Scattering off the color glass condensate

2015

In this thesis the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) framework, which describes quantum chromodynamics (QCD) at high energy, is applied to various scat- tering processes. Higher order corrections to the CGC evolution equations, known as the BK and JIMWLK equations, are also considered. It is shown that the leading order CGC calculations describe the experimen- tal data from electron-proton deep inelastic scattering (DIS), proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions. The initial condition for the BK evolution equation is obtained by performing a fit to deep inelastic scattering data. The fit result is used as an input to calculations of single particle spectra and nuclear suppression in proton-prot…

mRNA as a versatile tool for exogenous protein expression.

2012

Several viral and non-viral vectors have been developed for exogenous protein expression in specific cells. Conventionally, this purpose is achieved through the use of recombinant DNA. But mainly due to the risks associated with permanent genetic alteration of cells, safety and ethical concerns have been raised for the use of DNA-based vectors in human clinical therapy. In the last years, synthetic messenger RNA has emerged as powerful tool to deliver genetic information. RNA vectors exhibit several advantages compared to DNA and are particularly interesting for applications that require transient gene expression. RNA stability and translation efficiency can be increased by cis-acting struc…

Vertical transmission of naturally occurring Bunyamwera and insect-specific flavivirus infections in mosquitoes from islands and mainland shores of L…

2018

Background Many arboviruses transmitted by mosquitoes have been implicated as causative agents of both human and animal illnesses in East Africa. Although epidemics of arboviral emerging infectious diseases have risen in frequency in recent years, the extent to which mosquitoes maintain pathogens in circulation during inter-epidemic periods is still poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate whether arboviruses may be maintained by vertical transmission via immature life stages of different mosquito vector species. Methodology We collected immature mosquitoes (egg, larva, pupa) on the shores and islands of Lake Baringo and Lake Victoria in western Kenya and reared them to adults. Mo…

Analysis of inhomogeneously filled waveguides using a bi-orthonormal-basis method

2000

A general theoretical formulation to analyze inhomogeneously filled waveguides with lossy dielectrics is presented in this paper. The wave equations for the tranverse-field components are written in terms of a nonself-adjoint linear operator and its adjoint. The eigenvectors of this pair of linear operators define a biorthonormal-basis, allowing for a matrix representation of the wave equations in the basis of an auxiliary waveguide. Thus, the problem of solving a system of differential equations is transformed into a linear matrix eigenvalue problem. This formulation is applied to rectangular waveguides loaded with an arbitrary number of dielectric slabs centered at arbitrary points. The c…

L p-Spaces and the Radon–Nikodym Theorem

2020

In this chapter, we study the spaces of functions whose pth power is integrable. In Section 7.2, we first derive some of the important inequalities (Holder, Minkowski, Jensen) and then in Section 7.3 investigate the case p=2 in more detail.

Structure of eigenvectors of random regular digraphs

2018

Let $d$ and $n$ be integers satisfying $C\leq d\leq \exp(c\sqrt{\ln n})$ for some universal constants $c, C>0$, and let $z\in \mathbb{C}$. Denote by $M$ the adjacency matrix of a random $d$-regular directed graph on $n$ vertices. In this paper, we study the structure of the kernel of submatrices of $M-z\,{\rm Id}$, formed by removing a subset of rows. We show that with large probability the kernel consists of two non-intersecting types of vectors, which we call very steep and gradual with many levels. As a corollary, we show, in particular, that every eigenvector of $M$, except for constant multiples of $(1,1,\dots,1)$, possesses a weak delocalization property: its level sets have cardin…

Resolvent Estimates Near the Boundary of the Range of the Symbol

2019

The purpose of this chapter is to give quite explicit bounds on the resolvent near the boundary of Σ(p) (or more generally, near certain “generic boundary-like” points.) The result is due (up to a small generalization) to Montrieux (Estimation de resolvante et construction de quasimode pres du bord du pseudospectre, 2013) and improves earlier results by Martinet (Sur les proprietes spectrales d’operateurs nonautoadjoints provenant de la mecanique des fluides, 2009) about upper and lower bounds for the norm of the resolvent of the complex Airy operator, which has empty spectrum (Almog, SIAM J Math Anal 40:824–850, 2008). There are more results about upper bounds, and some of them will be rec…

The Rank of Trifocal Grassmann Tensors

2019

Grassmann tensors arise from classical problems of scene reconstruction in computer vision. Trifocal Grassmann tensors, related to three projections from a projective space of dimension k onto view-spaces of varying dimensions are studied in this work. A canonical form for the combined projection matrices is obtained. When the centers of projections satisfy a natural generality assumption, such canonical form gives a closed formula for the rank of the trifocal Grassmann tensors. The same approach is also applied to the case of two projections, confirming a previous result obtained with different methods in [6]. The rank of sequences of tensors converging to tensors associated with degenerat…

Multidimensional Model Design using Data Mining: A Rapid Prototyping Methodology

2017

[Departement_IRSTEA]Ecotechnologies [TR1_IRSTEA]MOTIVE; International audience; Designing and building a Data Warehouse (DW), and associated OLAP cubes, are long processes, during which decision-maker requirements play an important role. But decision-makers are not OLAP experts and can find it difficult to deal with the concepts behind DW and OLAP. To support DW design in this context, we propose: (i) a new rapid prototyping methodology, integrating two different DM algorithms, to define dimension hierarchies according to decision-maker knowledge; (ii) a complete UML Profile, to define a DW schema that integrates both the DM algorithms; (iii) a mapping process to transform multidimensional …

Study of periodic Dielectric Frequency-Selective Surfaces under 3D plane wave incidence

2016

A periodic Dielectric Frequency-Selective Surface (DFSS) is studied under 3D plane-wave incidence, whose unit cell in the periodic direction is composed of a dielectric grating and a homogeneous dielectric layer. The structure is excited by a linearly polarized plane-wave. The procedure for computing the Brillouin diagram of the structure under 2D plane-wave incidence with TE or TM polarization was already described by the authors, and the extension to the 3D incidence case has been performed in a similar way. Following the same formalism, it has been obtained the Generalized Scattering Matrix (GSM) of one period of the infinite periodic lattice. This requires the knowledge of the modal spe…
