Tomographic left ventricular volume determination in the presence of aneurysm by three-dimensional echocardiographic imaging. I: Asymmetric model hea…

1996

To improve the accuracy of measurements of left ventricular volume in the presence of an aneurysm, we used three-dimensional echocardiographic imaging to analyze the shape of left ventricles in 23 asymmetric model hearts with eccentric aneurysms of different sizes, shapes, and localizations. A standard 3.75 MHz ultrasound probe with a rotation motor device was used to obtain a three-dimensional data set. By rotating the probe stepwise 1 degree, 180 radial ultrasound pictures were digitized. On the basis of the three-dimensional data set, the following parameters were determined and compared with the dimensions of the model hearts obtained by direct measurement: total left ventricular volume…

Effekt der kontralateralen Stimulation auf evozierte otoakustische Emissionen bei akutem Hörverlust*

1994

23 patients with unilateral hearing loss and presence of TEOAE on both ears were examined with regard to the association between contralateral acoustic stimulation and evoked otoacoustic emissions. Contralateral white noise of 40 dB HL, 50 dB HL and 60 dB HL decreases the amplitude of TEOAE both at the ear with and without hearing loss. In comparison with a group of subjects with normal hearing, the decrease in the amplitude of TEOAE was less in the group of patients with hearing loss. Two paradoxical cases were found with an increase in the TEOAE amplitude in the ear with hearing loss during contralateral stimulation. It is assumed that impairment of the efferent synapses on the outer hair…

Right ventricular volume determination in isolated human hearts

1986

For right ventricular volume determination a new method was developed that took into account right ventricular imaging by apical two-dimensional echocardiography in the four- and two-chamber views. Right ventricular volume was calculated by subtraction of the partial volume of the left ventricle and interventricular septum from the total heart volume of the right and left ventricles including the interventricular septum. Accuracy of the subtraction method was evaluated in isolated human hearts by two-dimensional echocardiography and radiography. Regression analysis indicated that for both the echocardiographic and radiologic procedures, the subtraction method gave the best correlation with …

Early Markers of Cardiovascular Damage

1998

Cardiovascular (CV) disease represents at present one of the most frequent causes of morbidity and mortality in western industrialized countries. The prevalence of CV disease is increased in subjects with hypertension (HTN), diabetes mellitus (DM), dyslipidemia and central obesity. In these conditions, it is possible to detect early alterations of metabolic, hormonal, hemostatic, genetic and hemodynamic parameters, frequently associated with morphological and functional modifications of the left ventricle (LV) and the vascular system. Since these changes generally precede and are closely related to the occurrence of CV events, they may be considered early markers of CV disease. In recent ye…

Bifocal Stimulation in Patient with Congenitally Corrected Transposition of Great Vessels

2011

Congenitally corrected transposition of the great vessels (CCTGV) is a rare congenital heart defect associated with multiple cardiac morphological abnormalities and conduction defects. Complete atrioventricular (AV) block occurs in 30% of patients and it may be present at birth or develop later with a rate of 2% per year; moreover, a systemic right ventricle is frequently characterized by heart failure in adult life. We used a bifocal cardiac stimulation for a young woman affected by CCTGV and atrioventricular Mobitz 2 and 2:1 block, considering structural, anatomic condition, and the high rate of pacing she underwent. The Prognostic Role of Hypertrabeculation By Cardiac Magnetic Resonance in Thalassemia Intermedia Patients

2016

Abstract Background. Differentiation of left ventricle non-compaction (LVNC) from hypertrabeculated LV due to a negative heart remodeling in thalassemia intermedia (TI) can depends on the selected CMR criterion. The recently proposed Piga's criterion (NC/C ratio threshold of >2.5, Am J Haem 2012) seems to have a low specificity to identify the true LVNC in TI. Anyway, the Piga's criterion could well detect easy a negative heart remodeling in TI patients. Purpose: To assess prospectively whether the Piga's criterion has a prognostic role for adverse cardiovascular outcomes in TI patients. Methods. We studied prospectively by CMR 168 TI patients (81 males, mean age 38.32 ±11.61 years) cons…

Echocardiography in myocardial infarction

1986

This paper discusses the usefulness of echocardiography in thrombolysis, its diagnostic value and drawbacks for therapy and the possibilities for follow-up studies. The diagnostic value is seen in the possibility of localizing and defining the extent of myocardial infarction, not only of the left but also of the right ventricle, and recognizing the complications of myocardial infarction as soon as possible 1, 2, 4.

Effect of Scar Development on Fast Electrophysiological Models of the Human Heart: In-Silico Study on Atlas-Based Virtual Populations

2011

The main goal of this work is to study the effect of scar development in the electrophysiological function of the human left ventricle by statistically analyzing large-scale simulation data including hypertrophic and dilated hearts. Electrophysiological simulations are obtained by solving the classical Eikonal equation in both the ventricular tissue and a customized Purkinje system. This Purkinje system is obtained assuming a geodesic rule to connect different Purkinje-myocardial junctions into a tree-like structure. Infarction shape and function is modeled with taking into account the occlusion in coronary arteries. Infarct, core and border zones of the scar are estimated by calculating bl…
