Multi Regression Analysis of Skin Temperature Variation During Cycling Exercise

2017

In the last years, infrared thermography (IRT) has become a popular technique to determine human skin temperature during exercise [1–3]. IRT presents several applications in sport science such as the detection of injury, the thermophysiology assessment, the sport clothing assessment/design, or its application in equestrian sport, among others [3]. However, IRT in sports is still a recent topic and there are many fundamental discussions concerning different methodological aspects, being one of them the analysis of the thermal data [4].

Interrater reliability of ultrasound in the diagnosis of sialolithiasis

2019

The aim of this study was to assess the interrater reliability of ultrasound for diagnosing sialolithiasis. A total of 100 consecutive patients with signs of obstructive sialadenopathy were evaluated. The patients all underwent ultrasound examinations in a standardized manner conducted by one specialist with extensive experience in the management of salivary gland disorders and proficiency in head and neck ultrasonography. The video recordings were sent to six colleagues with comparable experience without providing any further information about the patients' medical history and physical examination. The overall agreement between the seven observers was substantial, with a κ of 0.765 for th…

Towards real-time detection of cognitive effort in driving: Contribution of cardiac measurement

2016

Background: Change in the prevalence of raised blood pressure could be due to both shifts in the entire distribution of blood pressure (representing the combined effects of public health interventions and secular trends) and changes in its high-blood-pressure tail (representing successful clinical interventions to control blood pressure in the hypertensive population). Our aim was to quantify the contributions of these two phenomena to the worldwide trends in the prevalence of raised blood pressure. Methods: We pooled 1018 population-based studies with blood pressure measurements on 88.6 million participants from 1985 to 2016. We first calculated mean systolic blood pressure (SBP), mean dia…

Polymorphisms of the UCP2 gene are associated with body fat distribution and risk of abdominal obesity in Spanish population

2011

Eur J Clin Invest 2011 Abstract Background  Increased accumulation of fat results from an imbalance between energy expenditure and intake, being modulated by different environmental and genetic factors. Uncoupling proteins (UCPs) are mitochondrial carrier proteins able to spend energy generating heat. Therefore, variations in these genes are good candidates as potential modulators of body fat accumulation. Our aim was to investigate the possible association of genetic variations of the gene codifying the UCP2 protein with obesity and fat distribution. Design  We performed a cross-sectional study in 2367 individuals from two population-based studies from different regions of Spain. The Horte…

The Temporal Development of Early and Late CNV in a Simple Discrimination Paradigm: the Effects of Motor Preparation and Average Reaction Time

1980

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the temporal development of early and late contingent negative variation (CNV) in a simple discrimination paradigm. The CNV typically arises when a warning stimulus is paired with an imperative stimulus which, in turn, is followed by a motor reaction. If the interstimulus interval is less than approximately 2 sec the CNV begins immediately after the positive deflection (P300) following the warning stimulus. It may appear as a steadily rising negative potential shift that reaches its peak with the presentation of the imperative stimulus, or as sustained negativity throughout the rest of the foreperiod. If the interstimulus interval is extended beyond …

The vaccinaTion & Hpv Knowledge (THinK) questionnaire: a reliability and validity study on a sample of women living in Sicily (southern-Italy)

2019

Objective The aim of this study was to introduce the VaccinaTion & Hpv Knowledge (THinK) questionnaire to assess knowledge about human papillomavirus (HPV) and attitude to HPV-vaccination. Its reliability and validity was demonstrated in a sample of women living in Sicily (southern Italy). Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted on a sample of 220 women at the “Paolo Giaccone” University Hospital in Palermo (Sicily), aged 18–61. Data were analyzed through Cronbach’s alpha and exploratory factor analysis, followed by a structural equation model with measurement component. The two-level data structure was explicitly considered. Results Three dimensions were found: “knowledge of HP…

Increase in viral gastroenteritis outbreaks in Europe and epidemic spread of new norovirus variant.

2004

Background Highly publicised outbreaks of norovirus gastroenteritis in hospitals in the UK and Ireland and cruise ships in the USA sparked speculation about whether this reported activity was unusual. Methods We analysed data collected through a collaborative research and surveillance network of viral gastroenteritis in ten European countries (England and Wales were analysed as one region). We compiled data on total number of outbreaks by month, and compared genetic sequences from the isolated viruses. Data were compared with historic data from a systematic retrospective review of surveillance systems and with a central database of viral sequences. Findings Three regions (England and Wales,…

Amplicon-based high-throughput pooled sequencing identifies mutations in CYP7B1 and SPG7 in sporadic spastic paraplegia patients

2011

Hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) is a neurodegenerative disorder defined clinically by progressive lower limb spasticity and weakness. HSP is a genetically highly heterogeneous condition with at least 46 gene loci identified so far, involving X-linked, autosomal recessive (AR) and autosomal dominant inheritance. For correct diagnosis, molecular testing is essential because clinical parameters by themselves are not reliable to differentiate HSP forms. The purpose of this study was to establish amplicon-based high-throughput genotyping for AR-HSP. A sample of 187 index cases with apparently sporadic or recessive spastic paraplegia were analyzed by applying an array-based amplification stra…
