THE ROLE OF UNBOUNDED TIME-SCALES IN GENERATING LONG-RANGE MEMORY IN ADDITIVE MARKOVIAN PROCESSES
2013
Any additive stationary and continuous Markovian process described by a Fokker–Planck equation can also be described in terms of a Schrödinger equation with an appropriate quantum potential. By using such analogy, it has been proved that a power-law correlated stationary Markovian process can stem from a quantum potential that (i) shows an x-2 decay for large x values and (ii) whose eigenvalue spectrum admits a null eigenvalue and a continuum part of positive eigenvalues attached to it. In this paper we show that such two features are both necessary. Specifically, we show that a potential with tails decaying like x-μ with μ < 2 gives rise to a stationary Markovian process which is not p…
Digital generation of multivariate wind field processes
2001
Abstract A very efficient procedure for the generation of multivariate wind velocity stochastic processes by wave superposition as well as autoregressive time series is proposed in this paper. The procedure starts by decomposing the wind velocity field into a summation of fully coherent independent vector processes using the frequency dependent eigenvectors of the Power Spectral Density matrix. It is shown that the application of the method allows to show some very interesting physical properties that allow to reduce drastically the computational effort. Moreover, using a standard finite element procedure for approximating the frequency dependent eigenvectors, the generation procedure requi…
Molecular Co-operation between Protein PAM and Streptokinase for Plasmin Acquisition by Streptococcus pyogenes
1998
Bacterial surface-associated plasmin formation is believed to contribute to invasion, although the underlying molecular mechanisms are poorly understood. To define the components necessary for plasmin generation on group A streptococci we used strain AP53 which exposes an M-like protein ("PAM") that contains a plasminogen-binding sequence with two 13-amino acid residues long tandem repeats (a1 and a2). Utilizing an Escherichia coli-streptococcal shuttle vector, we replaced a 29-residue long sequence segment of Arp4, an M-like protein that does not bind plasminogen, with a single (a1) or the combined a1a2 repeats of PAM. When expressed in E. coli, the purified chimeric Arp/PAM proteins both …
Influence of data input in the evaluation of Stress Intensity Factors from Thermoelastic Stress Analysis
2021
Abstract Thermoelastic Stress Analysis (TSA) is applied to evaluate the Stress Intensity Factor (SIF), T-stress and J-Integral in a Single-Edge-Notched-Tension sample undergoing fatigue cycling. The Williams’ series stress formulation and a least-square fitting (LSF) procedure are used to obtain the SIF and the T-stress. The evaluation is carried out with the aim to investigate the influence of the input data in the system of equations solved with the LSF, and in particular: the number of coefficients used in the Williams’ series and the choice and position of the fitted experimental data points. Three algorithms for the determination of the crack tip position are also evaluated: a coarse g…
Constrained and unconstrained problems in location theory and inner products
1997
In a real normed space X the optimization problem associated to a finite subset and to a family of positive weights with the objective function [UM0001] has some well known properties when X is an ...
The impact of economic and policy uncertainty shocks in Spain
2020
The purpose of this research is to quantify the impact of economic uncertainty shocks in Spain by using a structural vector autoregression (SVAR) approach with data from the first quarter of 2001 u...
Researches Regarding the Use of Fuzzy Controllers within CNC Feed Drives
2015
This paper presents some simulation based upon a dynamic model of a feed-drive within the structure of a CNC machine tool. A DC servomotor was considered as actuation device for the feed drive. For a given set of parameters for the position controller, two fuzzy types of fuzzy controllers were tested by means of simulation. The first fuzzy controller was a proportional one, with one input and one output, while the second one was a two variables one, with two inputs and one outputp.
Semi-supervised Hyperspectral Image Classification with Graphs
2006
This paper presents a semi-supervised graph-based method for the classification of hyperspectral images. The method is designed to exploit the spatial/contextual information in the im- ages through composite kernels. The proposed method produces smoother classifications with respect to the intrinsic structure collectively revealed by known labeled and unlabeled points. Good accuracy in high dimensional spaces and low number of labeled samples (ill-posed situations) are produced as compared to standard inductive support vector machines.
Including invariances in SVM remote sensing image classification
2012
This paper introduces a simple method to include invariances in support vector machine (SVM) for remote sensing image classification. We rely on the concept of virtual support vectors, by which the SVM is trained with both the selected support vectors and synthetic examples encoding the invariance of interest. The algorithm is very simple and effective, as demonstrated in two particularly interesting examples: invariance to the presence of shadows and to rotations in patchbased image segmentation. The improved accuracy (around +6% both in OA and Cohen's κ statistic), along with the simplicity of the approach encourage its use and extension to encode other invariances and other remote sensin…
Existence, nonexistence and uniqueness of positive solutions for nonlinear eigenvalue problems
2017
We study the existence of positive solutions for perturbations of the classical eigenvalue problem for the Dirichlet $p-$Laplacian. We consider three cases. In the first the perturbation is $(p-1)-$sublinear near $+\infty$, while in the second the perturbation is $(p-1)-$superlinear near $+\infty$ and in the third we do not require asymptotic condition at $+\infty$. Using variational methods together with truncation and comparison techniques, we show that for $\lambda\in (0, \widehat{\lambda}_1)$ -$\lambda>0$ is the parameter and $\widehat{\lambda}_1$ being the principal eigenvalue of $\left(-\Delta_p, W^{1, p}_0(\Omega)\right)$ -we have positive solutions, while for $\lambda\geq \widehat{\…
