Dynamical selection rules in p annihilation at rest

1993

Abstract The branching ratios for p p annihilation at rest into two mesons show the existence of dynamical selection rules. The ratios for some annihilation modes are small even though much larger rates should be expected on the basis of statistical models. Dynamical selection rules are observed in annihilations in which strange mesons are produced, and in annihilations into two isovector mesons. The selection rules seem - to first order - not to depend on the spins or orbital angular momenta of the p p atom or of the two mesons produced. This observation suggests an underlying symmetry. It is argued that this symmetry is SU(3).

Chiral unitary approach to s-wave meson baryon scattering in the strangeness S=0 sector

2001

We study the S-wave interaction of mesons with baryons in the strangeness S=0 sector in a coupled channel unitary approach. The basic dynamics is drawn from the lowest order meson baryon chiral Lagrangians. Small modifications inspired by models with explicit vector meson exchange in the t-channel are also considered. In addition the pi pi N channel is included and shown to have an important repercussion in the results, particularly in the isospin 3/2 sector.

Quantum loops in radiative decays of the a1 and b1 axial-vector mesons

2007

A previous model where the low-lying axial-vector mesons are dynamically generated, implementing unitarity in coupled channels in the vector-pseudoscalar (V P) meson interaction, is applied to evaluate the decay widths of the a1(1260) and b1(1235) axial-vector mesons into . Unlike the case of the a1, the b1 radiative decay is systematically underestimated at tree level. In this work we evaluate for the first time the loop contribution coming from an initial V P vertex. Despite the large superficial divergence of the loops, the convergence of the relevant loops can be established by using arguments of gauge invariance. The partial decay widths obtained agree with the experimental values wit…

Gauge fields, hidden local symmetries, and meson exchange currents

1997

Abstract The model dependence of the electromagnetic isovector meson exchange current (MEC) operator at higher momentums transfer is studied. For this purpose, the MEC operator constructed from a Lagrangian of the πϱa 1 system obtained within the framework of the hidden local symmetries (HLS) approach is compared with the analogous operator derived earlier from a minimal Yang-Mills (YM) Lagrangian. Numerical results for the deuteron disintegration near threshold show that the model dependent part of the exchange current modifies the tail of the cross section sensibly and that the presence of the a 1 meson both in the MEC and in the nuclear interaction provides a consistent description of th…

Improved determination of the electroweak penguin contribution to ϵ′/ϵ in the chiral limit

2003

We perform a finite energy sum rule analysis of the flavor ud two-point V-A current correlator, Delta Pi (Q^2). The analysis, which is performed using both the ALEPH and OPAL databases for the V-A spectral function, Delta rho, allows us to extract the dimension six V-A OPE coefficient, a_6, which is related to the matrix element of the electroweak penguin operator, Q_8, by chiral symmetry. The result for a_6 leads directly to the improved (chiral limit) determination epsilon'/epsilon = (- 15.0 +- 2.7) 10^{-4}. Determination of higher dimension OPE contributions also allows us to perform an independent test using a low-scale constrained dispersive analysis, which provides a highly nontrivial…

νd→μ−Δ++nreaction and axial vectorN−Δcoupling

1999

The reaction $\ensuremath{\nu}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{d}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\Delta}}^{++}n$ is studied in the region of low ${q}^{2}$ to investigate the effect of deuteron structure and width of the $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ resonance on the differential cross section. The results are used to extract the axial vector $N\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\Delta}$ coupling ${C}_{5}^{A}$ from the experimental data on this reaction. The possibility to determine this coupling from electroweak interaction experiments with high intensity electron accelerators is discussed.

CP, T and CPT versus temporal asymmetries for entangled states of the B-system

1999

The observables used in the K-system to characterize T and CPT violation are no longer useful for the Bd-system, since the width difference between the physical states is vanishingly small. We show that only Im(epsilon) and Re(delta) can survive if Delta Gamma=0, and build alternative CP-odd, CPT-odd, T-odd and temporal asymmetries for the (B_CP -> B0, B0bar) transitions. These quantities enable us to test T and CPT invariances of the effective Hamiltonian for the B-system. The method needs the CP eigenstates B_CP, which can be tagged unambiguously to order lambda^3 from the entangled states of a B-factory.

Description of rotating N=Z nuclei in terms of isovector pairing

2004

A systematic investigation of the rotating $N=Z$ even-even nuclei in the mass $A=58-80$ region has been performed within the frameworks of the Cranked Relativistic Mean field, Cranked Relativistic Hartree Bogoliubov theories and cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky approach. Most of the experimental data is well accounted for in the calculations. The present study suggests that there is strong isovector $np$-pair field at low spin, the strength of which is defined by the isospin symmetry. At high spin, the isovector pair field is destroyed and the data are well described by the calculations assuming zero pairing. No clear evidence for the existence of the isoscalar $t=0$ $np$-pairing has been obtaine…

Correlated neutral B meson decays into CP eigenstates

2003

In the two correlated $B$ meson decay experiment we propose to measure intensities relating CP eigenstate ($J/\psi K_{S,L}$) decays on $both$ sides, which will be measurable in future upgrades of KEK and PEP. As a CP-forbidden transition, we obtain $I(J/\psi K_S, J/\psi K_S, \Delta t) \sim \sin ^2 (2\beta)$. We calculate in a model independent way all the possible intensities relating final CP and flavour eigenstate decays. Under CPT-invariance, the asymmetries for processes related by CP$\Delta t$ vanish for $\Delta \Gamma =0$ and measure $\Delta \Gamma$ linearly. We notice the impossibility to isolate the sign of $\cos (2\bet a)$ without an independent knowledge of the sign of $\Delta \Ga…

Atmospheric neutrino anomaly without maximal mixing?

2000

We consider a pattern of neutrino masses in which there is an approximate mass degeneracy between the two mass eigenstates most coupled to the $\nu_\mu$ and $\nu_\tau$ flavour eigenstates. Earth-matter effects can lift this degeneracy and induce an effectively maximal mixing between these two generations. This occurs if $\nu_e$'s contain comparable admixtures of the degenerate eigenstates, even rather small ones. This provides an explanation of the atmospheric neutrino anomaly in which the {\it ab initio} introduction of a large mixing angle is not required. To test this possibility we perform a novel and detailed analysis of the 52 kiloton-year SuperKamiokande data, and we find that in a l…
