Video Indexing Using MPEG Motion Compensation Vectors

2003

In the last years a lot of work has been done on color, textural, structural and semantic indexing of "content-based" video databases. Motion-based video indexing has been less explored, with approaches generally based on the analysis of optical flows. Compressed videos require the decompression of the sequences and the computation of optical flows, two steps computationally heavy. In this paper we propose some methods to index videos by motion features (mainly related to camera motion) and by motion-based spatial segmentation of frames, in a fully automatic way. Our idea is to use MPEG motion vectors as an alternative to optical flows. Their extraction is very simple and fast; it doesn't r…

A machine learning approach for user localization exploiting connectivity data

2016

The growing popularity of Location-Based Services (LBSs) has boosted research on cheaper and more pervasive localization systems, typically relying on such monitoring equipment as Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), which allow to re-use the same instrumentation both for monitoring and for localization without requiring lengthy off-line training. This work addresses the localization problem, exploiting knowledge acquired in sample environments, and extensible to areas not considered in advance. Localization is turned into a learning problem, solved by a statistical algorithm. Additionally, parameter tuning is fully automated thanks to its formulation as an optimization problem based only on co…

Plantxel: Towards a plant-based controllable display

2018

The use of plants as a mean for both visualization and interaction has been already explored in smart environments. In this work, we explore the possibility of constructing a controllable dynamic plant-based display using thigmonastic plants, i.e. plants that change the shape and position of their leaves as a response to external stimuli. As an initial step towards this vision, we first introduce our approach of building a plant-based pixel (plant-pixel, or plantxel), and the principles of composing a plantxel-based public display. We then present the results of a feasibility study conducted with Mimosa spegazzinii plants, showing that our approach can achieve an acceptable contrast ratio, …

Real-time content-aware image resizing using reduced linear model

2010

In this paper an effective and efficient method for contentaware image resizing is proposed. It is based on the solution of a linear system where each pixel displacement (compression or expansion) is determined in dependence of the visual relevance of the pixel itself. The linear nature of the model allows real-time application of the method even for large images. This fully automatic approach can be also improved by interactively providing cues such as geometric constraints and/or manual relevant object labeling. The results have proven that the presented method achieves results comparable or superior to existent strategies, while improving efficiency.

The electron and Occam's razor

2017

This paper introduces a Zitterbewegung (ZBW) model of the electron by applying the principle of Occam’s razor to Maxwell’s equations and by introducing a scalar component in the electromagnetic field. The aim is to explain, by using simple and intuitive concepts, the origin of the electric charge and the electromagnetic nature of mass and inertia. A ZBW model of the electron is also proposed as the best suited theoretical framework to study the structure of Ultra-Dense Deuterium (UDD), the origin of anomalous heat in metal–hydrogen systems and the possibility of existence of “super-chemical” aggregates at Compton scale.

Maxwell’s Equations and Occam’s Razor

2017

In this paper a straightforward application of Occam’s razor principle to Maxwell’s equation shows that only one entity, the electro-magnetic four-potential, is at the origin of a plurality of concepts and entities in physics. The application of the so called “Lorenz gauge” in Maxwell’s equations denies the status of real physical entity to a scalar field that has a gradient in space-time with clear physical meaning: the four-current density field. The mathematical formalism of space-time Clifford algebra is introduced and then used to encode Maxwell’s equations starting only from the electromagnetic four-potential. This approach suggests a particular Zitterbewegung (ZBW) model for charged …

An Embedded, FPGA-based Computer Graphics Coprocessor with Native Geometric Algebra Support

2009

The representation of geometric objects and their transformation are the two key aspects in computer graphics applications. Traditionally, computer-intensive matrix calculations are involved in modeling and rendering three-dimensional (3D) scenery. Geometric algebra (aka Clifford algebra) is attracting attention as a natural way to model geometric facts and as a powerful analytical tool for symbolic calculations. In this paper, the architecture of Clifford coprocessor (CliffoSor) is introduced. CliffoSor is an embedded parallel coprocessing core that offers direct hardware support to Clifford algebra operators. A prototype implementation on a programmable gate array (FPGA) board is detailed…

Embedded Coprocessors for Native Execution of Geometric Algebra Operations

2016

Clifford algebra or geometric algebra (GA) is a simple and intuitive way to model geometric objects and their transformations. Operating in high-dimensional vector spaces with significant computational costs, the practical use of GA requires dedicated software and/or hardware architectures to directly support Clifford data types and operators. In this paper, a family of embedded coprocessors for the native execution of GA operations is presented. The paper shows the evolution of the coprocessor family focusing on the latest two architectures that offer direct hardware support to up to five-dimensional Clifford operations. The proposed coprocessors exploit hardware-oriented representations o…

Text localization from photos

2009

In this paper a new text extraction algorithm is proposed. In real scenes the text is usually overlapped or is part of the background. To identify the text regions, in complex conditions, a method exploiting a “multi-resolution feature based method” for extracting text with undefined dimension has been developed. Once identified, the multi-resolution information are merged and skimmed through a set of Support Vector Machines (SVM). The tests and the comparisons with other techniques, performed on heterogeneous images, have shown the effectiveness of the proposed.

MR2684111 Kadelburg, Zoran; Radenović, Stojan; Rakočević, Vladimir Topological vector space-valued cone metric spaces and fixed point theorems. Fixed…

2011

Recently, Huang and Zhang [\emph{Cone metric spaces and fixed point theorems of contractive mappings}, J. Math. Anal. Appl., \textbf{332} (2007), 1468 -1476] defined cone metric spaces by substituing an order normed space for the real numbers and proved some fixed point theorems. Let $E$ be a real Hausdorff topological vector space and $P$ a cone in $E$ with int\,$P\neq \emptyset$, where int\,$P$ denotes the interior of $P$. Let $X$ be a nonempty set. A function $d : X \times X\to E$ is called a \emph{tvs}-cone metric and $(X, d)$ is called a \emph{tvs}-cone metric space, if the following conditions hold: (1) $\theta \leq d(x, y)$ for all $x, y \in X$ and $d(x, y)= \theta$ if and only if $x…
