Automating the Parameter Selection in VRP: An Off-line Parameter Tuning Tool Comparison

Vehicle route optimization is an important application of combinatorial optimization. Therefore, a variety of methods has been proposed to solve different challenging vehicle routing problems. An important step in adopting these methods to solve real-life problems is to find appropriate parameters for the routing algorithms. In this chapter, we show how this task can be automated using parameter tuning by presenting a set of comparative experiments on seven state-of-the-art tuning methods. A Scatter Search Algorithm for the Split Delivery Vehicle Routing Problem

In this chapter we present a metaheuristic procedure constructed for the special case of the Vehicle Routing Problem in which the demands of clients can be split, i.e., any client can be serviced by more than one vehicle. The proposed algorithm, based on the scatter search methodology, produces a feasible solution using the minimum number of vehicles. The quality of the obtained results is comparable to the best results known up to date on a set of instances previously published in the literature.

Efficient Local Search Limitation Strategies for Vehicle Routing Problems

2008

In this paper we examine five different strategies for limiting the local search neighborhoods in the context of vehicle routing problems. The vehicle routing problem deals with the assignment of a set of transportation orders to a fleet of vehicles, and the sequencing of stops for each vehicle to minimize transportation costs. The examined strategies are applied to three standard neighborhoods and implemented in a recently suggested powerful memetic algorithm. Experimental results on 26 well-known benchmark problems indicate significant speedups of almost 80% without worsening the solution quality. On the contrary, in 12 cases new best solutions were obtained.

The research of optimization techniques in the system of goods distribution from warehouses to final users (vehicle routing problem), made considerable savings on the total cost of transport and, consequently, on the final cost of goods, and produced the models applicable to other operating environments (e.g., transport for disabled people, school, municipal waste collection). The analysis conducted on the different models developed under the VRP highlights the support that these models can give on the infomobility of goods.

A branch-and-cut algorithm for the soft-clustered vehicle-routing problem

Abstract The soft-clustered vehicle-routing problem is a variant of the classical capacitated vehicle-routing problem (CVRP) in which customers are partitioned into clusters and all customers of the same cluster must be served by the same vehicle. We introduce a novel symmetric formulation of the problem in which the clustering part is modeled with an asymmetric sub-model. We solve the new model with a branch-and-cut algorithm exploiting some known valid inequalities for the CVRP that can be adapted. This article studies the vehicle routing problem with trailers and transshipments VRPTT, a practically relevant, but challenging, generalization of the classical vehicle routing problem. Investigation of Simulated Trading — A multi agent based trading system for optimization purposes

Abstract Some years ago, Bachem, Hochstattler, and Malich proposed a heuristic algorithm called Simulated Trading for the optimization of vehicle routing problems. Computational agents place buy-orders and sell-orders for customers to be handled at a virtual financial market, the prices of the orders depending on the costs of inserting the customer in the tour or for his removal. According to a proposed rule set, the financial market creates a buy-and-sell graph for the various orders in the order book, intending to optimize the overall system. Here I present a thorough investigation for the application of this algorithm to the traveling salesman problem.

ARC A computerized system for urban garbage collection

In this paper we present ARC a computerized system developed for urban garbage collection. The package is intended to help the planners in the design of efficient collection routes and to facilitate the study and evaluation of alternatives concerning issues such as the type and number of vehicles, frequency of collection and type and location of refuse containers. The final product is a “user friendly” system designed to be used by the planners without outside assistance.
