Whether and to what extent mass media contribute to the acquisition of knowledge depends fundamentally on the senses addressed by a particular medium. Constraining the thin disc initial mass function using Galactic classical Cepheids

Context: The Initial Mass Function (IMF) plays a crucial role on galaxy evolution and its implications on star formation theory make it a milestone for the next decade. It is in the intermediate and high mass ranges where the uncertainties of the IMF are larger. This is a major subject of debate and analysis both for Galactic and extragalactic science. A general constitutive framework is presented capable of representing different irreversible deformation modes, like plasticity, elastic damage, complex evolution of the hardening properties and the induced coupling effects. The formulation can be framed in the generalized standard material models with internal variables and multiple dissipative activation functions. In order to obtain the elastic response of nonhomogeneous materials, it is often sufficient to adopt an implicit homogenization technique which allows one to treat the material as an equivalent continuum medium. For large stress concentration or for accurate small scale studies this widely applied technique may show some limit and a more refined analysis might be required involving nonlocal elastic effects, see e.g. Kroner (1967), Eringen et al. This part is based on Suslin and Voevodsky’s theory of relative cycles that we develop in categorical terms, in the style of EGA. The climax of the theory is obtained in the study of a pullback operation for suitable relative cycles which is the incarnation of intersection theory in this language. Properties of this pullback operation, and on the conditions necessary to its definition, are made again inspired by intersection theory.
