During the Roman Empire period, the ruler was venerated in many ways. Prostration, proskynesis, referring to the emperor as dominus; adora-tio purpurae; manus velatae; observing the ritual silence; and other rituals were supposed to strengthen the emperor’s authority. During the period of Dominate, the Roman freedom was replaced by etiquette at the imperial court. This article discusses only two examples of veneration of the ruler in the Roman Empire period, namely manus velatae and silentiarii. The manus velatae ritual consisted of giving hands covered with a cloth to the ruler and receiving objects from him in such hands. The gesture had already been encountered in many ancient cultures, …

Abstract Brexit seems to have produced a new form of narrative in the Conservative Party in which some Conservative MPs brand themselves first and foremost as representatives of ‘the people’. Following on from the 2016 EU referendum, a new discourse has become prominent in the party and has also been developed as a new critique of the British Parliament. An analysis of Hansard debates between July 2016 and December 2019 helps identify different forms of anti-Parliament narrative which denounce the paralysis of the legislative process as well as its anti-democratic and conspiratorial features. The main theme of this intervention is the role played by Syrian and PalestinianChristians in collecting and preserving the Greek philosophical thought and in guaranteeing its trasmission by being the warrantors of Greek and Patristic culture in the following centuries. Ojcowie Reformacji: Marcin Luter i Jan Kalwin zakwestionowali kult obrazu. Posługiwali się różnymi argumentami. Marcin Luter dopuszczał obecność obrazów w przestrzeni kościelnej, a Jan Kalwin – nie. Ich teologia mocno oddziałała na Europę, tak że nawet katolicyzm w swej potocznej wrażliwości odszedł od rozumienia obrazu kultycznego, a wszedł w czas sztuki. Obraz przestał być pojmowany jako szczególne miejsce obecności (ikona), a zaczął funkcjonować jako dzieło sztuki, przestał być medium odnoszącym do oryginału, ale sam stał się oryginałem w sensie artystycznym.

Wizerunek św. Floriana w porównaniu z wizerunkami innych świętych, obok św. Jerzego, jest jednym z najczęściej wykorzystywanych wizerunków w herbach polskich. Nasuwa się pytanie: Dlaczego tak się dzieje? Odpowiedź jest bardzo prosta. Otóż św. Florian to wzór człowieka nieugiętego w swoich przekonaniach, wzór wierności wyznawanej wiary, wzór męstwa, odwagi, ofiarności, który narażał się dla bliźnich, przyjaciół, chciał pomóc, chciał ulżyć w cierpieniu. Św. Florian, patron m.in. ludzi, którzy w trosce o życie, zdrowie i mienie bliźniego oraz środowisko walczą z pożarami i miejscowymi zagrożeniami, jest wciąż pamiętany i czczony w wielu zakątkach naszego kraju i poza nim, a pamięć ta jest okaz…
