Seasonal variations in the onset and healing rates of venous leg ulcers

2010

Objectives As many vascular pathologies exhibit circannual fluctuation, the aim of this study was to assess the chronobiological features of venous ulcers. Methods Based on a retrospective survey of the case histories of 391 venous ulcer patients, the rates of ulcer onset and healing in each month were analysed statistically; a time series was constructed to evaluate the seasonality. Results There was a significantly higher frequency of ulcer onset during the warmer part of the year (April–October), and onset showed strong seasonality. Healing rates were also unequally and statistically significantly distributed throughout the year: ulcers that appeared or that were treated with specialized…

A first comparative map of copy number variations in the sheep genome.

2011

article i nfo We carried out a cross species cattle-sheep array comparative genome hybridization experiment to identify copy number variations (CNVs) in the sheep genome analysing ewes of Italian dairy or dual-purpose breeds (Bagnolese, Comisana, Laticauda, Massese, Sarda, and Valle del Belice) using a tiling oligonucleotide array with ~385,000 probes designed on the bovine genome. We identified 135 CNV regions (CNVRs; 24 reported in more than one animal) covering ~10.5 Mb of the virtual sheep genome referred to the bovine genome (0.398%) with a mean and a median equal to 77.6 and 55.9 kb, respectively. A comparative analysis between the identified sheep CNVRs and those reported in cattle a…

SULT1A1 gene deletion in BRCA2-associated male breast cancer: a link between genes and environmental exposures?

2013

SULT1A1, a member of sulfotransferase superfamily, is a drug and hormone metabolizing enzyme involved in the metabolism of a variety of potential mammary carcinogens of endogenous and exogenous origin. Interestingly, the metabolic activity of SULT1A1 can be affected by varia- tions in gene copy number. Male Breast Cancer (MBC) is a rare disease and less investigated disease compared to female BC (FBC). As in FBC, the concurrent effects of genetic risk factors, particularly BRCA2 mutations, increased exposure to estrogens and environmental carcinogens play a relevant role in MBC. By quantitative real-time PCR with TaqMan probes, we investigated the presence of SULT1A1 gene copy number variat…

CLOVE: classification of genomic fusions into structural variation events

2017

Background A precise understanding of structural variants (SVs) in DNA is important in the study of cancer and population diversity. Many methods have been designed to identify SVs from DNA sequencing data. However, the problem remains challenging because existing approaches suffer from low sensitivity, precision, and positional accuracy. Furthermore, many existing tools only identify breakpoints, and so not collect related breakpoints and classify them as a particular type of SV. Due to the rapidly increasing usage of high throughput sequencing technologies in this area, there is an urgent need for algorithms that can accurately classify complex genomic rearrangements (involving more than …

Discretization estimates for an elliptic control problem

1998

An optimal control problem governed by an elliptic equation written in variational form in an abstract functional framework is considered. The control is subject to restrictions. The optimality conditions are established and the Ritz-Galerkin discretization is introduced. If the error estimate corresponding to the elliptic equation is given as a function like where h is the discretization parameter and is an integer, then the error estimates for the optimal control, for the optimal state and for the optimal value are obtained. These results are applied first for a Two-Point BVP and next for a 2D/3D elliptic problem as state equation. Next a spectral method is used in the discretization proc…

Science and news articles on mirror neurons: two degrees of popularization

2012

The paper deals with the linguistic strategies used by authors with a different degree of specialised expertise (scientists, experts, science and general journalists) to popularize and re-contextualize the mirror neuron discovery in the online Scientific American and New York Times versions. In particular, aiming at a comparison between the two journals, the authors focused on those linguistic and interdiscoursive strategies adopted to popularize three main aspects for each article: the definition of mirror neurons, the explanation of their activation in the brain and their function in social interaction.
