Genetic variability in hepatitis C virus and its role in antiviral treatment response

Summary.  Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a major health problem worldwide, infecting an estimated 170 million people. The high genetic variability of HCV contributes to the chronicity of hepatitis C. Here, we report results from a large-scale sequence analysis of 67 patients infected with HCV genotype 1, 23 with subtype 1a and 44 with subtype 1b. Two regions of the HCV genome were analysed in samples prior to combined therapy with alpha interferon plus ribavirin, one compressing the hypervariable regions (HVR1, HVR2 and HVR3) of the E2 glycoprotein and another one including the interferon-sensitive determining region (ISDR) and the V3 domain of the NS5A protein. Heart rate variability is associated with disease severity and portal hypertension in cirrhosis

Introduction: Autonomic nervous system activity in cirrhotic portal hypertension is linked to hyperdynamic circulation. Heart rate variability (HRV) is a validated noninvasive method to assess the sympathovagal balance. The amount and distribution of genetic variability in host populations can have significant effects on the outcome of host-parasite interactions. We studied the effect of mating system and genetic variability on susceptibility of Lymnaea stagnalis snails to trematode parasites. Mating system of snails from eight populations differing in the amount of genetic variability was manipulated, and self- and cross-fertilized offspring were exposed to naturally occurring trematode parasites in a controlled lake experiment. Hydrodynamic response of a loam soil after wetting with different methods

Different points in a field can be wetted with different natural or artificial rainfall amounts and intensities. Therefore, a non-uniform soil wetting could occur during short-term monitoring of soil hydrodynamic parameters and its global effect on soil characterization is not easily predictable. For an initially dry loam soil, a sequence of three beerkan infiltration runs was performed at fixed sampling points in a period of two weeks. Physical and hydraulic characterization of a clay soil at the plot scale

Summary The soil physical and hydraulic properties have to be determined for interpreting and simulating many hydrological processes. An investigation was carried out to determine the physical and hydraulic characteristics of a clay soil at the plot scale. An intensive sampling of the surface soil layer of two plots of 4 × 11 m2 was carried out by measuring, for each plot, dry soil bulk density, ρb, and antecedent soil water content, θi, at 88 sampling points and field-saturated soil hydraulic conductivity, Kfs, at 176 sampling points. Comparing different application procedures of the water drop penetration time test to assess soil water repellency in a fire affected Sicilian area

Abstract The Water Drop Penetration Time (WDPT) technique was applied in two subsequent years (2016 and 2017) to check surface soil water repellency (SWR) in a Sicilian mountain area affected by a wildfire on June 2016. A total of 93 sites were sampled and from 3 to 100 droplets were used to characterize a site. The detected SWR varied with the severity of the wildfire, being practically absent in the unburnt control area and slight to extreme in the burnt areas. The percentage of extremely repellent sites increased with wildfire severity. Spatial and temporal patterns of throughfall quantity and quality in a tropical montane forest in Ecuador

Summary In forests, complex canopy processes control the change in volume and chemical composition of rain water. We hypothesize that (i) spatial patterns, (ii) the temporal stability of spatial patterns, and (iii) the temporal course of solute concentrations can be used to explore these processes. The study area at 1950 m above sea level in the south Ecuadorian Andes is far away from anthropogenic emission sources and marine influences. It received ca. 2200 mm of rain annually. Flux heterogeneity and evapotranspiration partitioning in a sparse canopy: the fallow savanna

Abstract This paper focuses on in situ measurements obtained during the intensive observation period of the HAPEX-Sahel experiment. Micrometeorological measurements and trunk sap flow monitoring were combined to analyse transfer characteristics of a fallow savanna site within the East Central Supersite. Results show that the shrub canopy heterogeneity induces a large spatial variability of solar irradiance, soil heat flux and sensible and latent heat fluxes at the grassland level. This variability is induced by both a “shade effect” and a “wake effect”. Variabilidad espacial de los cambios de cauce en una rambla mediterránea en las seis últimas décadas (1946-2006)

An analysis of morphological changes during the last six decades is presented for the Rambla de Cervera, a Mediterranean ephemeral stream located in the eastern sector of the Iberian Mountain Range. The studied channel (16.5 km) has two contrasted sectors: a horst confined sector (5.5 km) and a graben sector (11 km). Channel changes were analysed through the analysis of aerial photographs, with geographical information systems (GIS) and comparison of topographic surveys made with a GPS-RTK.
