes of funnel gauges and troughs. Based on the statistical distribution of annual throug…

Prototyping of Land-SAF leaf area index algorithm with VEGETATION and MODIS data over Europe

2009

Abstract The Satellite Application Facility on Land Surface Analysis (Land-SAF) aims to provide land surface variables for the meteorological and environmental science communities from EUMETSAT satellites. This study assesses the performance of a simplified (i.e. random distribution of vegetation is assumed) version of the Land-SAF algorithm for the estimation of Leaf Area Index (LAI) when prototyped with VEGETATION (processed in CYCLOPES program) and MODIS reflectances. The prototype estimates of LAI are evaluated both by comparison with validated CYCLOPES and MODIS LAI products derived from the same sensors and directly through comparison with ground-based estimates. Emphasis is given on …

Ability of short-time Fourier transform method to detect transient changes in vagal effects on hearts: a pharmacological blocking study.

2006

Conventional spectral analyses of heart rate variability (HRV) have been limited to stationary signals and have not allowed the obtainment of information during transient autonomic cardiac responses. In the present study, we evaluated the ability of the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) method to detect transient changes in vagal effects on the heart. We derived high-frequency power (HFP, 0.20–0.40 Hz) as a function of time during active orthostatic task (AOT) from the sitting to standing posture before and after selective vagal (atropine sulfate 0.04 mg/kg) and sympathetic (metoprolol 0.20 mg/kg) blockades. The HFP minimum point during the first 30 s after standing up was calculated and…

Algunas reflexiones acerca de la stjue de 9 de julio de 2020 sobre los pactos novatorios en materia de cláusulas suelo

2021

The Sentence of the Court of Justice of the European Union of July 9, 2020 comes to answer the five questions that, in its preliminary question, the Court of First Instance and Instruction No. 3 of Teruel asks about the validity of the new agreements in the context of the floor clauses, establishing jurisprudential doctrine on this matter about which our Supreme Court had previously ruled in its Judgments of October 16, 2017, in the sense of considering the agreed floor clause null as a consequence of the novation agreement and, subsequently, those of April 11, 2018 and September 13, 2018 in the opposite direction, declaring that the novation agreement was valid. It is a long-awaited and in…

Assessing complexity and causality in heart period variability through a model-free data-driven multivariate approach

2017

The aim of this study is to emphasize the importance of model-free data-driven mul- tivariate approaches in describing HP variability and cardiovascular control mechanisms responsible for inducing HP changes via modifications of different cardiovascular vari- ables such as SAP and RESP. The goal was achieved through the application, a previously proposed model-free data-driven multivariate framework devised to assess complexity and causality over a multivariate set composed by several, simultaneously recorded, car- diovascular variability series (Porta et al., 2014). The approach was applied to assess the complexity of the cardiac control, through the evaluation of the amount of irregularit…

The effects of lasers on bond strength to ceramic materials: A systematic review and meta-analysis

2018

Lasers have recently been introduced as an alternative means of conditioning dental ceramic surfaces in order to enhance their adhesive strength to cements and other materials. The present systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to review and quantitatively analyze the available literature in order to determine which bond protocols and laser types are the most effective. A search was conducted in the Pubmed, Embase and Scopus databases for papers published up to April 2017. PRISMA guidelines for systematic review and meta-analysis were followed. Fifty-two papers were eligible for inclusion in the review. Twenty-five studies were synthesized quantitatively. Lasers were found to increase bo…

Algunos aspectos de la variabilidad de los oogonios en poblaciones actuales del género <i>Chara</i> (Charophyceae). Aplicación paleontoló…

1986

A critical revision of some useful taxonomic criteria in paleontology of Charophytes is carried Out. The results are based in four modern populations ((<i>Chara aculeolata, Chara</i> aff.<i>baltica, Chara delicatula</i> and <i>Chara globularis</i>) and they permit to make some serious objections to these critera. The results are related with three principal aspects: the meaning of the absolute magnitudes of me girogonite, the behaviour of his joint variation and the morphological variability during the calcification process. In general, and for each one of the four populations, an absence of influence of the position of the girogonite over their measureme…
