Sunk cost of local elected representatives in situation of fiscal competition: An example of escalating commitment
2018
Abstract Introduction Competition between French local communities to build infrastructures to attract enterprises and residents could sometimes result in irrational public spending. Objectives Show the influence of psychological factors and the phenomenon of escalating commitment in particular on this type of economic decision. Method We conducted a survey comprising four scenarios which were sent to 285 local elected representatives and we study the impact of the factors “Amount of sunk costs” and “Level of project completion” on two dependent variables, “the desire to complete the project” and “the judgment regarding the quality of the investment”. The scenarios presented a project which…
Development of Planning in Relation to Age, Attention, Simultaneous and Successive Processing
1994
This study investigated the development of planning and its relationship with age and other cognitive processes taken from the PASS model. Ninety-nine students in grades two, four, and eleven were administered planning, simultaneous processing, successive processing, and attention tasks. MANOVA with grade level and gender as independent variables revealed that grade level had a significant effect on planning, whereas gender did not. All but one planning variable showed a significant main effect of grade in subsequent ANOVAs. Pair-wise comparisons between grade levels indicated that the developmental trajectories were not uniform in different tasks. Regression analyses indicated that the co…
Comparing Traditional and IRT Scoring of Forced-Choice Tests.
2018
This article explores how traditional scores obtained from different forced-choice (FC) formats relate to their true scores and item response theory (IRT) estimates. Three FC formats are considered from a block of items, and respondents are asked to (a) pick the item that describes them most (PICK), (b) choose the two items that describe them the most and the least (MOLE), or (c) rank all the items in the order of their descriptiveness of the respondents (RANK). The multi-unidimensional pairwise-preference (MUPP) model, which is extended to more than two items per block and different FC formats, is applied to obtain the responses to each item block. Traditional and IRT (i.e., expected a po…
Estudio demográfico de Aldaia (1669-1890)
1995
A Spatial Difference-in-Differences Estimator to Evaluate the Effect of Change in Public Mass Transit Systems on House Prices
2014
Evaluating the impact of public mass transit systems on real-estate values is an important application of the hedonic price model (HPM). Recently, a mathematical transformation of this approach has been proposed to account for the potential omission of latent spatial variables that may overestimate the impact of accessibility to mass transit systems on values. The development of a Difference-in-Differences (DID) estimator, based on the repeat-sales approach, is a move in the right direction. However, such an estimator neglects the possibility that specification of the price equation may follow a spatial autoregressive process with respect to the dependent variable. The objective of this pap…
409 Using rai-hc assessment instrument to classify home care clients in Finland based on fire emergency evacuation capacity
2016
Background When an uncontrollable fire is detected in a building there may be a 2–3 minutes window for the occupants to move to safety. Poor physical function and cognition may become critical factors in an evacuation situation. In this study a novel functional scale measuring emergency evacuation capacity of home care clients is presented. Methods A fire security expert visited about 250 home care clients assessing their evacuation capacities. For the evacuation capacity three categories were used: 1) is able to evacuate; 2) may be able; 3) unable to evacuate. This data was linked to comprehensive assessments of clients functional and health status performed by home care nurses using the i…
Relationship between Perception and Socio-Economic Characteristics of Culture Community in the Development of Marine Ecotourism in Nusmapi Island
2021
Marine tourism is a type of special interest tourism, namely by managing and utilizing marine and coastal landscapes, both those that are managed directly such as swimming, boating, snorkeling, diving, or indirectly such as picnics and beach sports. Nusmapi Island has the potential to be developed as a marine tourism object which has the potential for waters and coral reefs that are in good condition. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the level of public perception and the socio-economic conditions of the local community on Nusmapi Island. In October-November 2020 this research was carried out on Nusmapi Island, Manokwari Regency. The descriptive explorator…
Psychometric properties on a romantic love myths scale: The case of the myths, fallacies and erroneous beliefs about the ideal of romantic love scale
2021
Understanding the construct of romantic love is an important task in societies all around the world. However, instruments designed to assess this construct are scarce and most of them were developed more than a decade ago. De la Peña, Ramos, Luzón, and Recio (2011) proposed the Myths, Fallacies and Erroneous Beliefs about the Ideal of Romantic Love Scale. In this current study we provide the psychometric properties of this scale in a representative sample of adolescents. The analytic strategy included both Exploratory Factor Analysis and Confirmatory Factor Analysis. We achieved a best-factor structure using a unidimensional model of romantic beliefs which also had an adequate estimated rel…
The Perception and Attitudes Towards City Garbage Management: A First Analysis
2017
The main aim of this paper is to to explore the perception and attitude of people toward an important issue like the City Garbage Management. A new Survey Questionnaire to measure the perception and attitudes towards city garbage management has been developed by the Authors, in order to realize a very first analysis of compatibility of the Comprehensive Action Determination Model - CADM (Klöckner, 2013) with City Garbage Management issues. To test the application of the CADM model to City Garbage Management, a simple linear regression was calculated to predict the dependent variables based on predictor variables according the CADM model. The linear regression analysis shows a first confirma…
Varying numbers of players in small-sided soccer games modifies action opportunities during training
2014
This study examined the effects of the numbers of players involved in small-sided team games (underloading and overloading) on opportunities for maintaining ball possession, shooting at goal and passing to teammates during training. These practice constraint manipulations were assumed to alter values of key performance variables identified in previous research, such as interpersonal distances between players and time to intercept shots and passes. Fifteen male soccer players (age: 19.60±1.99 years) were grouped into three teams and played against each other in different versions of small-sided soccer games, in which the number of players was manipulated in three different conditions: 5 vs. …
