Diffusion of forest biorefineries in Scandinavia and North America

2012

Abstract Biomass-based energy has become a major focus of attention from a variety of directions due to the global challenges of meeting our energy needs. Bioenergy and bio-products are also currently being explored intensively in the forest cluster, as many elements that have in the past guaranteed success have largely disappeared. As the bioenergy and biorefining economies are evolving, there is a need for realistic estimates regarding the factors which affect the diffusion of forest biorefineries. This paper outlines global and national drivers for forest biorefineries in Scandinavia and North America. It explores the financial, political, technological, and ecological and raw-material r…

"Translation and Language Contact in Multicultural Settings. The Case of Asian Migrants in Sicily”

2008

This article addresses the role of translation in the construction of cultural identities in multicultural and host settings. Approaching migration as a form of translation in terms of relexification, cannibalism and hybridization, the essay discusses the example of a new English variety which was developed by Asian immigrants who moved to Sicily. It is suggested that this Indian-Anglo-Italian hybrid variety has been built upon a process of relexification during which Asian immigrants translate their local language into English by keeping the syntactic structure of their native language in the English sentence and by adding a mixture of Sicilian-Italian words. In this context, immigrants ar…

The Wheres and Hows of Residential Choice

2016

International audience; A wide variety of choices and decisions are open to individuals when looking for a place to live: a flat or a house, renting or buying depending on one’s resources and plans; living in a city centre to enjoy its buzz, or in a certain district to have a school close by, or on the outskirts in a more village-like setting; and in this last case, how far from urban centres and major access routes? What ultimately are individuals’ preferences? All these questions presuppose looking at how they perceive and evaluate the urban environment so as to better grasp what it is that leads to residential satisfaction. However, it is not the evaluation or satisfaction in itself that…

Delivering Services to Residential Appliances by Utilizing Remote Resource Awareness

2008

Service providers are nowadays offering a variety of services, and in particular multimedia content delivery. Besides, consumer appliances are increasingly becoming digitalized including support for communication networks. However, it is difficult, and in many cases impossible, to use these services with standard consumer appliances, such as TV and media player devices. Rather, usage is often restricted so that they can only be accessed through web browsers from PCs, mobile phones and similar terminals. This is unfortunate, because dedicated consumer appliances are often better suited to handle the content and thereby give consumers a better experience. Within this paper, three design appro…

Use of selected indigenous yeasts from racemes of Grillo grape variety to improve the production of sparkling base wine

2019

The production of sparkling wines in Sicily is increasing considerably. The most important oenological characteristics of high quality sparkling wines are high content of acidity and low pH. In Sicily, white grape varieties such as those of the cultivar Grillo are characterized by very low concentrations of malic and tartaric acids due to hot climate and reduced rainfall typical of the production area. On the other hand, a very large amount of raceme grapes, characterized by low pH and high content of tartaric and malic acids, is largely produced by Grillo varieties. Hence, the winemaking of racemes might represent a technological solution to increase the quality of the acids in the final w…

Sakārtojuma saikļi dažādu reģistru tekstu saliktos sakārtotos teikumos

2017

Knowledge exchange through science diplomacy to assist disaster risk reduction

2021

Abstract This paper analyses science diplomacy efforts to reduce disaster risks and proposes establishing national knowledge exchange centers (KECs) to help individual states adhere to their Sendai Framework goals. KECs are considered to be interconnected globally and work together to promote resilience efforts by facilitating sharing of information and strategies in risk monitoring, assessment, and ultimately reduction across the globe. KECs can provide high-quality scientific evidence for informed decisionmaking along with a component related to disaster science media to ensure that appropriate knowledge reaches a variety of people who need it in different forms tailored for them. KECs ca…

Die Schmieghyperebenen an die Veronese-Mannigfaltigkeit bei Beliebiger Charakteristik

1982

By means of linear algebra a base-free definition of a Veronese variety V(n,r) is given and also an illuminating description of its osculating primes from which can be deduced in a general form and without difficulty the phenomena of degeneracy in case of small characteristics. (Instance best known: For characteristic 2 all tangents of a conic are confluent.) The last section investigates special problems for the V(1,r) in characteristic p: So the osculating primes of a V(1,p) intersect its node in a V(1,p-2). Furthermore it becomes clearer why for 2<r<¦K¦−1 no elation can fix a V(1,r) (in case of a perfect field).

General Theory: Algebraic Point of View

2009

It is convenient to divide our study of pip-spaces into two stages. In the first one, we consider only the algebraic aspects. That is, we explore the structure generated by a linear compatibility relation on a vector space V , as introduced in Section I.2, without any other ingredient. This will lead us to another equivalent formulation, in terms of particular coverings of V by families of subspaces. This first approach, purely algebraic, is the subject matter of the present chapter. Then, in a second stage, we introduce topologies on the so-called assaying subspaces \(\{V_r \}\). Indeed, as already mentioned in Section I.2, assuming the partial inner product to be nondegenerate implies tha…
