Technological and legislative status point of stationary energy storages in the EU

2019

Abstract European renewable generation has been supported through several policy instruments in the last decades, and this has caused a significant growth of the renewable energy sector, spurred by the ambitious climate and energy policy targets. Despite this impetuous growth, the electricity infrastructure is not yet ready to accept increasing shares of variable renewable energy sources (RES) generation, and this is causing grid balance challenges, due to the inherently variable nature of the PV and wind energy. In order to overcome this issue, allowing higher shares of renewable generation in the energy sector, energy storage (ES) systems are becoming increasingly competitive in the globa…

Analysis and modeling of wind directions time series

2013

This work aims at studying some aspects of wind directions in Italy and supplying appropriate models. A comparison is presented between independent mixture and Hidden Markov models, which seem to be appropriate as far as the series we studied.

The association between mathematical word problems and reading comprehension

2008

This study aimed to investigate the interplay between mathematical word problem skills and reading comprehension. The participants were 225 children aged 9–10 (Grade 4). The children’s text comprehension and mathematical word problem‐solving performance was tested. Technical reading skills were investigated in order to categorise participants as good or poor readers. The results showed that performance on maths word problems was strongly related to performance in reading comprehension. Fluent technical reading abilities increased the aforementioned skills. However, even after controlling for the level of technical reading involved, performance in maths word problems was still related to rea…

A COMPARISON BETWEEN COMBUSTION PHASE INDICATORS FOR OPTIMAL SPARK TIMING

2008

The closed-loop control of internal combustion engine spark timing may be accomplished by means of a combustion phase indicator, i.e., a parameter, derived from in-cylinder pressure analysis, whose variation is mainly referable to combustion phase shift and assumes a fixed reference value under optimal spark timing operation. The aim of the present work is a comparison between different combustion phase indicators, focusing on the performance attainable by a feedback spark timing control, which uses the indicator as pilot variable. An extensive experimental investigation has been carried out, verifying the relationship between indicators’ optimal values and the main engine running parameter…

A non-linear Ritz method for the analysis of low velocity impact induced dynamics in variable angle tow composite laminates

2021

Abstract Variable angle tow (VAT) laminates feature composite layers reinforced by fibres following continuous curved paths and offer a wide structural design space for the manufacturing of composite components. In this work, a formulation for the analysis of the impact-induced dynamics in VAT laminated plates is proposed, implemented and tested in this work. The method is based on the adoption of first order shear deformation kinematics and includes von Karman non-linear strains. The discrete system is obtained by employing a pb-2 Ritz series expansion into the Hamilton’s variational statement, while the impact loading is modelled through Hertzian contact law. The resulting non-linear gove…

Theorems of restricted dynamic shakedown

1993

Abstract Dynamic shakedown for a rate-independent material with internal variables is addressed in the hypothesis that the load values are restricted to those of a specified load history of finite or even infinite duration, thus ruling out the possibility—typical of classical shakedown theory—of indefinite load repetitions. Instead of the usual approach to dynamic shakedown, based on the bounded plastic work criterion, another approach is adopted here, based on the adaptation time criterion. Static, kinematic and mixed-form theorems are presented, which characterize the minimum adaptation time (MAT), a feature of the structure-load system, but which are also able to assess whether plastic w…

Combining employment and family in Europe: the role of family policies in health.

2013

Objectives: The objectives of this study were: (i) to analyse the relationship between health status and paid working hours and household composition in the EU-27, and (ii) to examine whether patterns of association differ as a function of family policy typologies and gender. Methods: Cross-sectional study based on data from the 5th European Working Conditions Survey of 2010. The sample included married or cohabiting employees aged 25-64 years from the EU-27 (10,482 men and 8,882 women). The dependent variables were self-perceived health status and psychological well-being. Results: Irrespective of differences in family policy typologies between countries, working long hours was more common…

Bounds to internal forces for elastic-plastic solids subjected to variable loads

1979

Considering an elastic-plastic workhardening solid with piecewise linear yield surfaces and a piecewise linear workhardening law, we give a method for constructing bounds to the internal forces and to the (hardened) yield stresses produced by the action of variable loads at any point of the body and at any time. The loading history is supposed to be unknown, but the loads range within a given domain.

Irregular Time Dependent Obstacles

2010

Abstract We study the obstacle problem for the Evolutionary p-Laplace Equation when the obstacle is discontinuous and does not have regularity in the time variable. Two quite different procedures yield the same solution.
