COMPARISON OF EXPERIMENTS WITH WEIGHTED DISTRIBUTIONS

In this paper the standard statistical experiment in which a random sample is drawn from some distribution involving an unknown parameter θ is compared with experiments in which samples are obtained from different weighted versions of that distribution, so that the underlying probability of entering the sample is multiplied by some weight function. This comparison is carried out by means of the concepts of sufficiency and pairwise sufficiency as developed in Blackwell's theory of the comparison of statistical experiments. Many examples are presented which illustrate the wide variety of effects that weight functions can have on the information about θ.

Effects of different yeast strains, nutrients and glutathione-rich inactivated yeast addition on the aroma characteristics of Catarratto wines

Catarratto is one of the most common non-aromatic white grape varieties cultivated in Sicily (Southern Italy). In order to improve the aromatic expression of Catarratto wines a trial was undertaken to investigate the effect of yeast strain, nutrition and reduced glutathione. Between school and working life: Vocational teachers’ agency in boundary-crossing settings

Abstract This paper investigates agency among vocational teachers with reference to boundary-crossing between school and working life. Our study utilised interviews with sixteen Finnish vocational teachers. Adopting a narrative analysis approach, we found that the teachers had a variety of forms of exercising agency in terms of decisions deliberately taken, and the discourse and actions following these decisions. Emotion rating from short blog texts

Being able to automatically perceive a variety of emotions from text alone has potentially important applications in CMC and HCI that range from identifying mood from online posts to enabling dynamically adaptive interfaces. However, such ability has not been proven in human raters or computational systems. Here we examine the ability of naive raters of emotion to detect one of eight emotional categories from 50 and 200 word samples of real blog text. Using expert raters as a 'gold standard', naive-expert rater agreement increased with longer texts, and was high for ratings of joy, disgust, anger and anticipation, but low for acceptance and 'neutral' texts.
