An increasing number of psycholinguistic studies have adopted a megastudy approach to explore the role that different variables play in the speed and/or accuracy with which words are recognised and/or pronounced in different languages. However, despite evidence for deep and shallow orthographies, little is known about the role that several orthographic, phonological and semantic variables play in visual word recognition and word production of words from intermediate-depth languages, as European Portuguese (EP). Explicitness or implicitness as assumed properties of translated texts and other texts in multilingual communication have for some time been the object of speculation and, at a later stage, of more systematic research in linguistics and translation studies. This paper undertakes an investigation of explicitness/implicitness and related phenomena of translated texts on the level of cohesion. A corpus-based research architecture, embedded in an empirical research methodology, will be outlined, and first results and possible explanations will be discussed. Positive Teacher Affect and Maternal Support Facilitate Adjustment After the Transition to First Grade

This longitudinal study, conducted among a sample of Finnish primary-school children, examined the proposition that a single high-quality relationship (either with a teacher or a parent) can buffer against adjustment problems. Teachers rated the externalizing problems and prosocial behaviors of 378 children in Grade 1 and again in Grade 2. Relationship measures gathered in Grade 1 included teacher reports of positive affect for the child and mother reports of support for the child. The results supported our proposition by showing that for child adjustment after the transition to primary school it was critical to have at least one high-quality relationship either with a teacher or a parent. …

Abstract This longitudinal study investigated the cross-lagged associations between children’s academic skill development, task-avoidant behaviour in the context of homework, and parental beliefs about their child’s success from kindergarten to Grade 2. The participants were 1267 children. The children’s pre-skills were assessed at the end of the kindergarten year, and math and reading skills at the end of Grade 1 and Grade 2. In this paper the design of unknown inputs proportional integral observers for Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy models subject to unmeasurable decision variables is proposed. These unknown inputs affect both state and output of the system. The synthesis of these observers is based on two hypotheses that the unknown inputs are under the polynomials form with their kth derivatives zero for the first one and bounded norm for the second one, hence two approaches. Intermediate Polar Cataclysmic Variables (IPCVs), also known as DQ Her stars after their prototype, are cataclysmic variable stars characterized by the presence of an accreting, magnetic, rapidly rotating white dwarf surrounded by an accretion disk magnetically truncated by the inner magnetosphere of the star. These objects exhibit a magnetic field of the order of few MG, able to disrupt the inner part of the disk but not strong enough to inhibit the formation of a disk. These stars show a strong X-ray emission with a stochastic pulsation that in some cases arise in the inner part of the disk. Returns to Schooling in Spain. How Reliable Are IV Estimates?

This paper studies the Ordinary Least-Squared (OLS) and Instrumental Variables (IV) estimates of the returns to schooling for male workers in Spain. OLS estimates are often biased due to the endogeneity of schooling, measurement errors or omitted variables. Proper IV estimates correct this bias. The reliability of family background, natural experiments (based on changes in the education system and season of birth) and the availability of a college in the province is checked using Spanish data.
