UiA Accelerated Life Time Bearing Test Rig – Test 3, Variable speed around 50rpm
2021
Vibration data from an accelerated lifetime test of a bearing. Contains raw vibration data and shaft position data. The mean shaft speed is 50rpm with a variation +- 40 rpm. Can be used for fault diagnosis and remaining useful lifetime estimation. Please see "00_ReadMe.pdf" file for more details.
On Using the Theory of Regular Functions to Prove the ε-Optimality of the Continuous Pursuit Learning Automaton
2013
Published version of a chapter in the book: Recent Trends in Applied Artificial Intelligence. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-38577-3_27 There are various families of Learning Automata (LA) such as Fixed Structure, Variable Structure, Discretized etc. Informally, if the environment is stationary, their ε-optimality is defined as their ability to converge to the optimal action with an arbitrarily large probability, if the learning parameter is sufficiently small/large. Of these LA families, Estimator Algorithms (EAs) are certainly the fastest, and within this family, the set of Pursuit algorithms have been considered to be the pioneering schemes. The…
Prelogical Test: An Alternative Tool for Early Detection of Learning Difficulties
2014
Abstract Difficulties during the preschool age commonly lead to children who cannot solve problems, organize information and create meaning. It is necessary to predict factors that may affect their future learning. The aim is to develop an evaluation tool, to be applied in groups and that can easily evaluate results, to detect future learning problems in children of 3-6 years old. Computational intelligence techniques could contribute greatly to analyze results and to detect patterns that otherwise would not be apparent. Two protocols were implemented: an Indirect Variables Protocol (IVP) which captures children's personal data, and a Direct Variables Protocol (DVP) that assesses the graphi…
Ejercicio físico regular y variables cognitivas y emocionales en mujeres
2014
The relationship between fundamental movement skills and self-reported physical activity during Finnish junior high school
2013
Background: Previous studies have shown that fundamental movement skills (FMS) and physical activity are related. Specifically, earlier studies have demonstrated that the ability to perform a variety of FMS increases the likelihood of children participating in a range of physical activities throughout their lives. To date, however, there have not been studies focused on the development of, or the relationship between, these variables through junior high school (that is, between the ages of 13 and 15). Such studies might provide important insights into the relationships between FMS and physical activity during adolescence, and suggest ways to design more effective physical education programm…
The analysis of urban travellers’ latent preferences to explain their mode choice behaviour
2012
Our research aims to explore the impact of latent variables, mirroring urban travellers’ attitudes and perceptions, on the individual decision making process regarding the mode of transport. The paper describes the first results of an ongoing research activity, which derive from a pilot study conducted in Palermo, the capital of the Sicilian Region (in the south of Italy), and demonstrate that policy makers, in designing a socially desirable and environmentally sustainable urban mobility system, should take into account how travellers perceive the qualitative dimensions of transport.
A Novel Non-Stationary Channel Model Utilizing Brownian Random Paths
2014
This paper proposes a non-stationary channel model in which real-time dynamics of the mobile station (MS) are taken into account. We utilize Brownian motion (BM) processes to model targeted and non-targeted dynamics of the MS. The proposed trajectory model consists of both drift and random components to capture both targeted and non-targeted motions of the MS. The Brownian trajectory model is then employed to provide a non-stationary channel model, in which the scattering effects of the propagation area are modelled by a non-centred one-ring geometric scattering model. The starting point of the motion is a fixed point in the propagation environment, whereas its terminating point is a random…

Advances in asthma pathophysiology: stepping forward from the Maurizio Vignola experience
2015
Maurizio Vignola was a superb and innovative researcher, who wrote seminal papers on the biology of airway epithelium in asthma. Inflammation and remodelling were the main topics of his research, mostly conducted in biopsy specimens from patients with asthma of variable severity, encompassing the entire spectrum of the disease from mild to severe asthma. His observations contributed to define the biology of asthma as we know it today, and opened the way to the personalised treatment of asthma. His group has successfully continued to investigate the biology and clinical aspects of bronchial asthma, with major interest in the clinical use of biomarkers to monitor disease activity, and in the …
Multi-stage Linear Programming Optimization for Pump Scheduling
2014
This study presents a methodology based on Linear Programming for determining the optimal pump schedule on a 24-hour basis, considering as decision variables the continuous pump flow rates which are subsequently transformed into a discrete schedule. The methodology was applied on a case study derived from the benchmark Anytown network. To evaluate the LP reliability, a comparison was made with solutions generated by a Hybrid Discrete Dynamically Dimensioned Search (HD-DDS) algorithm. The cost associated with the result derived from the LP initial solution was shown to be lower than that obtained with repeated HD-DDS runs with differing random seeds. (C) 2013 The Authors.
