Triangular irreducibility of congruences in quasivarieties

2014

Certain forms of irreducibility as well as of equational definability of relative congruences in quasivarieties are investigated. For any integer \({m \geqslant 3}\) and a quasivariety Q, the notion of an m-triangularily meet-irreducible Q-congruence in the algebras of Q is defined. In Section 2, some characterizations of finitely generated quasivarieties involving this notion are provided. Section 3 deals with quasivarieties with equationally definable m-triangular meets of relatively principal congruences. References to finitely based quasivarieties and varieties are discussed.

Characterizing cognitive problem-solving strategies in patients’ everyday life: The case of patients with Type 1 diabetes

2021

Introduction:Numerous quantitative studies have shown the importance of executive functions (planning, attention, inhibition, and short-term memory) for diabetes treatment compliance. Those studies also point to the paucity of data on action strategies employed by persons with diabetes. The aim of this study is to characterize the action strategies used in six situations typically encountered by persons with Type 1 diabetes (no comorbidities). Methods:This qualitative multiple-case study concerns adult patients with no comorbidities. Eighteen patients were presented with six clinical vignettes portraying emblematic situations and then interviewed. After categorization, the 108 situations wer…

Learning spatio-temporal behavioural sequences

2018

Living beings are able to adapt their behaviour repertoire to environmental constraints. Among the capabilities needed for such improvement, the ability to store and retrieve temporal sequences is of particular importance. This chapter focuses on the description of an architecture based on spiking neurons, able to learn and autonomously generate a sequence of generic objects or events. The neural architecture is inspired by the insect mushroom bodies already taken into account in the previous chapters as a crucial centre for multimodal sensory integration and behaviour modulation in insects. Sequence learning is only one among a variety of functionalities that coexist within the insect brai…

Varieties of Algebras with Superinvolution of Almost Polynomial Growth

2015

Let A be an associative algebra with superinvolution ∗ over a field of characteristic zero and let $c_{n}^{\ast }(A)$ be its sequence of corresponding ∗-codimensions. In case A is finite dimensional, we prove that such sequence is polynomially bounded if and only if the variety generated by A does not contain three explicitly described algebras with superinvolution. As a consequence we find out that no intermediate growth of the ∗-codimensions between polynomial and exponential is allowed.

Vertical integration and exclusivities in maritime freight transport

2011

A key recent theme in maritime freight transport is the involvement of shipping lines in terminal management. Such investments are costly but allow liners to provide better service. Most of these new terminals are dedicated terminals but some are non-exclusive and let rivals access them for a fee. In this paper, we show that a shipping line that builds its own terminal finds it strategically profitable (i) to continue routing part of its cargo through the open port facilities, and (ii) to keep its terminal non-exclusive. In this way, the liner investor pushes part of the rival's freight from the open to the new terminal. Besides, under non-exclusivities, the shipping lines offer a wider var…

A Data-Driven Architecture for Personalized QoE Management in 5G Wireless Networks

2017

With the emergence of a variety of new wireless network types, business types, and QoS in a more autonomic, diverse, and interactive manner, it is envisioned that a new era of personalized services has arrived, which emphasizes users' requirements and service experiences. As a result, users' QoE will become one of the key features in 5G/future networks. In this article, we first review the state of the art of QoE research from several perspectives, including definition, influencing factors, assessment methods, QoE models, and control methods. Then a data-driven architecture for enhancing personalized QoE is proposed for 5G networks. Under this architecture, we specifically propose a two-ste…

Producing Routing Systems Flexibly Using a VRP Metamodel and a Software Product Line

2012

Routing problems occur in a wide variety of situations. Due to the heterogeneity of cases we do not yet know how to manage the complexity of addressing all the relevant aspects in logistic planning and solving the variety of different problem types in a cost-efficient way. In the last decade, we have witnessed an emergence of systematic approach into managing variation within a set of related software systems. This paper presents an application of these advances from software engineering into vehicle routing: we suggest the construction of a higher-level (meta-) model of routing problems and the application of a software product line approach. The proposed approach results in a flexible pro…

Interactive Gradually Generating Relevance Query Refinement Under the Human-Mediated Scenario in Multilingual Settings

2016

As opposed to query modelling, relevance generating interactive query refinement (QR) is a technique aimed at exploiting syntax variations of gradually extended, being removed or replaced with some other keywords query, which depending on the factors like e.g. the information resource, the database structure, or the keyword alignment, facilitates significantly the searching process. Therefore our motivation is to explore the dynamism of the precision trend depended upon the factors analyzed. For a couple of language pairs which constitute multilingual settings, we develop a user-centred framework that imposes distributed search optimization. Our data set contains variety of query types subm…

ChemInform Abstract: Topologically Complex Molecules Obtained by Transition Metal Templation: It Is the Presentation that Determines the Synthesis St…

2013

Topological constructions made from closed curves range from simple links to intricate knots and started to capture the chemists' attention in the early sixties. These mathematical objects result from particular embeddings of a single or a set of closed curves in the three-dimensional space that show an infinite variety of presentations. Simple catenanes, higher order interlocked macrocycles, and molecular knots can be synthesized via the metal template approach, just as simple macrocycles. However, this requires that rigid presentations with appropriate geometrical characteristics be identified prior to molecular design, and those selected for the metal-templated synthesis of some of these…

Estimation of Role of Sicilian Region on Production of Quality Wines. A Comparison between the Best Sicilian and Italian Wines by Using Influential W…

2016

Abstract Sicilian region (Southern Italy) has always been the larger Italian wine producer, because of their terroir (i.e. climate, soil and cultivar) and the extension of the vineyard area. For a long time, in the past, Sicilian vineyards produced only wine for blending or for bulk wine consumption. However, the quality of wine production in the Sicilian region has raised significantly over the past years, due to numerous factors, including, primarily, the development of manufacturing techniques, the major business investments of wineries, and the better legislation for protection of quality wines. These factors, combined with producers' targeted marketing strategies and actions, have grea…
