Identifying Problematic Study Progression and “At-Risk” Students in Higher Education in Finland

2018

Finland offers a specific example of a country with a broad enrolment in higher education, where the educational starting age is relatively high and where studies may last considerably longer than in most other European countries. This study attempted to identify at-risk students in Finnish universities with the greatest probability of non-completion of studies. This probability is by far the highest in the fields of information technology and information sciences and, in specific cases, in the fields of mathematics and science and economics and management. The situation of at-risk students is best described in terms of the scant use of time for present studies, uncertainty regarding their …

Hybrid approximation for solutions of high-order integro-differential equations including variable delay

2020

Abstract In this study, a numerical technique with hybrid approximation is developed for solving high-order linear integro-differential equations including variable delay under the initial conditions. These type of problems are of applications in mathematical physics, mechanics, natural sciences, electronics and computer science. The aim of this work is to investigate an approximation with the matrix forms of Taylor and Laguerre polynomials along with standard collocation points. By the reduction of the solution of this problem with regard to the matrix relations, the solution of a system of algebraic equations has been obtained. The usefulness of this algorithm has been demonstrated by num…

Path integral solution by fractional calculus

2008

In this paper, the Path Integral solution is developed in terms of complex moments. The method is applied to nonlinear systems excited by normal white noise. Crucial point of the proposed procedure is the representation of the probability density of a random variable in terms of complex moments, recently proposed by the first two authors. Advantage of this procedure is that complex moments do not exhibit hierarchy. Extension of the proposed method to the study of multi degree of freedom systems is also discussed.

From the theory of “congeneric surd equations” to “Segre's bicomplex numbers”

2015

We will study the historical pathway of the emergence of Tessarines or Bicomplex numbers, from their origin as "imaginary" solutions of irrational equations, to their insertion in the context of study of the algebras of hypercomplex numbers.

Variable Step Size P&O Algorithms for Coalescing Pump/Deoiling Hydrocyclone Produced Water Treatment System

2020

This paper presents three variable step size P&O algorithms for optimizing the separation efficiency of a coalescing pump/deoiling hydrocyclone produced water treatment system. By continuously adjusting the pumping pressure, and subsequently the coalescing effect, the algorithms are used to minimize the oil concentration downstream the hydrocyclone. Due to the variable step size, the algorithms react rapidly to changes in the upstream produced water characteristics, at the same time as they reduce (or eliminate) steady-state oscillations. Based on both simulation and experimental testing, the study discusses advantages and disadvantages of the algorithms.

Long-term X-ray variability of the microquasar system LS 5039/RX J1826.2−1450

2003

We report on the results of the spectral and timing analysis of a BeppoSAX observation of the microquasar system LS 5039/RX J1826.2-1450. The source was found in a low-flux state with Fx(1-10 keV)= 4.7 x 10^{-12} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1}, which represents almost one order of magnitude lower than a previous RXTE observation 2.5 years before. The 0.1--10 keV spectrum is described by an absorbed power-law continuum with photon-number spectral index Gamma=1.8+-0.2 and hydrogen column density of NH=1.0^{+0.4}_{-0.3} x 10^{22} cm^{-2}. According to the orbital parameters of the system the BeppoSAX observation covers the time of an X-ray eclipse should one occur. However, the 1.6-10 keV light curve does…

Accounting for soil parameter uncertainty in a physically based and distributed approach for rainfall-triggered landslides

2015

In this study we propose a probabilistic approach for coupled distributed hydrological-hillslope stability models that accounts for soil parameters uncertainty at basin scale. The geotechnical and soil retention curve parameters are treated as random variables across the basin and theoretical probability distributions of the Factor of Safety (FS) are estimated. The derived distributions are used to obtain the spatio-temporal dynamics of probability of failure, in terms of parameters uncertainty, conditioned to soil moisture dynamics. The framework has been implemented in the tRIBS-VEGGIE (Triangulated Irregular Network (TIN)-based Real-time Integrated Basin Simulator-VEGetation Generator fo…

Using unsteady-state water level data to estimate channel roughness and discharge hydrograph

2009

A novel methodology for simultaneous discharge and channel roughness estimation is developed and applied to data sets available at three experimental sites. The methodology is based on the synchronous measurement of water level data in two river sections far some kilometers from each other, as well as on the use of a diffusive flow routing solver and does not require any direct velocity measurement. The methodology is first analyzed for the simplest case of a channel with a large slope, where the kinematic assumption holds. A sensitivity and a model error analysis are carried out in this hypothesis in order to show the stability of the results with respect to the error in the input paramete…

Uncertainty analysis of the influence of rainfall time resolution in the modelling of urban drainage systems

2005

In urban drainage modelling, rainfall temporal variability can be considered as one of the most critical knowledge elements when dealing with rainfall–runoff models input data. The rainfall data temporal resolution usually available for practical applications is often lower than that requested for the rainfall–runoff simulation in urban areas, greatly compromising model accuracy. The present paper evaluates the influence of rainfall temporal resolution on the uncertainty of the response of rainfall–runoff modelling in urban environments. Analyses have been carried out using historical rainfall–discharge data collected for about 10 years in Parco d'Orleans experimental catchment (Palermo, It…

Variable power-law scaling of hillslope Hortonian rainfall–runoff processes

2019

Hydrological studies focused on Hortonian rainfall–run-off scaling have found that the run-off depth generally declines with the plot length in power-law scaling. Both the power-law proportional coefficient and the scaling exponent show great variability for specific conditions, but why and how they vary remain unclear. In the present study, the scaling of hillslope Hortonian rainfall–run-off processes is investigated for different rainfall, soil infiltration, and hillslope surface characteristics using the physically based cell-based rainfall-infiltration-run-off model. The results show that both temporally intermittent and steady rainfalls can result in prominent power-law scaling at the …
