Technological Transformation in the Global Pulp and Paper Industry : Concluding Remarks
2018
The volume has provided us with illustrative, well-documented case studies of technological transformation in the global pulp and paper industry. The research has focused on the roles played by the availability of technology, knowledge, investments, and raw materials on the one hand and demand characteristics on the other, within local, regional, national and transnational organisational frameworks. It has dealt with the relationships between technology transfer, technology leadership, raw material dependence, and product variety on a global scale. The investigation has followed the tradition of in-depth and rich historical descriptions based on primary sources and secondary literature. The…
Technological Transformation in the Global Pulp and Paper Industry : Introduction
2018
At a high level of abstraction, the evolution of any industry is a function of changes in product market demand, availability and supply of capital, energy resources, raw materials knowledge and technology, the surrounding institutional framework and organisational solutions. New technological innovations emerge because of changes in product market demand or institutional framework that encourage entrepreneurs and firms to take advantage of new business opportunities. This contributed volume provides illustrative, well documented case studies of technological transformation in the global pulp and paper industry from the inception of mechanical papermaking in early nineteenth century Europe …
The Reciprocal Relationship Between Emotions and Agency in the Workplace
2017
In conjunction with a growing interest in professional agency, there is a need to understand how emotions are embedded in agentic practice. This chapter examines the emotions bound up with work and how these emotions are related to professional agency. The subjects of our study were leaders (middle management) and employees working in Finnish education and health-care organisations. A qualitative meta-synthesis was conducted to describe the relationship between professional agency and emotions. The study revealed a variety of emotions, including fear and enjoyment, related to professional identity, work, and social relationships. Among both employees and leaders, emotions were found to play…
Instruments measuring fatalism: A systematic review.
2022
This systematic review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the existing scales for fatalism, along with information regarding their methodological robustness. A systematic search was conducted in PsycINFO (PsycARTICLES and Psychology and Behavioral Sciences), PubMed, Scopus, MEDLINE, and Web of Science. Articles were selected if they described a Self-Report questionnaire properly designated for assessing fatalism (both original developments and further validations), if they included a measure in which fatalism is the core construct rather than a subscale of a multidimensional scale, and if they were published in peer-reviewed journals in the English language. The methodological qual…
Integrating Virtual Realities and Psychotherapy: SWOT Analysis on VR and MR Based Treatments of Anxiety and Stress-related Disorders
2021
© 2021 The Author(s). Published by Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group. The use of virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR) technology in clinical psychology is growing. Efficacious VR-based treatments for a variety of disorders have been developed. However, the field of technology-assisted psychotherapy is constantly changing with the advancement in technology. Factors such as interdisciplinary collaboration, consumer familiarity and adoption of VR products, and progress in clinical science all need to be taken into consideration when integrating virtual technologies into psychotherapies. We aim to present an overview of current expert opinions on the use of virtual…

Scientists’ engagement in knowledge transfer and exchange: Individual factors, variety of mechanisms and users
2018
[EN] This article aims to provide a deeper understanding of the individual factors behind scientists' involvement in a wide variety of knowledge transfer and exchange (KTE) activities. By doing so, the article addresses three major shortcomings in the literature. First, this article considers scientists' involvement in both formal and informal KTE activities. Secondly, the study focuses not only on KTE activities with the private sector, but also with other types of agents. Thirdly, the article adopts an individual approach to distinguish between three types of KTE predictors: individual capacities, training and career trajectories, and motivations. Overall, the results of the regression mo…
A closer look at mirrors and quotients of Calabi-Yau threefolds
2016
Let X be the toric variety (P1)4 associated with its four-dimensional polytope 1. Denote by X˜ the resolution of the singular Fano variety Xo associated with the dual polytope 1o. Generically, anticanonical sections Y of X and anticanonical sections Y˜ of X˜ are mirror partners in the sense of Batyrev. Our main result is the following: the Hodge-theoretic mirror of the quotient Z associated to a maximal admissible pair (Y, G) in X is not a quotient Z˜ associated to an admissible pair in X˜ . Nevertheless, it is possible to construct a mirror orbifold for Z by means of a quotient of a suitable Y˜. Its crepant resolution is a Calabi-Yau threefold with Hodge numbers (8, 4). Instead, if we star…
On the birational geometry of the universal Picard variety
2010
We compute the Kodaira dimension of the universal Picard variety P_{d,g} parameterizing line bundles of degree d on curves of genus g under the assumption that (d-g+1,2g-2)=1. We also give partial results for arbitrary degrees d and we investigate for which degrees the universal Picard varieties are birational.
Generically split projective homogeneous varieties. II
2012
AbstractThis article gives a complete classification of generically split projective homogeneous varieties. This project was begun in our previous article [PS10], but here we remove all restrictions on the characteristic of the base field, give a new uniform proof that works in all cases and in particular includes the case PGO2n+ which was missing in [PS10].
