Response-To-Intervention in Finland and the United States: Mathematics Learning Support as an Example
2018
Response to Intervention (RTI) was accepted in the early 2000s as a new framework for identifying learning difficulties (LD) in the U.S. In Finland, a similar multi-tiered framework has existed since 2010. In the present study, these frameworks are presented from the viewpoint of the role of assessment and instruction as expressed in documents that describe the frameworks, as it seems that these two components of RTI are the most disparate between the U.S. and Finland. We present a suggestion for the Finnish framework as an example of support in mathematics learning that incorporates principles of RTI (such as systematized assessment and instruction, cyclic support, and modifiable instructi…
Developing a metatheoretical framework for second language development : a cultural-historical theory and dynamic systems theory perspective
2017
The main aim of this article-based dissertation is to construct and articulate a dialectical metatheoretical architecture for the study of second language development termed Purposive-Historical Systems Theory (PHiST) invoking, inter alia, the axiomatic imperatives of dynamic systems theory (DST), Vygotskian cultural-historical theory (CHT), and Pepperian root metaphor theory (RMT). Specifically, it primarily purports, first, to demonstrate the tenability of a dialectical synthesis of DST and CHT; second, to philosophize on the fundamental contours of PHiST; third, to apply a novel metatheoretical perspective, as a quintessential example, to reconceptualizing the seminal construct of the Zo…
Minä lienen tullut joskus Suomessa vielä? : venäjänkielisten suomi toisena ja suomi vieraana kielenä -oppijoiden perfektin ja imperfektin omaksumisen…
2011
Tutkin pro-gradu -työssäni venäjänkielisten oppilaiden perfektin ja imperfektin käytön omaksumista kahdessa oppimisympäristössä. Selvitän perfektin ja imperfektin esiintyvyyttä eritasoisten suomi toisena ja suomi vieraana kielenä -oppilaiden kirjallisissa tuotoksissa, kartoitan, minkä tyyppistä perfektiä ja imperfektiä kirjoituksissa käytetään suomi toisena kielenä -opetuksessa usein sovellettavan jaottelun mukaisesti. Virheanalyysin avulla selvitän, minkä tyyppisiä perfekti- ja imperfektivirheitä kirjoituksissa esiintyy ja onko äidinkielellä vaikutusta virheiden laatuun. Aineistona tutkimuksessa on Kansainvälinen oppijansuomen korpus (ICLFI), joka sisältää venäläisissä yliopistoissa suomea…
The Development of Russian Heritage Pupils' Writing Proficiency in Finnish and Russian
2018
James Cummins has stated that “a cognitively and academically beneficial form of bilingualism can be achieved only on the basis of adequately developed first language (L1) skills” (1979, p. 222). In this chapter we focus on bilingual writing development and its connections to learners’ cognitive and linguistic skills in L1 and L2 and background factors. Our participants come from Russian-speaking immigrant families living in Finland. All participants go to Finnish schools and are either integrated into mainstream classes or have started a preparatory class specially designed for recently arrived immigrant children. The basic aim of this chapter is two-fold and thus, the study is introduced …

Âzykovaâ identičnost' russkoâzyčnyh gimnazistov v Finlândii : na osnove polustrukturirovannogo interv'û
2012
Olisi hyödyllistä tietää erityisesti venäjänkielisten nuorten kieli-identiteeteistä, jotta voidaan tarkastella, miten hyvin he ovat kotoutuneet, miten he ylläpitävät äidinkieltänsä ja kenenä he itseänsä pitävät. Me…

The CANNA-TICS Study Protocol: A Randomized Multi-Center Double-Blind Placebo Controlled Trial to Demonstrate the Efficacy and Safety of Nabiximols i…
2020
Background: Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (TS) is a chronic neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by motor and vocal tics. First-line treatments for tics are antipsychotics and tic-specific behavioral therapies. However, due to a lack of trained therapists and adverse events of antipsychotic medication many patients seek alternative treatment options including cannabis. Based on the favorable results obtained from case studies on different cannabis-based medicines as well as two small randomized controlled trials using delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), we hypothesize that the cannabis extract nabiximols can be regarded as a promising new and safe treatment strategy in TS.Objective: To …
Can globalization be socially inclusive through tourism 2.0?
2015
International audience; Can globalization be socially inclusive through new 2.0 digital initiatives? This is the thought-provoking question we ask in this article, with a special focus on the Republic of Moldova. Part 1 begins with a reflection on the intersection between globalization, development studies and the current Moldovan context. Part 2 is devoted to the promising field of emergent tourism, and more particularly, tourism 2.0, a blossoming concept that we try to uncover. Part 3 presents a concrete application with the example of Moldova Tours 2.0, a new digital initiative in the field of e-tourism. Finally, we conclude.
A New Spatial Shift‐Share Decomposition: An Application to Tourism Competitiveness in Italian Regions
2020
The paper proposes a new version of spatial shift-share decomposition to improve on the various approaches to conventional shift-share analysis found in the literature. The novelty of our proposal is that it enables researchers to assess spatial competitiveness effects controlling for the influence of industrial specialization at both regional and neighborhood level. This new version is applied to inbound tourism in Italian regions and enables us to identify the best and worst performers. Our empirical results identify favorable scenarios in some areas of the country, such as Sardinia as well as regional advantage in a sizeable number of well-known destinations.
